Part 2
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Opening scene is a continuation of the Season 3 final scene. The sound of tires screeching to a stop is heard, then the back of Kate's car can be seen. Jack stares blankly at her car. Kate puts the car in reverse and squeals the tires as she rushes back to where Jack is standing. After making a hasty stop, she opens the car door and steps out, leaving the door open and the motor running, then begins walking towards Jack.]
KATE: (angrily) We have to go back? We have to go back?!
[Kate comes to a stop when they are standing face to face.]
JACK: (mumbling) Now hold on...
[Kate begins to yell in anger at Jack now.]
KATE: Who do you think you are?! You call me over and over again for two days straight, stoned on your pills! And then you show up here with an obituary for Jeremy Bentham.
[Kate takes pause, sighs, then continues in a lower tone of voice.]
KATE: When he came to me and I heard what he had to say, I knew he was crazy. But you... you believed him.
JACK: (nodding) Yes.
KATE: Him, of all people.
JACK: Yes, Kate, I did, because he said that that was the only way that I could keep you safe... you and Aaron.
[Kate, with the shine of tears on her face, slaps Jack.]
KATE: Don't you say his name. (pause) I still have to explain to him why you are not there to read to him, so don't you say his name!
JACK: (whispers) I'm sorry.
[After a pause of uncomfortable silence, Kate continues.]
KATE: I've spent the last three years trying to forget all the horrible things that happened on the day that we left. (pause) How dare you ask me to go back?
[Kate stares at Jack for a moment, who has no response. She then turns and walks back to her car. After sitting in the driver's seat, she closes the door, puts the car into gear and drives off into the night. The glare of her taillights can be seen leaving into the darkness. Jack continues standing in silence.]
[ISLAND]
[Scene opens with Jack tromping through the jungle. He is breathing heavily and a brief glimpse of the blood on his shirt from his wound is shown. Jack comes to a momentary stop and Sawyer's voice is heard from behind him.]
SAWYER: You sure we're going the right way?
JACK: Lapidus said they were headed northeast.
[Jack continues onward and Sawyer is seen following him, rifle in hand.]
SAWYER: You might wanna slow down a little, 'cause you look like you're about to keel over, Doc.
JACK: I'm fine.
SAWYER: (sarcastically) Of course you're fine. You're always fine.
[Jack spots something and comes to a stop. He holds a hand up to Sawer, then they both crouch and look through the jungle at the exterior of the greenhouse. They both begin speaking in quiet voices.]
SAWYER: Is this it?
JACK: I don't know.
SAWYER: So what's the plan, Sundance?
[Jack looks down, obviously worn out from his wound and all the hiking through the jungle.]
JACK: The plan is we wait t-
[He stops when a zipper being pulled is heard, which causes them both to turn in surprise and aim their guns towards the sound. Through the foliage they see Hurley's back turned towards them while he is relieving himself. Jack hangs back as Sawyer calls out Hurley's name and begins heading in his direction.]
SAWYER: Hugo?!
[Hurley looks over his shoulder and calls back.]
HURLEY: Sawyer!
[As Sawyer approaches, Hurley zips up his pants and turns to face him.]
SAWYER: You alright?
HURLEY: Dude, you came back. How'd you know where I was?
[Sawyer turns and looks behind him. Hurley follows his gaze and sees Jack leaning against a bamboo cane for support. At first glance, Hurley looks uncomfortably at him, as they had not parted on good terms.]
JACK: It's good to see you, Hurley.
HURLEY: Yeah...
[Hurley lightens up a bit and shows a slight smile.]
HURLEY: Yeah, man. You too.
[Sawyer looks back to Hurley.]
SAWYER: So where the hell is he?
[Scene shifts as the three approach the greenhouse. The camera view raises to show the inner area of the greenhouse. Locke is inside looking around. Upon reaching the entrance, Jack calls out to him.]
JACK: Locke.
[Locke turns and their eyes meet. After a pause, he responds.]
LOCKE: Hello, Jack.
[Scene ends as Jack just stands there, looking at Locke.]
[FREIGHTER]
[The initial view is away from the freighter at a high angle for a short moment. The glare of the sun covers the open ocean. Scene then shifts inside the room where the C-4 explosives are rigged. Desmond can be seen walking around the C-4, studying it.]
DESMOND: There's enough C-4 here to blow up a bloody aircraft carrier.
[On the other side of the explosives, Michael and Jin look up at him. Desmond continues speaking as he circles the the stack of C-4, continuing to study the wiring.]
DESMOND: When I was in the army... I did... six months explosive ordnance disposal. Which, as the saying goes, is... just enough time to learn how to blow yourself up.
MICHAEL: Is it on a timer? And why hasn't it gone off yet?
[As Desmond talks, he indicates various parts of the equipment and wiring of the bomb.]
DESMOND: This is a... a radio receiver. It's... it's like a walkie-talkie. You send it a signal, and, uh... it... it triggers a bomb remotely.
[Michael looks around the room uncomfortably.]
JIN: So... can we... turn off?
[Desmond exhales deeply.]
DESMOND: This is a... this is a trip wire. Move it, and... boom. This is dummy wiring. If you cut the wrong one... boom. This is multiple firing systems. You can disable one but the next one... boom. Uh, this... battery's the power source. If you disconnect it...
JIN: Boom.
[Desmond looks gravely to Jin, who looks back at him with the same expression. Scene closes with a closeup of the explosives.]

[ISLAND]
[At the greenhouse.]
[Jack, Hurley and Sawyer stand at the entrance. Locke walks closer for conversation.]
JACK: What are you doing in here?
LOCKE: There's a... a DHARMA station below us, and, um, I'm looking for a way to get in.
JACK: To get in and do what?
LOCKE: Hugo, James, would you mind if I spoke to Jack alone?
[As Hurley and Sawyer turn to leave, Jack moves to follow them.]
JACK: (to Locke) Don't bother. We just came back for Hurley. (to Hurley and Sawyer) Lets go.
[Sawyer continues as if to leave but Hurley stops.]
LOCKE: Jack, you need to hear what I have to say-
[Jack turns back to Locke.]
JACK: What I need to do is to walk back to the chopper, get on it, and get the rest of our people off this island.
[When he turns to leave though, he finds Hurley facing him.]
HURLEY: Uh, dude, probably not the best idea right now. Those Rambo guys are taking Ben to that helicopter. He surrendered himself to 'em about an hour ago.
[Jack looks accusingly back at Locke.]
JACK: Now why the hell would he do that?
[In the jungle.]
[Scene opens with a view of Ben's hands strapped together by the wrists. The view pans up to reveal him marching along with Keamy and his team. The sound of a rifle can be heard cocking as the mercs warily eye the jungle around them.]
KEAMY: So tell me something, Ben. What is it that makes you so... important, hmm?
[Ben marches along in silence, looking straight ahead. Keamy continues.]
KEAMY: I'm curious.... I'm curious as to why Mr. Widmore would pay me so much money just to come out here and capture you and bring you back alive.
[Ben comes to a halt and stares directly at Keamy.]
BEN: Charles Widmore tell you to kill my daughter?
[Keamy just looks back at him.]
[The sound of metal clanking can be heard. Keamy looks over to see Lapidus at the helicopter trying to free himself of the cuffs with a pair of pliers.]
KEAMY: Hey!
[Upon hearing Keamy yell out, Lapidus looks up and stops what he is doing. Keamy marches angrily towards him.]
KEAMY: (to no one in particular) How'd he get the toolbox?
[Lapidus looks disgusted and tosses the pliers back into the chopper.]
FRANK: Damnit!
[One of the mercs grabs Ben by the arm and pulls him along as the group follows Keamy over to the helicopter. Keamy heatedly questions Lapidus upon reaching him.]
KEAMY: Who gave you the toolbox, Frank?
FRANK: (innocently) Ooh, ahh...
[Keamy yells loudly into his face.]
KEAMY: Hey!!
[The sound of jungle foliage being ruffled causes Lapidus to cock his head to the side and look around Keamy. Keamy spins and raises his rifle towards the sound. The rest of the mercs do the same and the sound of many rifles can be heard cocking. Ben kneels behind one of the mercs and Frank, still cuffed to the chopper, looks on as Kate comes running out of the jungle. She comes to an abrupt halt and raises her arms when she sees all the rifles aimed at her.]
KEAMY: Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. You're good right there.
[Kate looks at the jungle behind her, then back at Frank. She is winded and breathing heavily.]
KEAMY: Who are you?
KATE: I'm Kate. I'm one of the passengers of Flight 815.
[Keamy nods towards the jungle behind her.]
KEAMY: Why you running?
KATE: I'm being chased... (points to Ben) by his people.
[Ben looks on in silence. Keamy's face hardens, then he points and gives out orders to his men.]
KEAMY: Kocol... Lacour... Redfern on flank.
[The mercs spread out into the jungle, while Omar stands guard near the helicopter.]
KEAMY: Come here.
[Keamy grabs Kate by the wrist and drags her towards Ben.]
KATE: Whoa. Hey.
KEAMY: Get on your knees.
[With a forceful shove from Keamy, Kate goes down to her knees with a grunt.]
KATE: Unh!
KEAMY: Hands above your heads, both of you.
[Keamy raises his rifle and begins surveying the scene around him. Kate and Ben give a look at each other. Lapidus, still standing, looks around as well. One of the mercs is shown slowly checking the jungle around him, rifle raised, looking around for anyone who might be out there. Ben and Kate go from eying each other to looking around and back again. Then the whispering begins, which causes Keamy and his team to eye the jungle nervously. An Other suddenly swings down out of a tree, kicking one of the mercs and coming down on top of him. With a wire wrapped around the mercs' neck, the Other snaps it and one merc is dead, without a chance to warn his team of the impending attack. Keamy eyes in that direction but only sees the jungle staring back at him. Another merc is shown warily checking the jungle, when from the tall grass, an Other jumps out of hiding and catches him around the ankles with a snare. The merc goes down hard on his back but is able to pull the trigger on his rifle, which sends a hail of bullets into the air and alerts Keamy that they are being attacked.]
KEAMY: Now! Spray it!
[Keamy and the remainder of his team begin shooting blindly into the jungle. The bullets begin to fly in all directions. Ben and Kate go to their hands and knees, while Frank has climbed into the chopper to lay low. Others can be seen from the jungle returning fire. One of them catches a merc in the neck with a dart, causing him to go down and shake uncontrollably, as if being electrocuted, before going still in death. Keamy runs over to a large rock and jumps behind it for cover as bullets pepper the area around him.]
KATE: Ben, stay close. Run! Run!
[The two of them take off running into the jungle. Keamy, seeing this, aims in their direction but before he can do anything, is distracted by the shout of Lapidus.]
FRANK: Grenade!
[Keamy turns and boots the grenade away from himself and Lapidus. Unfortunately for Omar, it lands right next to him and explodes, sending his body flying through the air. The shooting has stopped by this point and Keamy is the only remaining merc who is still alive. He rises from his cover and growls in the direction Kate and Ben have taken, then rushes after them. Kate and Ben run through the jungle as fast they can. At one point, Ben looks over his shoulder, then trips and falls to the ground. Kate stops and returns to help him up.]
KATE: Get up. Come on!
[They resume running, now with Keamy hot on their trail and closing fast. Before he can reach them though, from out of the jungle comes Sayid. He tackles Keamy from the side and they both tumble together down the side of a hill. Coming to a stop at the bottom, they both rise to their knees facing each other. Keamy draws his pistol but Sayid grabs him by the wrists and deflects his aim first to one side as Keamy fires, then to the other as Keamy fires again. Keamy then uses Sayid's hold against him to roll him over on his back. Sayid responds with a kick to Keamy's head, which sends Keamy tumbling backwards without his pistol. Sayid, now with the gun, stands to aim at Keamy. Before he can get a shot off, a kick from Keamy sends the gun flying out of his hands and to ground nearby. Sayid rushes towards the gun but before he can get there Keamy grabs his shoulders from behind. Sayid spins low and finds a knife sheathed on Keamy's hip, which he pulls and stabs Keamy in the side. Keamy cries out in pain but when Sayid pulls the bloody knife out and goes to stab him again, Keamy is able to block it by grabbing Sayid's wrists and knocks the knife out of his hands. Keamy is able to catch him with a knee to the gut, then to the jaw, followed by a backhand. Keamy's next two punches are blocked first left, then right by Sayid, who counters with an uppercut to Keamy's jaw. This only momentarily fazes Keamy, who's following backhand connects solidly and puts Sayid down. Keamy spits blood on the ground and goes for the gun again. Sayid rises quickly, grabs a large stick and with a heavy swing, hits Keamy in the back of his leg. After another hit to the back of Keamy's leg, Sayid connects fully with a shot across Keamy's chest, who goes down on his back. Sayid goes to swing the stick down on Keamy's head but is blocked. Keamy, having grabbed the stick, uses Sayid's momentum to roll over backwards, flipping Sayid and ending up on top of him and in possession of the stick. Keamy presses down on Sayid hard now, who struggles to push back but Keamy puts all his weight on it and gets the stick down to Sayid's neck. Keamy appears to have the fight won, when three shots ring out. From behind them, an arm can be seen lowering a gun. Keamy falls to the side off of Sayid, seemingly dead. From the position of lying on his back, Sayid looks up to see Richard Alpert. From the surrounding tall grass, the rest of the Others rise and emerge into the clearing. As Sayid struggles to regain his feet, Kate comes running out of the jungle, followed by Ben. She reaches Sayid and with her helping hand, he is now standing again after his ferocious battle. They look down to Keamy, who is lying motionless with open eyes directed at the sky. Ben, staring wide-eyed as well, turns to face Richard.]
BEN: Thank you for coming, Richard.
RICHARD: My pleasure.
[Kate retrieves Keamy's knife from the ground and Ben turns to her, holding out his bound wrists.]
BEN: Could you cut me free, Kate?
[After a moment's pause, she does as he asks.]
BEN: (to Richard) What was the arrangement?
[Sayid observes the discussion in silence.]
RICHARD: They, uh, help us free you, and... we let 'em off the island.
BEN: Fair enough.
[Ben turns back to Kate.]
BEN: The helicopter is yours.
[Kate looks stunned. Ben glances at Sayid, then back to Kate again.]
BEN: You and Sayid have a safe journey back.
KATE: So we can go?
[Ben begins to leave but turns back when questioned by a disbelieving Kate.]
KATE: Off the island? That's it?
[Sayid continues watching everything in silence.]
BEN: That's it.

[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with Hurley sitting in the common area of the mental hospital. He is attempting to open a candy wrapper. After struggling to open it with his fingers, he finally uses his teeth and achieves his goal. Michael's mother is seen being led in Hurley's direction by a nurse. After she points him out, she departs.]
MICHAEL'S MOTHER: (to the nurse) Thank you, miss. (to Hurley) Are you Hurley?
HURLEY: Yeah.
MICHAEL'S MOTHER: Are you dangerous?
HURLEY: (uncomfortably) I'm sorry, do I know you?
MICHAEL'S MOTHER: No, you don't know me... but you know my grandson.
[When Hurley leans over and looks past her, he sees Walt standing back, waiting. He is no longer the young boy who crash landed on the Island. He is now a much taller teenage boy.]
MICHAEL'S MOTHER: Now we've traveled all the way across country just so he could see you. (pause) I need to know if you're gonna do anything crazy.
HURLEY: I won't do anything crazy.
[Michael's mother steps to the side and allows Walt to approach. Walt timidly walks over to Hurley and takes a seat across from him. He glances at his grandmother as if for reassurance. After a long pause of looking at each other, Hurley speaks first.]
HURLEY: Hey, Walt.
WALT: Hey, Hurley.
HURLEY: You're getting big, dude.
WALT: You know, when you... came back, I was waiting for one of you to come see me, but... nobody did.
HURLEY: I'm sorry.
[After another glance across the room at his grandmother, Walt continues.]
WALT: Do you know who did come see me? Jeremy Bentham. I don't understand why you're all lying.
[Hurley looks to his right, then left, before leaning forward and speaking with a lowered voice, so no one else can hear.]
HURLEY: We're lying... because it's the only way to protect everyone that didn't come back.
WALT: Like my dad?
HURLEY: Like your dad. Yeah.
[Scene closes with the two staring at each other in silence.]
[ISLAND]
[At the greenhouse.]
[Standing nearby the greenhouse, Hurley is opening his sleeve of crackers while Sawyer looks at Jack and Locke through the binoculars for a moment before lowering them. Hurley is standing behind Sawyer.]
SAWYER: What the hell they talkin' about in there, anyway?
HURLEY: I don't know... leader stuff?
[Sawyer scoffs at Hurley's comment, then turns to look at him.]
SAWYER: Where'd you get that?
[Hurley removes a few crackers for himself.]
HURLEY: Came from a box Ben dug up out of the ground. They're good.
[Then offers some to Sawyer, who takes one. After a bite, he makes a pleasant expression of agreement.]
HURLEY: Thanks for coming back for me.
SAWYER: Ah... you got it.
HURLEY: Claire and the baby okay?
[Sawyer looks over to Hurley, then uncomfortably away without responding.]
[Scene shifts to Jack and Locke's conversation inside the greenhouse. They are talking to each other from opposite sides of long shelf of flowers and plants that runs through the middle of the greenhouse.]
JACK: What did you wanna talk to me about, John?
LOCKE: I want you to reconsider leaving the Island, Jack. I would like you to stay.
JACK: You'd like me to stay?
LOCKE: Yeah, that's right.
JACK: You threw a knife into the back of an unarmed woman. You led half of our people across the Island and got most of them killed.
LOCKE: Well, Jack, you put a gun to my head and you pulled the trigger. (shrugs) I was hoping we could let bygones be bygones.
JACK: Well, I'll tell you what. You stay here in your little greenhouse but the rest of us are going home.
LOCKE: But you're not supposed to go home.
JACK: (shouts angrily) And what am I supposed to do? (continues in a sarcastic tone) Oh, I think I remember. What was it that you said on the way out to the hatch? That crashing here was our destiny?
[Locke speaks as he rounds the shelf of plants to the side Jack has been standing on.]
LOCKE: You know, Jack. You know that you're here for a reason. You know it. (comes face to face with Jack) And if you leave... this place... that knowledge is gonna eat you alive from the inside out... until you decide to come back.
[Jack shakes his head in denial.]
JACK: Goodbye, John.
[Jack turns to leave.]
LOCKE: You're gonna have to lie.
[Jack stops and turns back.]
JACK: Excuse me?
[Locke walks up to face him again.]
LOCKE: If you... have to go... then you have to lie about everything. (pause) Everything that happened since we got to the Island. (pause) It's the only way to protect it.
JACK: It's an island, John. No one needs to protect it!
LOCKE: It's not an island... it's a place where miracles happen. And-and-if you-if you don't believe that, Jack, if you can't believe that... just wait till you see what I'm about to do.
JACK: There's no such thing as miracles.
LOCKE: Well... we'll just have to see which one of us is right.
[A voice speaks up from behind Jack.]
BEN: Am I interrupting?
[Jack turns and aims his gun at Ben, who calmly walks by without caring.]
BEN: Good to see you too, Jack. (to Locke) Couldn't find the Anthuriums, could you?
LOCKE: I don't know what they look like.
[Locke follows Ben deeper into the greenhouse, where Ben shakes a flower. Locke holds his hands palm up as if to say, "Oh, those flowers". Ben leans down and grabs the shelves holding the Anthuriums, then slides them up. The shelves makes a creaking sound as they rise and a hidden elevator is revealed. Jack walks closer to them.]
JACK: What are you doing?
BEN: (to Locke) Didn't you tell him?
LOCKE: (looks to Jack) I tried.
BEN: (to Jack) Sayid and Kate are waiting for you at the helicopter. I understand that your people from the beach are being brought to the freighter even as we speak.
JACK: (confused) What?
BEN: I'd love to fill you in on everything you missed, Jack but you, Hugo, James, you need to get moving. If I were you, I'd want to be on that boat within the hour. Good-bye, Jack. (to Locke) Let's go.
[Ben steps inside the elevator and Locke steps closer to Jack.]
LOCKE: Lie to them, Jack. If you do it half as well as you lie to yourself, they'll believe you.
[Locke then joins Ben in the elevator. Ben flips a lever and a door closes behind them. Through the dirty, octagonal shaped window in the door, Jack and Locke stare at each other until the elevator lowers into the depths of the Island.]

[FREIGHTER]
[Scene opens with Michael wheeling a canister of nitrogen across the deck. Sun approaches him, holding Aaron.]
SUN: Michael? What's going on down there?
[Crewman can be seen moving about the deck.]
MICHAEL: You told anybody?
SUN: No, Michael. I-I didn't. Can you... t-turn it off?
[Aaron can be heard making crying sounds.]
MICHAEL: It isn't even on yet. But, yeah, if what's in this tank does what it's supposed to do... we're gonna be okay. (pause) Look, I'll send Jin upstairs. There's no need for him to be down there with me when he can be up here with you.
[Michael continues towards the hatch door but stops when Sun speaks again.]
SUN: I'm pregnant.
[She smiles at him and he returns the gesture in kind.]
MICHAEL: Congratulations, Sun.
[Michael picks up the cannister and enters the hatch doorway, while Sun watches him go.]
[Back in the room with the C-4, Michael sets the canister down next to Desmond.]
DESMOND: You're gonna what?
MICHAEL: Freeze it. This is liquid nitrogen. We use it in the refrigeration hold. The bomb needs a charge from the battery to detonate, right? And the battery runs on a... a chemical reaction. I spray the battery. I can keep it cold. No reaction.
DESMOND: And what's the catch?
MICHAEL: The catch is we only have one canister. We use it up, we're right back where we started.
DESMOND: Well, shouldn't we save it till the light turns red?
MICHAEL: If we see that light turn red and the battery's not already cold, that is the last thing we will ever see. Either way... at least we'll have a warning, buy ourselves some time.
DESMOND: Alright, um, freeze the battery.
[Desmond steps over to a cabinet to retrieve a notebook and pencil.]
DESMOND: Jin, help me trace back these wires, make a list of where each of them goes to.
[With a gloved hand, Michael turns a knob on the canister and with the other, holds the hose and aims the nitrogen at the battery.]
[ISLAND]
[At the beach camp.]
[A view of the Kahana is shown on the ocean's horizon, then the view pans to the left where Dan is arriving back at the beach with the Zodiac raft. Two redshirts arrive to help him pull the raft ashore.]
DANIEL: Thank you.
[Juliet comes running up to the raft.]
JULIET: Did you get them all to the boat?
DANIEL: Yeah, everybody's safe.
JULIET: Are they coming closer?
[Dan begins walking towards the main encampment while speaking with Juliet.]
DANIEL: They fixed the engine and they're gonna get as close to the island as they can without hitting the reef, so the next trip shouldn't take so long. I'm just gonna get some water and I'll come back in a minute.
JULIET: Okay, I'll get the next group ready to go.
DANIEL: Thank you.
[Juliet calls after the departing Dan, who stops to look back.]
JULIET: Dan!
DANIEL: Yeah?
JULIET: Thanks for helping us.
DANIEL: Absolutely.
[They share a smile before Dan continues on.]
JULIET: (to the people standing around) Okay! Let's go!
[Scene switches over to the kitchen area of the camp, where Miles is sitting on a table. Charlotte can be seen in the background at the other end of the table packing a bag. Miles is eating from a can of DHARMA peanuts when Rose approaches him.]
ROSE: Uh, who told you you could eat those peanuts?
[Miles looks around, waves the can of peanuts in front of him and responds with sarcasm.]
MILES: May... may I eat these peanuts?
ROSE: I'm gonna keep my eye on you, Shorty.
[After Rose walks away carrying a fruit basket, Dan comes walking up.]
DANIEL: Miles...
[Then he motions to the side with his head.]
MILES: Somethin' wrong with your neck?
DANIEL: Follow me, please.
[Dan continues past Miles to Charlotte.]
CHARLOTTE: Dan, you're back. Hey, what's wrong?
[Miles joins them.]
DANIEL: I'm leaving in ten minutes to take the next group of people to the freighter. You need to make sure that you're with me on that raft, alright?
MILES: Well, don't worry about me, 'cause I'm gonna stay.
[Dan is speaking in a very serious but hushed tone of voice.]
DANIEL: Miles, no, uh, uh... I don't think I'm getting across the... direness of the circumstance.
MILES: Oh, no, you're very dire... but I'm still gonna stay.
DANIEL: (to Charlotte) Hey, ten minutes.
CHARLOTTE: Yep.
[Dan leaves the two of them then. Charlotte picks up her bag but takes pause when Miles starts speaking to her.]
MILES: I'm surprised you wanna leave.
CHARLOTTE: Sorry?
MILES: It's just weird. You know, after all that time you spent trying to get back here.
CHARLOTTE: What do you mean... "get back here"?
[Charlotte tries to look like she doesn't have any idea what he's talking about but Miles just looks at her with a knowing expression.]
MILES: What do I mean?
[Miles makes a strange face at her before walking away and Charlotte looks off to the side, seemingly disconcerted that he knows something.]
[At The Orchid.]
[Locke and Ben slowly descend into the depths of the Island. The dimly lit elevator rattles and creaks as it moves.]
LOCKE: How deep is the station?
[With a brief glance over at Locke, he responds.]
BEN: Deep.
[When they finally reach the bottom, another door with an octagonal shaped window rises to reveal the The Orchid. Ben raises the bar that's hinged on one side and enters the station first. The bar begins to fall back into place but Locke catches it, exits the lift and lowers the bar down behind him. Ben begins flipping many switches, turning on lights and powering up the station. As Locke follows him in, Ben continues turning on lights and flipping switches.]
LOCKE: Is this the magic box?
[Ben momentarily stops what he's doing to give Locke his "stop asking stupid questions" glare but instead of replying with sarcasm, he simply replies.]
BEN: No, John. It's not.
[Ben crosses the room a desk and turns on another lamp.]
LOCKE: What is all this stuff for?
[Ben is reading from a notebook and responds without looking up.]
BEN: Same things that all the DHARMA stations are for... (flips a page) silly experiments.
LOCKE: What king of experiments?
BEN: You know what John?
[Ben stops reading, opens a desk drawer and removes a video. He continues speaking as he walks by, handing the tape to Locke.]
BEN: Why don't you watch this very informative video that will answer some of your questions...
[He turns on a TV and wheels it over for Locke to use.]
BEN: ...and I'll take care of some business.
[Ben steps to another piece of equipment, flips yet another switch and a door on the side of the station opens down the middle with the sides retracting into the walls to reveal a small, tiled room. Locke places the video in the VCR and sits down to watch it, while Ben goes about the room placing various objects in the small room. The video opens with the words "THE DHARMA INITIATIVE. 6 OF 6. ORIENTATION" in white across a black screen. The next scene is a picture of the Orchid Station logo with the words underneath it, "ORIENTATION - STATION 6 - THE ORCHID". Ben continues placing objects in the room as the orientation video begins. It is another video with Halliwax in it, similar to the ones from the other stations. The video distorts in various places from the age of it as Locke watches.]
HALLIWAX: Hello. I'm Dr. Edgar Halliwax... and this is the orientation film for station six of the DHARMA Initiative. As you've no doubt surmised, station six, or "The Orchid," is not... a botanical research unit. The unique properties of this island have created a kind of Casimir effect, allowing the DHARMA initiative to conduct unique experiments in both space and time.
[Locke continues watching the video while Ben tends to his "business". At first, the video was only showing a head shot of Halliwax. As the scene returns to the video, the view has panned out to show Halliwax standing next to the same room that Ben has been busy putting stuff inside. Halliwax is holding a white bunny with the number fifteen on it's side.]
HALLIWAX: This... is "the vault", constructed adjacent to a pocket of what we believe to be negatively charged exotic matter. Great care must be taken to avoid leaving inorganic materials inside the chamber.
[At this point, Locke briefly glances up and takes notice that Ben is definitely putting inorganic materials inside the vault. The video continues with Halliwax placing the bunny inside the vault.]
HALLIWAX: The electromagnetic energy within the Island can be highly volatile and unpredictable. Now for your own safety and the safety of those around you, metallic objects must never be placed within the vault.
[Locke holds up a hand in confusion as Ben places a metal trash can within the vault. In the video, the door closes with the bunny inside the vault and an assistant can be seen working the equipment while Halliwax speaks.]
HALLIWAX: In our first demonstration, we will attempt to shift the test subject 100 milliseconds ahead in four-dimensional space. For the briefest of the moments, the animal will seem to disappear, but in reality...
[At this point, the video begins rewinding. Locke tries pressing buttons and slapping at the VCR to no avail and eventually the TV goes back to showing nothing but a snowy screen. Locke stands and steps over to Ben.]
LOCKE: Hey...
[Ben comes to a stop in front of Locke.]
LOCKE: Is he talking about what I think he was talking about?
BEN: If you mean time-travelling bunnies, then yes.
[Ben continues what he has been doing and places yet another metallic, inorganic object in the vault, which has become quite full of the stuff by now. Locke looks around confusedly.]
LOCKE: You do know that he said specifically not to put anything metal in here.
[Ben stares directly at John, nods silently, then goes for more objects but stops when he hears the sound of the elevator clanking and whirring to life. He walks over to stand next to Locke and they both watch as the elevator door closes and the lift begins to rise.]
LOCKE: You expecting someone?
[Ben does not answer the question. Instead, he asks one of his own.]
BEN: May I have my weapon back?
[cut to commercial]
[In the jungle.]
[Scene opens with Hurley walking through the tall grass with Sawyer in tow. As they approach the helicopter, Sawyer raises his rifle slightly, just in case there is still and danger present. At the chopper, Kate is working on getting Lapidus out of his cuffed predicament while Sayid patrols nearby with a rifle. Hurley calls out when he gets close enough to see it's them.]
HURLEY: Sayid! Kate!
[They both look up to see Hurley. Sayid lowers his rifle, walks over to Hurley and they hug.]
HURLEY: Good to see ya, dude.
[Kate looks up and smiles at the sight of Sawyer, then appears concerned as a laboring Jack belatedly follows the first two out of the jungle. Sawyer taps one of the dead mercs with the barrel of his rifle.]
SAWYER: He say somethin' to tick you off, Freckles?
KATE: Didn't kill that one.
SAWYER: (playfully) Well, which one did you kill?
[Kate steps over to Jack to check on him. Sawyer notices this goes from smiling to looking away disheartened.]
JACK: Where's the baby?
KATE: He's with Sun and they should be at the freighter by now. (looking at the blood from Jack's wound) Are you okay?
JACK: (breathing heavily) I am now.
[Frank, sitting at the helicopter is still working on his cuffed situation when Sawyer walks over to him.]
SAWYER: Hey, Kenny Rogers. What you trying to do there, pick a lock?
FRANK: You got a better idea?
[Sawyer leans his rifle against the chopper and retrieves a hacksaw from the toolbox.]
SAWYER: Hacksaw?
FRANK: For the handcuffs, right?
[Sawyer just smiles back at him before grabbing a wrench out of the toolbox. He slides the wrench between the cuff and Frank's wrist for a brace, then gets at the sawing.]
FRANK: Okay... take it easy.
SAWYER: Alright. Alright.
JACK: Sayid, how'd you get back?
SAYID: I took the zodiac from the freighter.
JACK: Is it safe? A body from the boat washed up on the beach.
SAYID: It's safe now.
[Sawyer finishes cutting through the cuff and Lapidus is finally free. He rubs his wrist, then with a glow in his eyes, he excitedly calls out to the others.]
FRANK: Alright! Let's get the hell outta here!
[Lapidus opens the front door and climbs in as Sawyer puts away the toolbox under the back seat.]
SAWYER: Let's go, Freckles. I've seen enough of this rock.
[Sawyer first helps her on board, then Hurley. Sayid climbs into the co-pilots' seat up front and puts on a headset as the sound of the chopper motor begins to rev up. Jack climbs aboard followed by Sawyer last. Lapidus puts on his own headset and the blades of the helicopter begin to spin.]
HURLEY: (to Jack) After we drop everyone off at the boat, we can come back and look for Claire, right?
JACK: Absolutely.
FRANK: Hands and feet inside the vehicle! Let's go for a ride!
[The group inside the chopper are mostly all smiles as they take off and begin to fly over the Island. A panned out view shows the helicopter hang a turn and head out to sea.]
[At The Orchid.]
[A brief shot of the greenhouse is shown to open the scene. Then, down in The Orchid, the elevator door opens to reveal a pair of heavy boots. A Pair of hand reach down to retrieve a boot knife before the view rises to reveal Keamy. He raises the bar with a clank to exit the lift. With another loud clank, the bar falls back into place as he enters the station. Lights flicker as he limps inside the darkened room. Halliwax can be heard as the orientation video plays in the background.]
KEAMY: I know you're down here, Ben... crouching in the dark... just waiting to take a shot at me.
[A shadowed view of Ben's face is shown as Keamy continues limping into the station.]
KEAMY: Well, you better aim for the head, Ben! Not like your boyfriend, who shot me in the back... like a coward!
[Keamy sees the orientation video playing on the TV.]
KEAMY: (grinning) This body armor's, um, been known to take a bullet or two in its time. (pause) But before you take your shot, Ben... let me tell you about this.
[Keamy removes his jacket to reveal the dead man's trigger attached to his bicep. Ben's face is shown at various times while Keamy speaks.]
KEAMY: See that? I took out a bit of a... a life insurance policy, Ben. It's a heart rate monitor... and it's connected to a radio transmitter. W-we call it a "dead man's trigger", Ben. My heart stops beating... it sends a little signal to the 500 pounds of C-4 that I've got, hardwired... out there on the freighter. (taunting) That'd kill a lot of innocent people, Ben. If you think I'm bluffing, need I remind you of, uh... how your daughter looked as she bled out? Face-down in the grass?
[Keamy hears a footstep behind him, whirls and takes a fighting stance only to see Locke standing with arms raised.]
KEAMY: Who the hell are you?
LOCKE: My name is John Locke... and I have no... conflict with you. (pause) And neither do the people on that boat. (pause) So... why don't you put your knife down? (pause) We can talk about this.
KEAMY: Well, John Locke... I've never really been one for talk.
[With a loud clank, Ben springs from his hiding place behind Keamy. His first strike of the baton knocks the knife from Keamy's hand. After a second, then a third strike, Keamy goes down and Ben picks up the dropped knife.]
BEN: You killed my daughter!
[Ben comes down on top of Keamy, stabbing him in the neck. Keamy screams out in pain.]
BEN: You killed my daughter!
[Ben gets another stab into Keamy's throat before Locke can stop him.]
LOCKE: Ben! Ben! Ben, stop! No, no! Stop!
[Locke drags a screaming Ben off a gagging Keamy, then goes back to check the wounds in Keamy's neck.]
LOCKE: Ben, what did you do?
[Ben trembles in silence now. Locke looks over at the beeping, blinking green light on Keamy's arm.]
LOCKE: You just killed everybody on that boat.
[The look on Ben's face is cold and emotionless as he replies.]
BEN: So?
[cut to commercial]
[At the beach camp.]
[Dan is squatting next to a tree on the beach. He sees Charlotte approaching, rises with his bag and heads down to her.]
DANIEL: Hey, Charlotte! Listen, uh, I wanted to say before you get on the boat, please-
CHARLOTTE: I'm gonna stay, Daniel... for now, anyway.
DANIEL: Charlotte... there is no more "for now". If you don't come with me, "for now"... could be forever.
CHARLOTTE: Nothing's forever.
DANIEL: Why?
CHARLOTTE: Would it make any sense if I told you I was still looking for where I was born?
[He looks down and away, then back up to her.]
DANIEL: (confused) N-no?
[She smiles and laughs, which causes him to join her but when she kisses him on the cheek he only looks sad.]
CHARLOTTE: Goodbye, Daniel.
[As she turns and departs, he looks longingly after her, then slowly turns to head back to the raft.]
[Scene shifts to the raft where Juliet is helping a group of redshirts prepare to board. When she sees Dan approaching, she walks over to him.]
DANIEL: Let me guess... you're not coming.
JULIET: I promised I wouldn't leave until I got everyone here safely off this island. Relax. I'll still be here when you get back.
DANIEL: Right, right... when I get back.
[With a squeeze of her arm, he takes his leave and walks down to the people at the raft.]
DANIEL: Okay. Everybody ready? Let's get started.
[The group picks up the raft and heads down to the water with it. Dan stares out over the ocean to the freighter.]
DANIEL: (whispers) Off we go.
[Then heads after the raft himself.]
[FREIGHTER]
[Michael sprays more nitrogen on the battery.]
DESMOND: I think I might have something. Okay, so... so... if I cut this wire, it... it should disconnect the firing mechanisms.
[Michael watches nervously as Desmond readies to cut the wire but Jin shouts out.]
JIN: Stop!
[Muttering something in Korean, he points out a trail of wires connected to a section of the C-4.]
JIN: No good.
DESMOND: Damn it! I-I just don't know enough!
[Desmond pauses while he looks desperately around the room.]
DESMOND: H-how do we even know your little freezing trick's doing anything?!
MICHAEL: We'll know if that light turns red and we're still here.
DESMOND: How much stuff do ya have left?
[Michael looks down at the gauge.]
MICHAEL: We got a quarter tank.
DESMOND: What happens if we can't deactivate the bomb?
[Michael shakes his head before responding.]
MICHAEL: We better get everybody the hell off this boat.
[Scene shifts back to the group on the helicopter, who are searching for the freighter. Frank clicks a few switches overhead and continues flying. No one is speaking. Then, Frank looks down at his fuel gauge and notices it dropping fast. He gives it a few taps.]
SAYID: What's the matter?
FRANK: We're losing fuel.
JACK: What?!
[Frank turns towards the back and shouts so everyone can hear.]
FRANK: We're losing fuel! Look outside, tell me if you can see anything!]
[Kate and Hurley look out to check their side, while Sayid cracks open his door to check his. He spots a steady stream of fuel coming from a hole in the side of the chopper.]
SAYID: We have a fuel leak! A bullet must have pierced the tank!
FRANK: We gotta find a place to set her down!
JACK: No, don't land!
FRANK: What?!
JACK: There's no fuel on the Island! We've gotta get to the boat or this chopper's useless!
FRANK: I'm telling ya, I don't see the boat!
JACK: Well, then keep looking!
[Frank looks checks the fuel gauge again, which is steadily going down.]
FRANK: We gotta get every ounce of extra weight off this chopper now! Anything that's not bolted down, toss it out!
[The group begins tossing stuff out of the helicopter. Bags, cases, the toolbox, everything they can find.]
JACK: Now what?! Is that enough?! Do we make it?!
FRANK: I'd feel a hell of a lot better if we were a few hundred pounds lighter!
[Hurley looks self-consciously down at the ocean.]
FRANK: Well, if we don't make it, we're still close enough to ditch it on the beach.
JACK: No, hey! Do not go back to the Island!
FRANK: We might not have a choice, Doc.
[Sawyer sets his face in determination, looks down, then over to Kate.]
SAWYER: Hey!
[When Kate turns to look at him, he leans over and whispers something in her ear. He leans back a bit to face her and their eyes meet.]
KATE: Why are you telling me this?
[Sawyer responds by grabbing her face and giving her a passionate kiss. He breaks the kiss and looks closely at her.]
SAWYER: Just do it, Freckles.
[Jack watches the whole scene go down. Then without hesitation, Sawyer leaps from the helicopter into ocean.]
KATE: Sawyer!
[She calls out after him but it is too late by then. With a big splash, he lands in the ocean below. Everyone looks down until they see him rise from under the water and break the surface. With one last look at the helicopter, Sawyer turns and begins the long swim back to the Island.]
[Scene ends with a close-up of Kate's face. She closes her eyes and a single tear goes trickling down her face.]

Part 3
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with a view of the left rear corner of a black car. It's nighttime. A darkened field of grass can be seen in the background. The car is parked and is covered with little droplets of rain. The view pans to the left along the side of the car and stops at the driver's side window. A man is sitting inside and reading something. A hand knocks on his window and he looks up. After rolling down his window, Sayid's recognizable voice can be heard asking him a question.]
SAYID: Excuse me, sir. I'm sorry to bother you but do you have the time, please?
[After looking down at his wristwatch, he begins to answer.]
MAN IN CAR: Yeah. It's eight fif-
[The barrel of a pistol with a silencer on it rises and fires, stopping him from completing his answer. Two more shots are fired and blood splatters across the passenger side window. A camera angle from the other side of the car rises to show Sayid holding the pistol still aimed at the man. After a quick glance inside at the dead man, Sayid lowers his pistol and moves on. A blurry white sign with lights shining on it and black lettering is revealed when he leaves. The camera focuses in on the sign and it reads, "Santa Rosa: Mental Institute".]
[Scene shifts inside the institute. Sayid is ascending a darkened stairway. It is eerily quiet and no one else is around. At the top, he begins walking down a corridor, checking room numbers as he goes.]
[Scene shifts inside one of the rooms and Hurley can be seen sitting at a table with a chess game in progress on it. The view pans to an empty chair across from him. The door to the room opens and Sayid enters, causing Hurley to look up at him.]
HURLEY: Sayid.
SAYID: Hello, Hurley.
[Sayid closes the door behind him and checks out the window, while Hurley looks back down to the chess board.]
HURLEY: I think visiting hours are over, dude.
[Sayid turns away from the window to face Hurley.]
SAYID: This isn't a visit. I want you to come with me.
[Hurley continues looking down at the chess board as he speaks.]
HURLEY: Come with you where?
SAYID: Somewhere safe.
HURLEY: And why would I go anywhere with you? I haven't seen you in, like, forever.
SAYID: Because circumstances have changed.
HURLEY: What circumstances?
[Sayid takes a step closer to the table.]
SAYID: Bentham's dead.
[This causes Hurley to look back up at Sayid.]
HURLEY: What?
SAYID: Two days ago.
HURLEY: What happened?
SAYID: They said it was suicide.
HURLEY: What do you mean, "they said it was suicide"? And why you call him Bentham? His name is-
SAYID: Don't say it.
[Sayid takes another step closer and leans forward.]
SAYID: We're being watched.
HURLEY: Dude, I've been having regular conversations with dead people. The last thing I need now is paranoia.
SAYID: I just killed a man who's been perched outside this facility for the last week. I'm finding paranoia keeps me alive.
[Hurley glances down for a moment before looking back up to Sayid.]
HURLEY: We're not going back, are we?
SAYID: No. Just somewhere safe.
[Hurley pauses and looks down, then moves his hand away from the chess board before replying quietly.]
HURLEY: Okay then.
[When Hurley rises from his seat, Sayid steps to the door and opens it. Hurley begins to follow but pauses to look back at the table.]
HURLEY: Hold on a sec.
[Hurley moves his black queen to a corner spot on the board and takes out a white rook.]
HURLEY: Checkmate, Mr. Eko.
[Hurley then exits the room. After a glance down at the board, Sayid follows.]
[FREIGHTER]
[The group on the helicopter continues flying over the open sea, desperately searching for the Kahana.]
SAYID: Where's the freighter?
FRANK: I don't know. I stayed on course. They must have it on the move again.
SAYID: How much fuel?
[Lapidus checks the fuel gauge again, which is getting dangerously close to zero.]
FRANK: Four, five minutes worth, unless somebody else wants to jump.
JACK: (to Kate) As soon as we get to the boat, we'll go back for him.
HURLEY: Hey! There it is! The boat! I see it! Behind us!
[Jack smiles as the chopper turns and heads for the freighter.]
[ISLAND]
[At The Orchid.]
[Keamy is lying on the floor, bleeding out. The dead man's trigger on his arm is still blinking green and beeping but slower now. Locke rips a white sheet in half in an attempt to make a tourniquet. Ben is sitting close by with his back against a wall. A blank expression covers his face.]
LOCKE: Ben, help me. If he dies, everybody on that boat dies.
[Keamy struggles with great difficulty to breath.]
BEN: (emotionlessly) That's not my problem, John.
[Locke tries in vain to stop the bleeding of Keamy's neck wounds. In a ragged voice, Keamy speaks what will be his last words. Ben leans close to hear.]
KEAMY: Wherever you go... Widmore... he'll find you.
BEN: Not if I find him first.
[Keamy painfully exhales his final breath.]
LOCKE: (shaking Keamy) Hey. No. No. Hey. Hey! Hey!
[After one final beep of green coming from the dead man's trigger, a small red light turns on. Keamy is dead.]
[FREIGHTER]
[The red light on the battery rigged to the C-4 turns on. Jin looks up and notices it first, followed by Michael, then Desmond last. After a short moment, Michael speaks in a dreadful tone of voice.]
MICHAEL: You two need to go now. Get everybody off the boat. We have maybe five minutes left in the tank. Go!
JIN: (to Desmond) You go. Go.
[Jin takes the notepad from Desmond and grabs the pencil off the table.]
JIN: I stay.
[After Desmond leaves the room, Jin looks gravely at Michael, then continues trying to find a way to disarm the bomb. With another spray of nitrogen onto the battery, Michael stares at the glowing red light.]
[Scene shifts briefly outside to show the chopper getting closer by the second.]
[Desmond runs swiftly through the inside of the freighter, up a flight of stairs and outside. He sprints past a crewman who is spraying down the deck towards a pile of life jackets. He starts to pick some up but stops and looks up at the sound of the helicopter closing in fast.]
DESMOND: Oh, bloody hell.
[After dropping the life jackets back onto the pile, he runs towards the landing platform, waving his arms wildly in the air and yelling at the top of his lungs.]
DESMOND: Don't land! You can't land! Go back!
[Desmond continues yelling but the group on the chopper can't hear him over the sound of the whirling blades and continue to descend. Sayid removes his headset.]
DESMOND: Go back! There's a bomb! Get away from the boat! You can't land!
JACK: Did he say bomb?!
DESMOND: Don't land!
JACK: What are you doing?!
FRANK: I don't care what the hell he's screaming! I'm flying on fumes! I gotta put this bird down!
DESMOND: No! Don't! Land!
[Inside the armory, Michael sprays a bit more nitrogen on the battery. A glimpse at the gauge reveals the tank is in the red and nearing empty.]
[Back on deck, the helicopter has landed. Sun is standing nearby, holding Aaron and looking nervous. Desmond runs over to Sayid.]
DESMOND: (frantically) No! No! Look, you don't understand! Jin and Michael are doing everything they can but there's no time!
[Lapidus works at patching the hole in the gas tank with some duct tape.]
DESMOND: You've gotta get off the boat now!
JACK: (to Lapidus) How long till we can fly again?
FRANK: Somebody patch the other hole where the bullet came out!
DESMOND: Give it to me, I'll do it!
FRANK: Here! Somebody pump some gas!
SAYID: I'll handle the fuel.
[Jack opens the cover to the gas tank and Sayid grabs the fuel.]
FRANK: Get that life raft right there! Come on! Let's go!
[Sayid puts the nozzle into the fuel receptacle while Jack operates the canister to pump it in.]
[Sun starts towards the hatch entrance to the lower decks but is stopped by Kate.]
KATE: Hey, Sun!
[Aaron cries out.]
KATE: Sun! Where you going? We gotta go!
SUN: Jin's below with Michael. I can't-
KATE: No, no, there's no time! There's no time. We have to go!
SUN: I won't leave him!
KATE: Okay. You get the baby on the chopper. I'll get Jin. Alright?
[A crewman goes running by carrying life jackets.]
[Lapidus comes running around the front of the chopper and yells to Jack and Sayid before climbing into the pilot's seat.]
FRANK: Just keep pumping till I get it started! That'll be enough to get us to the island.
[Back in the depths of this ship, Jin and Michael are running out of time. Michael taps at the gauge, which is almost completely at zero. Another spray of nitrogen comes out on the battery. Jin looks down at the notebook, which has an incomplete diagram of the wiring.]
MICHAEL: Jin, you gotta go. Nothing more we can do, man.
JIN: No! I can find-
MICHAEL: Hey, come on. It's over. I'm almost out of this stuff. Listen, you are a father now. (points at Jin emphatically) Get to your wife and get her home.
[Jin gazes back at Michael.]
JIN: (nods) Thank you, Michael.
MICHAEL: You're welcome. Go!
[Jin takes off at a run, while Michael remains behind.]
[In the chopper, Frank begins firing up the motor, preparing to take off.]
[Jin is shown sprinting down the hallway inside the freighter.]
JACK: (to Lapidus) Hey! Not yet!
FRANK: Your buddy said we got five minutes. This was three minutes ago. If you're going, this is it. Let's go!
[Kate is heading for the hatch entrance to the lower decks near a group of crewman who are all donning life jackets.]
JACK: Kate! Come on!
KATE: Jin's still inside!
[Another shot of Jin running through the freighter, trying desperately to reach the deck.]
[Sayid opens the side door of the chopper, while Hurley helps Sun aboard.]
KATE: Jin's still inside. We can't leave him behind.
[Jack reaches Kate and grabs her by the hand to pull her back towards the helicopter.]
JACK: Come on. Listen, I'm not leaving without you. We gotta get out of here now.
[The chopper blades start to spinning and Lapidus yells out.]
FRANK: Let's go!
[Jack and Kate reach the helicopter at a run. Sayid, Hurley, Sun, Aaron and Desmond are all already inside. Kate boards, then Jack climbs in last at they begin to lift off the deck. Aaron is crying loudly at all the commotion.]
DESMOND: Give me a minute! No! Wait!
SUN: Where's Jin?!
[Jin finally reaches the stairs and runs up them and out onto the deck. Just in time to see the helicopter has already taken off. He begins running towards them, waving his arms and shouting in Korean but it is too late. Sun looks down in fear as her husband is still on the freighter.]
SUN: It's Jin!
[Jin continues shouting in Korean at the departing helicopter. Jack holds Sun back as she continues to scream frantically.]
SUN: Jin! Jin! We have to go back! Turn around!
FRANK: We can't do it!
SUN: We have to! We need to go back!
[In the freighter, Michael sprays the last of the nitrogen on the battery. He hears whispering and begins looking around the room. Suddenly, Christian is standing in the room with him.]
CHRISTIAN: You can go now, Michael.
[Confused, Michael looks at him and speaks his final words.]
MICHAEL: Who are you?
[From the view of the helicopter, the Kahana explodes into a giant ball of flames. The chopper shakes and rattles from the blast wave and the freighter makes a loud groaning sound as it begins going down. Sun screams at the top of her lungs and sobs uncontrollably.]
SUN: Jin!!!!! Ahh!!!!!
[cut to commercial]
[An aerial view of the helicopter flying away from the remnants of the Kahana is shown. It's mostly under by now, with only small bits of wreckage, flames and a rising plume of smoke remaining. Sun is still screaming frantically.]
SUN: Go back lower! We have to go find Jin!
JACK: Sun, there's nobody down there!
SUN: You can't see anything from here!
FRANK: We didn't get enough fuel! We can't go back!
SUN: Go lower! I know he's there!
SAYID: Sun, I'm-Sun, I'm so sorry.
SUN: He's down there!
SAYID: He's not down there!
SUN: I know he's down there!
FRANK: We gotta go!
SUN: No! I'm not leaving him!
SAYID: We can not get there!
SUN: No, we're not leaving him! We're not! Turn back around!
[Jack looks sorrowfully down at the wreckage for a moment while Hurley attempts to restrain Sun.]
JACK: Sun! Sun! It's gone!
[Sun finally stops screaming and Aaron continues wailing.]
JACK: He's gone.
[Kate tries to comfort Aaron. Desmond looks down and holds his face in his hands. Sun is now in complete shock.]
JACK: Lapidus! Fly us back to the Island.
FRANK: You got it.
SUN: No! (sobs) No-no!
[Aaron cannot stop crying. Sun screams once more at the top of her lungs.]
SUN: NO!!!!
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with a pair of heels clicking along a walkway. The view goes up and the back of a woman's head and shoulders can be seen. In the background, is the Tower Bridge in London. A phone rings in her pocket. When she retrieves her cell and answers it, the woman is revealed as Sun.]
SUN: (in Korean) Hello?
MRS. PAIK: (in Korean) Hello! Someone wants to talk to you! Say hello to your mother, Ji Yeon.
JI YEON: (in Korean) Mama. Mama.
SUN: (in Korean) Hello my love.
MRS. PAIK: (in Korean) Where are you?
SUN: (in Korean) I'm in London. I leave tonight. Just finishing up a little business.
MRS. PAIK: (in Korean) Fly safe.
SUN: (in Korean) I will. Good-bye mother.
[A short distance away, Charles Widmore exits a restaurant and speaks with three of his associates.]
WIDMORE: All right, guys. Thanks.
[They depart in one direction and he in the other. After closing and pocketing her phone, she approaches him.]
SUN: Excuse me, Mr. Widmore?
WIDMORE: Yes.
SUN: I'm Sun Kwon... Mr. Paik's daughter. I'm the managing director of Paik Industries.
WIDMORE: Yes, of course. How is your father?
SUN: Excellent, thank you.
WIDMORE: Quite the golfer. I believe I owe him dinner after our last game.
[Sun changes her tone from pleasant to serious.]
SUN: Are you really going to pretend that you don't know who I am?
WIDMORE: I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about, Ms. Kwon.
SUN: Yes, you do know, Mr. Widmore. Just like you know we've been lying all this time about where we were... and what happened to us there. (pause) You and I have common interests.
[Sun retrieves her business card from her pocket and hands it to Widmore.
SUN: When you're ready to discuss them... call me. (pause) As you know... we're not the only ones who left the Island.
[Sun turns and begins walking away. Widmore looks down at the card, then back up to her departing figure.]
WIDMORE: Ms. Kwon?
[Sun stops to look back at him.]
WIDMORE: Why would you want to help me?
[She merely looks at him, then turns and walks away without responding.]
[ISLAND]
[At The Orchid.]
[Locke walks towards Ben, pointing accusingly.]
LOCKE: Why?!
BEN: Why what?
[Ben has resumed his business of adding inorganic, metallic objects into the vault.]
LOCKE: Why did you kill him when you knew it would destroy the boat?
BEN: Well, John, I really wasn't thinking straight. Sometimes... good command decisions get compromised by bad emotional responses.
[The objects Ben toss into the vault make a loud clanking noise.]
BEN: I'm sure you're gonna do a much better job of separating the two than I ever did.
[Ben flips a switch on the control panel for the vault and the door closes.]
LOCKE: What are you doing?
[Ben answer is to flip more switches. As the vault begins to activate, sparks can be heard going off.]
LOCKE: (shouts) I asked you a question!
BEN: If I were you, I'd duck.
[The two duck behind the control panel and a large explosion takes place within the vault. Loud sparks continue to go on inside the little room after the explosion.]
BEN: I better change.
[Ben walks off, leaving Locke standing there looking confused.]
[At the beach camp.]
[Juliet is sitting on the sand staring out at the ocean, holding a partially empty bottle of DHARMA rum. The view switches to the waves crashing on the shore and Sawyer can be seen swimming up in the surf. When he reaches the beach, he walks up to her.]
SAWYER: (pleasantly) Nice day for a swim.
JULIET: What are you doing here?
[Sawyer is breathing heavy from his long swim back to the beach but responds with a smile.]
SAWYER: Decided to take a dip.
[He looks down at the bottle of rum.]
SAWYER: Whatcha celebratin'?
[Juliet responds in a sadly quiet voice.]
JULIET: I'm not celebrating.
[Sawyer looks confused and Juliet looks past him at the ocean. He turns follow her gaze. On the horizon of the sea, a plume of smoke is rising into the sky. He looks back to her and asks in a concerned voice.]
SAWYER: That our boat?
[Juliet appears to be on the verge of tears.]
JULIET: It was.
[Sawyer takes a fearful look back to the plume of smoke on the horizon.]
[cut to commercial]
[At The Orchid.]
[Ben opens a locker door and removes a heavy jacket from inside. While putting the jacket on, a brief glimpse of a DHARMA logo can be seen on it in the dim lighting of the room.]
LOCKE: What's that for?
BEN: I'm going somewhere cold.
LOCKE: Then where is mine?
[Ben closes the locker door as he responds.]
BEN: You don't need one because you're not going with me.
[Locke follows when Ben turns and starts walking through the station.]
LOCKE: Yes, I am going with you.
BEN: No, John, you're not.
LOCKE: Jacob told me what we had to do. You don't get to make all the decis-
BEN: He told you what to do but he didn't tell you how, because he wants me to suffer the consequences.
LOCKE: What consequences?
[Ben slows to a stop, then turns to face Locke. After a few steps to get close to Locke, he responds in a resigned tone of voice.]
BEN: Whoever moves the Island can never come back.
[Ben looks away as he continues to speak.]
BEN: So I'd like you to get on the elevator, John, and go back up. Richard and my people will be waiting two miles east of the Orchid.
LOCKE: Waiting for me.
BEN: Ready, willing and able to share what they know...
[Ben looks John in the eyes again.]
BEN: And then they will follow your every word. (pause) Good-bye, John.
[Ben holds his hand out to shake Locke's, who only looks down at the hand, then back up at Ben.]
BEN: (sincerely) Sorry I made your life so miserable.
[John looks back down to Ben's extended hand, then shakes it. Ben turns to walk to the other side of the room.]
LOCKE: What do I tell 'em to do?
[Ben retrieves a crowbar that was leaning against the wall before facing Locke again. He takes moment for pause before speaking again.]
BEN: You'll find your way, John. You always do.
[Scene closes with Locke giving Ben a long stare, as if he may never see him again.]
[In the jungle.]
[The jungle buzzes with the life of many chirping birds as Locke slowly passes through. The crackle of a fire and voices can be heard in the background. The view pans to the right and two Others regard John. Upon hearing the clank of pots and pans, he looks to his right. Below him, in a clearing, is the Others' encampment. At first some, then more see Locke standing over them and turn to look up. Richard Alpert notices this and turns to look up at John as well. With a friendly smile and a nod, he takes a few steps closer and speaks.]
RICHARD: Hello, John.
[The entire group of Others have stopped what they were doing to gaze up at him.]
RICHARD: Welcome home.
[Scene ends with a close-up of Locke's face. His growing smile portrays a sense of belonging.]
[At The Orchid.]
[Ben is clearing out the vault of all the inorganic, metallic materials he had used to destroy it earlier. Where the back wall of the vault used to be, the explosion has created a large hole that Ben goes through to enter a cave-like tunnel. He walks forward with a crouch because of the low-ceilinged tunnel. At the end of the tunnel, Ben is greeted by the top of a ladder, which leads down a shaft. The view looking down the shaft reveals a layer of ice blocking the way. After descending the ladder to the blockage and giving a little tap of it with his foot to determine the thickness of it, Ben kicks down hard with his boot and the ice shatters, clearing the way. He leans down and peers into a freshly revealed room with an eery white glow about it from the layer of ice that seems to be covering everything. He turns and continues his descent. Ben takes one step down the ladder into the frozen room, then another. His next sends him crashing to the floor because the step has broken. The crowbar makes a loud clatter as it hits the ground. During his fall, Ben caught his upper right arm on an exposed nail, which ripped through the sleeve of his jacket and slashed his bicep. This leaves Ben lying on the floor, grimacing in pain and grasping at his arm for a moment. He crawls to his knees, breathing heavily and still holding his arm, then staggers to his feet. Ben retrieves a small box of matches from his pocket, strikes a match and uses it to light an old oil lamp that's hanging from a nearby pillar. The lamp rattles noise into the silence as he bumps against it. Under the light of the lamp, he looks down to the bloody rip in his jacket, then away with a quiet sigh of pain. The view switches to the other side of the room. Revealed is a donkey wheel set halfway into the wall. It is frozen over like everything else in the cold room and has icicles hanging from it. Ben exhales slowly and the steam from his breath can be seen in the lamplight. After slowly walking over to the wheel, he sets one hand first on a handle, then the other. His gaze turns upward.]
BEN: I hope you're happy now, Jacob.
[Leaning hard into one of the handles, he tries to turn the wheel but it does not budge an inch, so he retrieves the crowbar from the ground and begins breaking the ice away from the top of the wheel. After clearing the ice, he slides the crowbar into a hole at the end of one of the handles and uses it for leverage as he desperately tries to get the wheel to move. With a rumble and a lurch, the wheel moves forward a few inches. Ben throws down the crowbar, then wraps both arms around the handle and begins pushing with all his might. The wheel slowly begins to turn, making loud creaking noises as it does. What sounds like a motor of some kind can be heard revving up.]
[The next few scenes switch through the different groups of people scattered about. A loud humming sound can be heard growing throughout each scene.]
[At the Others' encampment, Richard is sitting with palms raised speaking with Locke. Upon hearing the noise they and the Others begin looking to the sky.]
[Sawyer and Juliet rise from their place sitting on the beach, turn and look to the jungle.]
[In the Zodiac, Daniel and his group all turn to look back in the direction of the Island.]
[In the helicopter, everyone looks around with confused looks on their faces.]
DESMOND: Yeah, what is that?
[No one seems to have an answer.]
[Back in the icy room, Ben continues with his task. His breaths are shaky and his feet slide on the floor as he pushes at the slowly turning wheel. Through the hole in the wall where the wheel goes, a light begins to glow as the sound of the revving engine builds. Tears break out on Ben's face and the light grows brighter. Steam coming through the hole glows brightly against the dark backdrop of the rocky wall beneath it. Ben sobs freely now as he finishes pushing the handle all the way to the wall. The sound continues to build and the brightness grows until it reaches a peak and Ben is swallowed by the light.]
[Locke, Richard and the Others duck and raise their hands against the noise in the air and the growing brightness of the sky.]
[Sawyer shields his eyes from the glare with one hand as he stands with Juliet in the bright light.]
[Looking back from the ocean, a white light centered in the middle can be seen growing to engulf the Island.]
[Daniel and the redshirts also duck and attempt to shield their eyes from the building whiteness.]
[In the chopper, everyone continues to look around in a confused state. The sound grows to a roar and the Island is completely engulfed in white. Then all goes silent. As the brightness fades, Jack is the first to open his eyes. He blinks and looks ahead. With a whooshing sound and a circular wave sent out through the ocean, the Island is gone. Aaron gives a cry in Kate's arms. Jack leans forward to look for what isn't there anymore. The helicopter is seen flying across the open ocean. Lapidus looks to one side, around to the other, searching for a piece of land that is nowhere to be seen.]
FRANK: Where's the Island?! Where's the Island?!
[Everyone looks around in disbelief of what just happened.]
FRANK: Where the hell's the Island?!
HURLEY: (stunned) It's gone.
[Sun looks shocked. Jack appears to be in denial.]
FRANK: Where the hell am I gonna land this thing?!
[Jack shouts to be heard over the sound of the helicopter blades.]
JACK: There's another smaller island close by they took us to!
FRANK: I got news for ya, Doc. There's nothing but water in every direction!
[The sound coming from the blades starts to slow and a buzzer starts beeping as Lapidus looks down to the fuel quantity gauge, which now sits at zero. In disgust, he removes his headset and throws it down.]
FRANK: Doesn't matter now. That's it, people! We're out of fuel!
[The view pans around the chopper to each aboard, showing their various expressions from shock to disbelief. First Sayid, then Jack, Sun, Hurley and finally, Kate holding Aaron. From outside, the helicopter begins losing altitude as the blades continue to slow.]
FRANK: Get your life vests on! We're going in! Brace yourselves!
[The group hurriedly begin donning their vests.]
FRANK: Brace yourselves!
[Lapidus struggles with the stick as they make their descent towards the ocean below. Sayid turns and yells to the back.]
SAYID: Desmond! The life raft!
[Desmond grabs the life raft and hands it forward to Sayid.]
FRANK: Hold on!
[Sayid pulls the release cord on the raft and tosses it out the window. It is seen expanding into shape as it falls towards the water. Frank releases the stick at the last moment to brace for impact. With a lurch and a groan, the chopper hits the water and flips tail over cockpit.]
[cut to commercial]
[Jack is underwater and momentarily out of it. Thousands of tiny bubbles rise around him and a muffled voices can be heard shouting.]
FRANK: Sayid, are you okay?!
KATE: Where's Jack?!
FRANK: Kate! Where is he?!
SAYID: Are you okay?
KATE: Hurley, carry the baby.
[Jack blinks his eyes, seems to gather his bearings and swims upwards. He gasps for air after breaking the surface of the water.]
FRANK: Sayid, are you alright?!
SAYID: Yes!
HURLEY: Jack!
[Jack looks around, trying to find everyone.]
FRANK: Where's Desmond?!
[Jack follows the sound of his voice being shouted to the raft, where Hurley is already inside and Kate is handing him Aaron.]
KATE: Get the baby.
HURLEY: I got him.
[As Sun swims towards the raft, Hurley helps Kate aboard.]
FRANK: Desmond!
[Jack turns to see Lapidus has found Desmond floating face down in the water.]
FRANK: Jack! Give me a hand!
[Jack swims towards Lapidus, who has turned Desmond over and is holding him across the chest from behind.]
SUN: Kate!
[Upon reaching the raft, Sun climbs aboard with help from Sayid in the water and Kate in the raft. With help from Jack, Lapidus struggles to get Desmond over to the raft.]
JACK: Let's get him to the raft. Let's get him to the raft.
[Sayid pulls himself up onto the raft and Kate jumps back in the water. Hurley hands Aaron to Sun and goes to help with Desmond. Jack and Lapidus reach the side of the raft with Desmond, where Hurley and Sayid reach down to pull him aboard.]
HURLEY: Is he breathing? Oh my god. Is he breathing?
[Once Desmond is on the raft, he is laid down on the bottom. His head is bloodied from an injury during the crash. Kate, Lapidus and Jack all climb aboard behind him, leaving no one else in the water.]
KATE: Oh my god.
JACK: Oh, come on, Desmond.
[Jack puts his ear to Desmond's mouth to listen for breathing, then begins giving mouth to mouth resuscitation. After blowing some air into Desmond's lungs, Jack begins pressing on Desmond's chest in regular intervals, counting as he goes, trying to get his heart started again. A few tense moments later, Desmond coughs up some water and starts breathing again.]
JACK: Yeah... yeah. Yeah, you're alright.
[Desmond continues coughing and trying to catch his breath, while the rest of the group smiles in relief.]
JACK: You're alright, man. You're okay. That's it.
[Jack helps Desmond up into a sitting position.]
JACK: That's it. You're alright. That's it.
[Desmond seems to finally regain his senses and comes to a rest with one final cough. The view pans around the raft to each of the survivors, showing faces full of exhaustion, shock and relief. A view away from the raft shows it floating alone along the ocean surface. A close-up of Jack shows the physical toll that this ordeal has taken on him.]
JACK: (breathing heavily and whispering) It's okay. It's okay. We're alive.
[Scene closes with a view of Kate, followed by a view of Aaron being held by Sun, then back to Kate.]
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with Kate asleep in bed. A slight creaking noise and crickets chirping can be heard in the background. She stirs slightly, then crawls to the side of the bed and turns on the lamp. As the bright light hits her eyes, she moans slightly and squints. After a brief glance down the empty hallway, she is startled by the phone ringing on the nightstand directly in front of her. She picks up the phone to answer it and sits up further in her bed.]
KATE: Hello?
[Three clicks are all that answer her.]
KATE: Hello? Who's there?
[A voice speaks indistinguishably back at her. As the voice finishes, Kate looks sharply back down the hallway as the sound of a doorknob being turned and a door squeaking open is heard. Kate puts the phone down and rushes out of bed to a set of cabinet doors. After opening them, she throws one box out and to the floor, then retrieves another box. She quickly opens the box and grabs a gun from it to the sound of rattling bullets. She drops the box with gun now in hand and cocks her piece, prepared for the worse. She heads down the hallway and rounds a corner, stopping when she sees that the door to Aaron's room is slightly ajar. She raises her gun, walks forward and knocks the door open. The view switches to inside Aaron's room, looking back at Kate. Claire, with her back turned to Kate, is sitting next to Aaron's bed, gently holding his hand and caressing his arm. With the gun still raised, Kate shouts from the doorway, then again as she steps into the room.]
KATE: Don't move! Don't you touch my son!
[Claire turns from her sitting position to face Kate, who trembles in shock with the realization of who is sitting next to Aaron. She lowers the gun slightly and whispers as she speaks next.]
KATE: Claire?
[Kate's head moves slightly back and forth in disbelief.]
KATE: How did you-
CLAIRE: Don't bring him back, Kate.
[Kate, still in shock, lowers her gun the rest of the way down. Claire stands and walks over to face her.]
CLAIRE: (forcefully) Don't you dare bring him back!
[Scene suddenly switches to Kate in bed again. She awakens with a gasp and sits up. She climbs out of bed and swiftly makes her way to Aaron's room. Upon opening the door, she looks in and sees no one but a sleeping Aaron. The phone call and her encounter with Claire was a dream. After a moment of staring at Aaron from the doorway, she slowly crosses the room to his bed and kneels next to it. Gently, she holds his hand as her face begins to break out in tears.]
KATE: I'm sorry. (pause) I'm sorry.
[Her lip trembles as she tries to fight back the tears. Through all of this, Aaron continues sleeping peacefully.]
[LIFERAFT]
[The group sits around the raft in silence. Hurley is sitting next to Kate, who is holding Aaron. Hurley breaks the silence by inquiring about the baby.]
HURLEY: Is he okay?
KATE: He's fine. It's a miracle.
HURLEY: I can't believe he did it.
KATE: Who did what?
HURLEY: Locke... he moved the Island.
JACK: No, he didn't.
HURLEY: Oh really? 'Cause... one minute it was there and the next it was gone. So... unless we like, overlooked it, dude, that's exactly what he did.... but if you got another explanation, man, I'd love to hear it.
[Jack does not have an answer to this. Frank raises his head from where it had been leaning against the raft. As he peers out into the darkness of the surrounding ocean, he spies a light off in the distance. Leaning forward for a better look or as if to confirm what his eyes had seen, he speaks up to the rest of the group.]
FRANK: God almighty... there's a boat.
[The rest of the group gets up to look.]
FRANK: There's a boat out there!
[Frank stands now to shout in the direction of the light.]
FRANK: Hey! There's a boat! Do ya see it? Hey!
SAYID: Hey!
FRANK: Hey!
HURLEY: Hey!
FRANK: Over here! Does it see us?
[The light turns towards the raft.]
DESMOND: I think it does!
SAYID: Hey!
HURLEY: Hey!
FRANK: Is it turning? It's turning! Hey! Hey!
JACK: (quietly) We're gonna have to lie.
[Everyone stops to look at Jack. Kate takes a step closer to him.]
KATE: What?
JACK: (louder) We're gonna have to lie.
SAYID: Lie about what?
JACK: Everything, all of it... every moment since we crashed on the island.
[The rest of the group look at Jack in silence and confusion until Lapidus speaks up.]
FRANK: Jack, now I know I'm new to this group and everything but isn't this the place where everybody starts jumping up and down and hugging each other?
JACK: Your freighter... those men came to the Island to kill us, all of us. (pause) You said that our plane was discovered on the bottom of the ocean. Well, someone put it there. Someone who wants everyone to think that we're dead. (pause) So what do you think's gonna happen to us when we tell them that that wasn't our plane? (pause) What do you think's gonna happen to the people that we left behind?
KATE: Jack, we can't... we can't pull it off.
[The boat is getting close to them now.]
JACK: Just let me do the talking.
[The group only looks at each other in silence. Men yelling in a foreign language can be heard coming from the boat as it nears the raft. The group on the raft stand looking back in the light of the boat as the shouting continues. Looking back at the raft from the boat, someone on the raft flashes a light in response to the vessel that is closing in on them. When the raft reaches the side of the boat, a man looks over the edge down at the group on the raft. The name on the side of the boat is "Searcher". One of the men yelling in the boat can be heard saying "Miss Widmore". Desmond looks up at the sound of this name. Again he shouts "Miss Widmore" and soon after, on an upper level of the boat, Penny appears to look down at what is going on. She shouts an order down to the man on the deck who had shouted up to her.]
PENNY: Throw them a rope! Take them 'round to the stern!
[On the raft, Desmond looks up at her, his face a mixture of joy and disbelief.]
DESMOND: Penny?
[Their eyes meet for the first time in years. Penny stares down at her long lost love and Desmond, with a huge grin, runs for the rope on the side of the boat to climb aboard.]
DESMOND: Penny! Penny!
[After a moment's pause for the shock to wear off, Penny takes off towards the deck. She dashes along a walkway and rounds the corner just as Desmond finishes climbing onto the boat. Silently gazing at each other, they slowly close the gap between them. Upon reaching each other, they embrace with a longing that is years in the making, first kissing, then hugging. They part slightly and look at each other's faces. Smiles of joy pass between them. Their feelings are so overwhelming that the two can barely speak.]
PENNY: Are you okay?
DESMOND: I'm-I'm fine.
[They continue smiling back at each other, searching for words.]
DESMOND: How did ya find me?
PENNY: Your phone call... I have a tracking station.
[Penny sniffles with tears of joy.]
DESMOND: I love you, Penny... and I'll never leave ya again.
[They kiss again, holding on to each other as if letting go means never seeing each other again.]
[Scene shifts back to the raft. Kate, holding Aaron, climbs aboard with the help of a crewman. Penny and Desmond, holding hands, approach the group as they climb off the raft.]
DESMOND: Uh... this is-this is Penny. This is... Kate and then Aaron.
KATE: Hi.
PENNY: Hi.
[Penny hugs Kate in greeting. Desmond introduces the rest of the group as they climb aboard.]
DESMOND: Um... this is Sun, Sayid, Hurley.
HURLEY: (waves) Hi.
DESMOND: This is Frank.
[Jack is the last off the raft.]
DESMOND: And Jack. Jack, this is-this is Penny.
JACK: It's nice to meet you, Penny.
[Jack reaches forward and shakes Penny's hand. She returns his greeting with a smile.]
PENNY: Hi.
JACK: (serious tone) But we need to talk.
[cut to commercial]
[It's a bright, sunny day. A view from outside the Searcher shows it floating along the open sea. One Week Later is shown in subtitles. Hurley and Sayid are conversing on the rear, upper deck.]
HURLEY: What's this place called?
SAYID: Membata.
HURLEY: (repeats to self) Membata.
[Hurley looks down to see Sun standing on the lower deck, staring silently out to sea, then back up to Sayid.]
HURLEY: Why are we doing this, dude? Sailing three thousand miles to another island?
SAYID: Because it's the only way to keep them safe.
[The view switches to the back of the boat. Desmond and Sayid can be seen still conversing on the upper deck. A crewman helps Frank and Jack toss a raft into the water, then departs. After they steady the raft with a rope that is attached to the front of the raft and tied off to the Searcher, Desmond walks over and hands down two planks of wood to Lapidus for loading on the raft. Penny is sitting at the rear of the boat, holding Aaron, while Kate and Sun stand nearby.]
JACK: How long till we'll hit land?
[Lapidus tosses the planks into the raft as he answers.]
FRANK: Ohhh... if the wind's not too brutal... eight, nine hours. Just long enough to give you a nice, convincing sunburn.
JACK: Well... it's been a pleasure, Frank.
[Jack reaches a hand forward and shakes hands with Lapidus.]
JACK: I hope we never see each other again.
FRANK: Roger that, doctor.
[Frank climbs from the rear of the boat back onto the deck and walks inside. After he passes, Penny walks over towards Kate with Aaron.]
PENNY: Bye, sweetheart.
[After reaching Kate, Penny gently hands Aaron to her and she smiles back at Penny in response. At the back of the boat, Desmond hands Jack two water canteens, which he loads into the raft. In the background, Hurley can be seen climbing down the ladder to the lower deck. The two at the raft face each other to say their farewells.]
DESMOND: Are you sure about this, brutha?
[Jack looks out to sea and nods before looking back to Desmond.]
JACK: Are you sure?
[Desmond sharply exhales and looks over to Penny, then returns his eyes to Jack.]
DESMOND: As long as I've got Penny... I'll be fine.
[Jack nods in answer, then continues in a more serious tone.]
JACK: Don't let 'em find you, Desmond.
[Desmond answers with a silent gaze. Together, they turn to look at the rest of the group on the boat before saying their goodbyes.]
JACK: Then I'll see you in another life, brother.
[The two shake hands and share a smile.]
DESMOND: Aye... I guess you will.
[Desmond climbs back up to the deck and Jack addresses the rest of his group.]
JACK: Alright. Let's go home.
[Some time later, aboard the raft, Jack paddles on one side with a plank of wood, while Sayid does the same on the other side. Hurley sits at the back of the raft with Sun and Kate with Aaron. The initial view is looking at the front of the raft, with nothing but open sea behind them, then the view changes to behind the raft. Ahead of them is a beach lined with huts and mountains in the background. The view switches to the beach now. A young boy holding a fishing pole looks up and sees the group on the approaching raft. Other villagers stop what they are doing to look as well. At the raft, Sayid and Jack stop paddling. Jack is breathing heavily. Kate is clutching Aaron close to her chest. Sun looks on in silence. The two with the planks continue paddling to make up the last little bit of distance between them and the shoreline. From the beach, a few villagers shout in a foreign language and rush towards the shore to meet the arriving raft. Jack and Sayid jump into the water and with the help of the villagers, pull the raft up onto the beach. The Oceanic 6 have arrived back in civilization. A mixture of exhaustion, relief and amazement cover the faces of each of the survivors as they take in their surroundings. The scene closes with Sayid, Sun and Hurley walking further up the beach, while Jack goes to stand with Kate and Aaron.]
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with Jack driving along the streets of L.A. in his truck. It's night out and loud rock n roll music is blaring from the stereo. He pulls to a stop outside the funeral parlor where Jeremy Bentham in his coffin currently resides. After putting the truck into park, he turns off the motor and effectively kills the loud music. Silence ensues. A few moments pass that he just looks out the window at where he has arrived. When he finally decides to open the door, he exits his truck with a stagger, slams the door behind him and begins walking towards the building. He tries opening the door of the funeral parlor but it is locked. Looking to the side, he spies a piece of a concrete block. He picks it up and returns to the door. He slams the block on the doorknob once, twice, then a third strike knocks the handle off. A kick later, the door is open and he enters the building. After crashing through another door, an obviously intoxicated Jack flips a light switch to brighten the room and eyes Bentham's coffin. A clipboard sits on top of it. He slowly walks across the room. Upon reaching the coffin, he holds his head in his hands paces to the foot of it and back. Looking down at the form on the clipboard it reads, "Body Release Form: Jeremy Bentham". He sets the clipboard on a table behind him, opens the lid of the coffin and stares down at it's occupant. A voice from behind startles him, causing him to jump in fear and turn to see who's there.]
BEN: Hello, Jack.
[After seeing who it is though, Jack turns his gaze back to the open coffin, not looking at Ben while they converse.]
BEN: Sorry. Didn't mean to scare you. (pause) Did he tell you that I was off the island?
JACK: Yes, he did.
[Ben takes a few steps closer. He is speaking with an eerily calm voice, in comparison to Jack, who's every inebriated word feels tortured.]
BEN: When did you speak to him?
JACK: About a month ago.
BEN: And Kate?
JACK: Yeah... yeah, he came to see her too.
BEN: And what did he say to you?
JACK: He told me... that after I left the Island... some very bad things happened... and he told me that it was my fault... for leaving... and he said that I had to come back.
BEN: Yes, I heard that you've been flying on passenger planes... hoping that you'd crash. (pause) It's dark, Jack, very dark.
JACK: Why are you here?
[With this question, Jack finally looks Ben in the eyes.]
BEN: I'm here to tell you that the Island won't let you come alone.
[With this statement, Jack loses his nerve again and is unable to continue looking at Ben. This does not stop Ben from taking another step closer though.]
BEN: All of you have to go back.
[Jack shakes his head in denial.]
JACK: Are you... Sayid, I don't even know where Sayid is. Hurley... is insane. Sun blames me for... And then Kate... she won't even talk to me anymore.
BEN: Perhaps I can help you with that.
[Jack painfully looks back to Ben, knowing what he is hearing is the truth, yet unwilling or unable to accept it yet.]
BEN: This is the way it has to be, Jack. It's the only way. You have to do it together, all of you.
JACK: How?
BEN: I have a few ideas.
[Jack nods his head and sighs deeply, seemingly accepting the inevitable, then turns to leave but is stopped by Ben.]
BEN: Jack... I said all of you. We're gonna have to bring him too.
[The view switches to behind the coffin. Jack and Ben stand next to each other a few feet away in the small room looking back. The view begins to rise, going above the coffin and looking down into it. For the first time, the occupant of the coffin is revealed. Jeremy Bentham is... John Locke.]
