[FLASHFORWARD]
[Opening scene is a view of the horizon off in the distance with a big, blue sky stretching over it and a deep, dark ocean beneath. A few lazy clouds float along. Sounds of wind turbulence and the hum of airplane engines can be heard as the view pans back to reveal the inside of a cockpit. On a large instrument panel hangs a rabbit's foot. The pilot reaches up and flips a switch on the overhead panel.]
PILOT: We got a little chop ahead.
[The copilot takes the rabbit's foot and begins rubbing it in one hand.]
PILOT: Put that away man. You're freaking me out.
COPILOT: We need this thing. With the cargo we got back there... (shakes his head) Bad mojo.
[The pilot turns his attention to a woman seated behind him.]
PILOT: Miss Decker?
DECKER: Yes?
PILOT: Wanna head back there and let 'em know we're landing?
DECKER: Sure. Of course.
[After removing her headphones and unbuckling, she stands and exits the cockpit. On her way to the back, she smiles at an unseen person to the side. Once in the cargo hold, she comes to a stop and holds the wall for support.]
DECKER: We're coming in for a landing.
[A closeup of Jack's face is shown. His eyes are closed and he appears to be sleeping. Then the view shifts to Hurley sitting close by.
DECKER: It's a military facility just west of Honolulu. It's completely private.
[Sun and Kate are shown sitting silently with blank faces. Then Sayid, as well.]
DECKER: Y-Your families are already here.
[Jack wakes up and looks around, gathering his bearings. In the first shot of the entire Oceanic 6, Jack and Hurley are shown sitting on the left side of the cargo hold, while Sayid, Sun and Kate with Aaron are shown sitting on the right. Miss Decker continues standing as she addresses the group.]
DECKER: Now, there's a lot of press that wanna speak to you, but as far as Oceanic is concerned, you don't have to speak to any reporters.
[The view pans around to each of the survivors sitting quietly, not saying a word. Until Jack speaks up.]
JACK: (nods in agreement) We'll talk to 'em.
DECKER: (looking concerned, she asks the rest of the group) Is that all right with all of you?
[The other survivors continue to sit silently with blank faces. Jack speaks for them.]
JACK: It's fine. We all agreed. We just... we just wanna get it over with.
DECKER: Okay. Um, they're referring to you as the "Oceanic 6". That's not the best branding as far as we're concerned, but... it's catchy. We'll see you on the ground.
[Decker takes her leave and returns to the front of the plane. Kate bounces Aaron gently on her knee. Jack addresses the group.]
JACK: We all know the story. If we get any questions that we don't wanna answer... or that we can't answer, let's just keep our mouths shut.
[The others just stare at him in silence.]
JACK: It's okay. They'll... they'll think that we're in shock.
[Sun breaks the silence.]
SUN: We are in shock, Jack.
JACK: Well... then, this should be easy.
[The plane is seen landing as Diamondhead and Honolulu, Hawai'i pass by in the background. The view switches from inside the cargo hold to outside the plane as they taxi along the runway. First, Jack is shown, then Kate with Aaron. The plane continues along. The view pans from Sun over to Sayid. The plane slowly pulls to a stop. As the group unbuckles from their seats, the back of the plane opens to a large group of people. Sayid first, then Hurley and the rest of the group slowly stand to exit the plane. Hurley sees his mom and dad and runs to them, receiving a big hug from his mom. Sun walks out and is hugged by her crying mother, while her father, Mr. Paik looks on. Kate with Aaron exits the plane followed by Jack, who finds his mother waiting with a hug. Kate looks around and no one is there for her. Hurley grabs Sayid around the shoulders and joyfully introduces him to his parents. Everyone is shown reuniting with their families, then the scene ends with Kate standing alone with Aaron.]
[ISLAND]
[At the beach camp.]
[Scene opens with a closeup of Kate's face. It's night and tiki torches light the area. Kate is standing off to the side away from the group, who are discussing the beeping sat. phone.]
ROSE: It was Sayid and-and Desmond in the helicopter, right? I mean, it had to be. Why else would they have dropped that thingamabob right over us?
SUN: And why wouldn't they just land?
JACK: (holding the sat. phone) I don't know, but this thing is tracking the chopper. So if they were on it, they want us to know where they're going.
SUN: It's a phone, right? Can't we just call?
[Jack looks to Dan, who is standing with Charlotte.]
JACK: Well?
[Dan nods and Jack hands him the still beeping phone.]
JACK: Don't try anything stupid.
DANIEL: Understood.
[After Dan pushes a few buttons on the phone, a moment later the voices of Frank and Keamy can be heard coming from the helicopter.]
KEAMY: Put it down over there.
CHARLOTTE: Is that from the chopper?
DANIEL: Sh-sh...
FRANK: We're still 5 clicks from the site!
KEAMY: I said put it down, Frank. Okay, gear up, boys. Soon as we hit the ground, we deploy to the Orchid. Heads down! Let's do this.
[The connection on the phone ends. Jack looks to Juliet.]
JACK: You know what "the Orchid" is?
JULIET: No. I didn't hear Desmond or Sayid either.
[Kate has continued standing off to the side, staring out into the dark, up until this time.]
JACK: Kate...
[Kate turns and walks over to him. Jack takes the phone back from Dan.]
JACK: Wanna take a walk?
KATE: Absolutely.
[As the turn to walk away, Jack speaks in a low voice to Kate.]
JACK: I'll get the guns. You get some water, okay?
[Kate heads off in a different direction. Dan takes off as well. Juliet goes after Jack.]
JULIET: You can't possibly be serious. You just had surgery, Jack.
JACK: I'm gonna be fine.
JULIET: If your sutures rip, you're not gonna be fine.
JACK: I can't just sit around wai...
JULIET: (interjecting) Recovery is not "sitting around"!
JACK: I have to do this.
JULIET: Why?
JACK: Because I promised those people... that I would get 'em off this island.
JULIET: Don't bleed to death, Jack.
[Juliet then turns and walks hurriedly away.]
JACK: I'll see ya in a couple hours.
[Scene shifts to Dan and Charlotte. Dan has pulled his journal out of his bag and is quickly searching through it.]
CHARLOTTE: Daniel? What's wrong?
DANIEL: (whispering) Charlotte, did you hear what he said? They're going to the Orchid. They're using the secondary protocol!
CHARLOTTE: What are you talking about?
[Dan continues flipping through his journal until he finds the page he wants. It says THE ORCHID with the symbol for the station next to it. Dan breaths heavily and looks extremely frightened.]
DANIEL: We have to get off this island. Right now.
[cut to intro]
[Scene opens with Jack checking the tracker on the steadily beeping sat. phone while he and Kate march through the jungle.]
JACK: (breathing heavily) We're catchin' up. The chopper must've landed.
KATE: Why don't you take a break?
[Jack comes to a stop and checks the phone again. Kate unshoulders her pack and removes a water bottle while Jack leans against a tree with one arm. She notices blood on his shirt coming from his wound.]
KATE: You're bleeding.
JACK: No, I'm not bleeding. I'm... I'm suppurating. It's... discharge. My body's just fighting the infection around the stitches.
[Both drink from their water bottles.]
KATE: You know when most people are lying and they can't look you in the eye?
[Jack nods.]
KATE: You do the exact opposite.
[The snap of a twig is heard from the jungle, so Kate and Jack both draw their pistols and aim towards the sound. Miles comes tromping out of the jungle and tosses a stick to the side. When he looks up and sees two guns pointed at him, he skids to a sudden stop.]
MILES: Hey, long time no see.
[The sound of Aaron crying can be heard a moment before Sawyer emerges from the jungle carrying him.]
SAWYER: Hey, who are you talkin' to up there, Genghis?
[Sawyer comes to a stop and the three exchange shocked looks as Kate and Jack lower their guns. Sawyer steps closer and Kate looks at Aaron.]
KATE: Where's Claire?
[After a moment's pause, Sawyer responds in a low voice.]
SAWYER: We lost her.
JACK: You what?
SAWYER: She just walked off in the middle of the night. We looked for her for a day, but she was just gone.
[Jack doubles over, as if in pain.]
SAWYER: I was hopin' maybe she went back to the beach.
JACK: She didn't.
[Aaron cries.]
SAWYER: Well, what are ya'll doin' out here?
[Jack stands upright again; he's still holding the sat. phone.]
SAWYER: What's that phone for?
JACK: The chopper flew over the beach. Someone tossed this out. It must've been Sayid.
SAWYER: Well, you better hope it ain't Sayid... 'cause if he's with those animals that just blew up half of New Otherton, you do not wanna tussle with 'em.
KATE: (shouldering her pack) What, they tried to kill you?
SAWYER: Just like Locke said they would.
[Jack and Sawyer exchange glances.]
JACK: So... what? We're supposed to just... turn around and hide? 'Cause it seems like that didn't work so well for you.
[Aaron starts crying again.]
SAWYER: I'm sorry, Doc, maybe this is déja vu, but didn't you just do the whole "run through the jungle with a walkie" plan?
[The conversation grows more heated.]
JACK: That helicopter is our only way off this island.
SAWYER: What's with you and "gettin' off the island"? You're like a damn broken record!
KATE: Stop it! Are you two fighting each other now?
[Kate carefully takes Aaron from Sawyer's arms. Miles watches in silence.]
JACK: Look... I put Sayid and Desmond on that chopper. It was my call. It's my responsibility. (pause) I'm going after it whether they're on it or not. (pause) Ya'll head back to the beach.
[Jack turns to leave but Kate stops him.]
KATE: Jack... no-no-no... you can't go by yourself!
JACK: Take care of the baby. Okay?
[After a pause to look at each of the group, Jack nods and departs into the jungle. Sawyer shakes his head, then takes off after him.]
SAWYER: (to Kate) That son of a bitch is stubborn.
[Sawyer has his rifle slung over his shoulder and cocks his pistol as he follows Jack.]
SAWYER: (to Jack) Hold up! (sarcastically) You don't get to die alone.
[Scene ends with a shot of Kate holding Aaron.]
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens the same way as the last one ends, with Kate holding Aaron. The view zooms out to reveal the Oceanic 6 seated at a table on a stage in front of a large group of reporters. They are in a large hangar. Behind them is a white wall with a large Oceanic Airlines logo on it with a viewscreen to either side. The viewscreens also have the Oceanic logo on it. An American Flag stands off to one side. From left to right they sit: Sayid, Kate with Aaron, Jack, Hurley, Sun. Miss Decker speaks to the reporters from a podium on the right side of the stage.]
DECKER: Based on the location of the wreckage, our best estimate of the crash site is... here.
[She clicks a remote to bring up a map of the Indonesian Islands on a viewscreen. With a laser pointer, she points at a red X south of the islands labeled "Crash Site".]
DECKER: From there, the survivors were carried by the ocean's current to... here.
[With another click, the image zooms in to give a closer view of the crash site. A small island located close by is labeled "Membata."]
DECKER: An uninhabited island in the Lesser Sunda Islands known as Membata. As you've all read in your briefing books, on day one hundred and three, a typhoon washed up the remnants of an Indonesian fishing boat, including basic supplies and a survival raft. On day one hundred and eight, the remaining six survivors, including Ms. Austen's baby, which she gave birth to on the island of Membata, used this raft to journey here...
[The map displays a red line pointing from Membata to Sumba.]
DECKER: ...an island called Sumba.
[The next click of the map shows a village on the coast of the island.]
DECKER: They then came ashore near a village called Manukangga.
[A photo of the Oceanic 6 coming ashore on a beach is then displayed.]
DECKER: This photo was taken by the local fisherman who found them. Once it was discovered who they were, they were transported to Honolulu by the U.S. Coast Guard.
[A final click brings the Oceanic logo back up on the viewscreens.]
DECKER: As you can imagine, this has been an extraordinarily trying experience. They have, however, agreed to answer a few questions. So, ladies and gentlemen, the survivors of Oceanic 8-1-5.
[A roar of reporters breaks out and the click of many cameras can be heard throughout the hangar. The noise quiets as one reporter stands out.]
MALE REPORTER #1: Dr. Shephard! Can you tell us what it was like when the plane hit the ocean? Uh, how you survived.
JACK: Umm... it... it happened really fast. I remember the impact. I remember the... the plane filling up with water. A group of us got to the emergency door, and, um... got out before it went down.
MALE REPORTER #1: And those of you who survived, you... swam to the island?
JACK: No. We had, uh... cushions. We had some... life jackets. We were in the water for over a day before the current took us in. By then, there was only eight of us left.
[extended version]
MALE REPORTER #1: What happened to the other three?
JACK: One of them, his name is Boone Carlyle, suffered tremendous internal injuries and died a few days after the crash. A woman, Libby, she didn't make it through the first week. Charlie Pace, he... he drowned a few weeks before we were able to leave.
[/extended version]
[The roar of the reporters ensues, until the next one stands out.]
[original version only]
FEMALE REPORTER #1: Over here, please! Considering the ordeal that you've all been through, you look pretty healthy having been on an island for more than a hundred days.
HURLEY: Was that directed at me, dude?
[Quite chuckles are heard from the crowd.]
[/original version only]
FEMALE REPORTER #1: Well actually, Mr. Reyes, you were worth more than one hundred and fifty million dollars at the time of your... death. How does it feel to know you're going to get all that money back?
HURLEY: I don't want it back... any of it.
[Hurley's father is shown amongst the crowd. He looks downhearted at what Hurley has said but then smiles slightly.]
HURLEY: That money was bad luck.
FEMALE REPORTER #2: (asks a question of Sun in Korean)
[Someone from the crowd yells "Can somebody translate that?"]
SUN: She asked if my husband was one of the people who died on the island.
[Sun pauses for a moment before answering. Cameras can be heard clicking pictures.]
SUN: The answer is no. He never made it off the plane.
[extended version]
MALE REPORTER #2: Are you aware of the situation in Iraq, Mr. Jarrah? Do you have any plans to return?
SAYID: There is nothing for me in Iraq.
MALE REPORTER #2: And Mr. Shephard, now that you are home, what are your plans?
JACK: I haven't really thought too much about it, uh... my father died in Sydney, I was bringing him home for the funeral when the plane crashed. Even though the body is... I'd like to put him to rest.
[/extended version]
MALE REPORTER #3: Miss Austen... what was it like giving birth on the island?
KATE: Scary.
MALE REPORTER #3: Your son... uh, Aaron? How old is he now?
KATE: He's just a little over 5 weeks.
MALE REPORTER #3: So that would've made you about six months pregnant when U.S. Marshal service apprehended you in Australia for an outstanding murder warrant. Is that correct?
DECKER: Uh, I'm afraid Ms. Austen's legal issue is off the table.
[Another roar from the crowd of reporters.]
DECKER: Next question.
FEMALE REPORTER #1: Mr. Jarrah, given the amazing circumstances surrounding the survival of you six, is it possible there are any other survivors from the crash yet to be discovered?
SAYID: No. Absolutely not.
[The roar from the crowd and the flash from cameras intensifies to close out the scene.]
[A man holds aside a curtain and behind him the press conference area can be seen. Kate with Aaron and Jack come through first.]
JACK: (to Kate) You did good.
[Sun and Hurley pass through the curtains next, followed by Sayid. Miss Decker comes through the curtains last and they close behind her.]
DECKER: Mr. Jarrah?
[Sayid turns to face her.]
DECKER: There's a woman outside. She says she knows you but she wasn't on the list of family members. (reading from a piece of paper) Her name is a Noor Abed Jaseem.
[Sayid's eyes widen as he looks at Miss Decker, down at the paper, then back up to her. The scene shifts to outside the hangar where a cop is standing next to a police car. A woman stands in front. Sayid exits through a small gap in the large hangar doors, then looks to his right and sees Nadia standing there. After a moment's pause, he slowly closes half the ground that separates them and stops.]
SAYID: Nadia? (pauses, speaking softly) Nadia?
[Sayid begins walking towards her again. Nadia's expression is a cross between a smile and a sob. When he reaches her, he blinks, as if to confirm she is really there. They share an emotional embrace as the scene ends.]
[ISLAND]
[Scene opens with Sayid arriving at the beach on the zodiac raft.]
SAYID: Hey! Over here!
[He jumps out of the raft onto the beach and begins pulling the raft up the sand by a rope attached to it's front. The people from the beach camp can be seen running towards him. Sun arrives first, followed closely by Jin and Juliet and the others close behind.]
SUN: Sayid! Where's Desmond?!
SAYID: He's fine. He's on the freighter. Listen, I'm going to start taking people back six at a time. We have to go right now... before the helicopter gets back to the boat.
JULIET: Why do we have to go to the boat before the chopper gets back?
SAYID: Because the men on that helicopter have every intention of killing us all.
[Juliet looks away in distress.]
SAYID: What?
JULIET: Jack and Kate just went running after it.
[Sayid, Sun and Jin are all shown looking worried as the scene closes.]
[cut to commercial]
[Scene opens with a view of the jungle and mountains in the background. In the foreground, Hurley, Ben and Locke are walking up a grassy hill.]
HURLEY: So when is someone gonna tell me where we're going?
BEN: We're going to a place called the Orchid, Hugo.
HURLEY: And what's that?
BEN: It's a greenhouse.
HURLEY: And why are we going to a greenhouse exactly?
BEN: You heard John. We're going to move the island.
HURLEY: Right. And how are we gonna do that?
BEN: Very carefully.
HURLEY: Well, if you could move the island whenever you wanted, why didn't you just move it before those psychos with guns got here?
BEN: Because doing it is both dangerous and unpredictable. It's a measure of last resort.
HURLEY: Awesome.
[Ben stop to look at some large rocks on the ground. Locke and Hurley slow to a stop and look as well. Ben moves the rocks to reveal a case. After he pulls the case out of a hole in the ground, Locke stops him from opening it by stomping his boot on it. Locke eyes Ben suspiciously.]
LOCKE: Allow me.
[Locke opens the case. Inside are a tin DHARMA lunchbox, a binocular case, a bag and some rope. Locke removes the lunchbox and tosses it to Hurley, who opens it, finds half a sleeve of crackers and starts eating them. Ben looks to Hurley, then back at Locke. Locke removes a small mirror with a string attached to it from the bag.]
BEN: May I have that mirror, please?
[Locke hands the mirror to Ben, who steps away from him and looks to Hurley as he passes him by.]
BEN: You know, those are 15 years old.
[Locke removes the binoculars from the case and stands to take a look around with them. Meanwhile, Ben holds the mirror over his head and uses the sunlight to flash signals with it.]
HURLEY: (still eating the crackers) What are you doing, dude?
BEN: Communicating.
[Ben is looking up to the high mountain ridge line. Locke follows his line of sight and looks up with the binoculars.]
LOCKE: Communicating with who?
[Ben continues to flash signals with the mirror.]
BEN: Who do you think?
[Locke lowers the binoculars from his eyes but continues to look up. A moment later, flashing can be seen in return from the ridge line. Ben takes notice of this and lowers the mirror, while Locke looks again with the binoculars. The view of the ridge line is shown as if looking through the binoculars.]
BEN: Alright, now we can go.
[Ben returns to the case on the ground.]
LOCKE: Wait. What was that? What did you tell them?
BEN: None of your business, John.
[Ben returns the mirror to its bag and places it back in the case, which he then closes and returns to it's hole in the ground. Scene closes with Locke taking another look to the ridge line with the binoculars.]
[At the beach camp.]
[Juliet and Jin are working on the motor of the raft. Charlotte sets a pack inside it. Sun adjusts the rope. The rest of the people from the beach camp arrive with their packs. Dan steps away from the raft to Sayid.]
DANIEL: Hey, Sayid, listen. If you wanna run off into the jungle after the chopper, you should do that. But in the meantime, we need to get these people off this island.
SAYID: I won't be long. If I can catch up with Jack and Kate...
DANIEL: I can start ferrying people now. I can get them there safely. By the time you get back, I can have most of these people on our boat.
[Sayid pauses and looks to Juliet while he considers, then removes a compass from his pocket and hands it to Dan.]
SAYID: I trust you know the bearing. You'd better get going.
DANIEL: Thank you.
[Sayid leaves the group.]
DANIEL: All right, first group in the raft. We can fit six.
JULIET: (to the group) Okay, okay, hold on... Sun's pregnant. (looks to Sun) She should go first.
[Sun smiles at Juliet.]
[Scene switches to Sayid standing at the edge of the jungle. He snaps the clip into his pistol. Behind him, Kate exits the jungle carrying Aaron. She is followed by Miles.]
KATE: Sayid? What are you doing here? Jack thought that you...
SAYID: I know what he thought. That's why I'm going after him. How far ahead is he?
KATE: I don't know. He's... he's with Sawyer. I left them about an hour ago. Jack's got his sat. phone and they're headed for the helicopter. I can track them.
[Sayid takes pause, looking hesitant.]
KATE: Look, you are not gonna catch up to them unless I go with you.
SAYID: Then let's go.
KATE: (nodding) Okay.
[Kate turns and goes to Sun.]
KATE: Sun.
SUN: Where's Claire?
[Kate hands Aaron to a confused looking Sun.]
KATE: Get Aaron on the boat, okay?
SUN: What?
KATE: I'm sorry. Just... I'll see you there.
[Kate yells back while her and Sayid run off into the jungle.]
KATE: Just keep him safe!
[Aaron makes a slight crying noise and Sun comforts him as Jin looks at her and the baby.]
DANIEL: All right, this is just the first trip. Here we go.
[Dan and the others lift the raft and carry it down to the water. Dan waves back to Charlotte. Once out in the water, they all climb in the raft. Juliet, Charlotte, Miles and a few others watch them depart. Sun with Aaron, Jin and three redshirts are on board. Dan, in the back, starts the motor and gets them going. Sun looks down at Aaron in her arms, then up to Jin.]
JIN: (in Korean) I told you I'd get you off the island.
[Scene closes with Sun smiling back at him as they ride along in the raft.]
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with Sun ascending a staircase. A closeup view of her stomach reveals her pregnancy has steadily moved along. She passes a large Paik sign on the wall. The staircase makes a left hand turn and she pauses to look up. The staircase is large and covered with scattered rays of sunlight and shadows. A large glass window overlooks it. She continues her ascension.]
[Scene switches to Mr. Paik in his office at the top of the stairs. He is berating two of his advisers.]
PAIK: (in Korean) How could this happen?!
ADVISER: (in Korean) Whoever did it, sir... used five different banks.
PAIK: (in Korean) Get Yoon up here right now! NOW!
[The two advisers bow and depart as Sun enters the office.]
SUN: (in Korean) Hello, Father. I hope I'm not interrupting.
PAIK: (in Korean) No... It's just business.
[Mr. Paik, who was standing in front of his desk, goes around the side and takes a seat behind it.]
SUN: (in Korean) Is something wrong?
PAIK: (in Korean) Just some complications with the company. Nothing you'd understand. (pause) How is the pregnancy?
[Sun pauses to look down, then starts speaking in a more serious tone. She looks back up at her father.]
SUN: (in Korean) Don't pretend to be interested in my baby. We both know you hated my husband.
PAIK: (in Korean) What did you say?
SUN: (in Korean) You heard me. You hated Jin.
[Mr. Paik, indignant, rises to his feet.]
PAIK: (in Korean) Who do you think you are? I am your father. You will respect me!
SUN: (in Korean) Oceanic paid us our settlement for the crash. It was very significant. (pause) This morning, I bought a controlling interest in your company.
[Mr. Paik is completely shocked by the news.]
SUN: (in Korean) So you will now respect me.
PAIK: (in Korean) Why... would you do this?
[Sun yells in response.]
SUN: (in Korean) You ruined my husband's life. (pause) It is because of you we were on that plane. (pause) Two people are responsible for his death. You are one of them.
[Mr. Paik slowly takes his seat. Sun continues in a calm and calculating voice.]
SUN: (in Korean) I am going to have my baby. And then we shall discuss the plans for the future of the company. (pause) Our company.
[Mr. Paik's face is distorted with anger and confusion while Sun continues to stare him down.]
[cut to commercial]
[An old car sputters and backfires as it comes to a stop in front of a nice house. The door opens and out steps Hurley carrying a large bag from the Mr. Cluck's Chicken Shack. He approaches the front door, which is slightly ajar. The car backfires one more time. Hurley slowly opens the door and cautiously steps inside.]
HURLEY: Mom? Dad?
[It is a nicely furnished but empty home. The door closes behind him.]
HURLEY: Mr. Tranh? Lady Tranh?
[As he steps forward, he kicks a coconut on the floor. After a pause to look around suspiciously, he picks the coconut up to examine it. Upon hearing whispers, he sets the coconut down and steps into a side bedroom.]
HURLEY: Hello... ??
[The whispers continue and appear to be coming from outside a double door in the bedroom, so Hurley sets down the bag and picks up a bronze statue of Jesus off the dresser. He slowly moves towards the door.]
HURLEY: (muttering to self) Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this? Why am I doing this?
[Hurley suddenly pushes the doors open and raises the statue as a weapon. To his shock, his mother, father and a large group of people stand outside awaiting him.]
CROWD: Surprise!! Happy birthday!!
CARMEN: Happy birthday!
DAVID: Happy birthday, Hugo!
[The crowd applauds as Hurley continues standing frozen with the statue raised over his shoulder. His mom steps closer to him.]
CARMEN: Hugo, what are you doing with that?
HURLEY: I don't know. I thought there might be a... prowler or something.
[Hurley hands the statue to his mother.]
CARMEN: Jesus Christ is not a weapon. Okay. Enjoy your party.
[Hurley joins the party, the crowd applauds and Hawai'ian music starts playing. The view pans the crowd and shows everyone socializing and having a good time. Hurley has gotten himself a drink in a coconut with a little umbrella in it. He spots Kate holding Aaron and approaches them. Kate sees him and smiles.]
KATE: Happy birthday, Hurley.
[They share a kiss on the cheek.]
HURLEY: Hey Kate.
KATE: Hey.
HURLEY: (to Aaron) Hey, little buddy.
KATE: (to Aaron) Say hi. (to Hurley) Jack's running late. Sorry.
[Hurley hears a voice from behind him.]
NADIA: Happy birthday, Hugo!
[Hurley turns to see Nadia and Sayid standing there.]
HURLEY: Wow! You guys are here!
[Hurley gets a hug first from Nadia, then from Sayid.]
SAYID: Interesting choice of theme.
HURLEY: Yeah... Mom... (smiling) really doesn't get it, dude.
[Hurley's father approaches the group.]
DAVID: (good naturedly) Hey! How's everybody doing? (chuckles) What are you talking about? Building a fire or... huntin' boars? (chuckles) I... guess not. Uh, listen. Uh, do you mind, uh, excusin' us for a little while? I-I wanna show you your birthday present. Hmm? Come on. (to Kate) Bye-bye now.
[Scene shifts to the front of the house. Hurley and his dad are standing in the driveway in front of the closed garage door.]
HURLEY: I told you I don't want anything.
DAVID: Hugo, it's your birthday. You gotta get somethin'.
HURLEY: Not with the money. I don't want anything from the money.
DAVID: Relax. I got this before you gave us the money.
[David clicks the garage door remote and the door rises, revealing the old camaro, now completely restored.]
DAVID: Ta-da! Check it out.
[As the door finishes opening, Hurley stares at the car. He slowly speaks again.]
HURLEY: You fixed it.
DAVID: Yeah. After the crash, I... I worked on it as a memorial to you. When I was fixin' it up, it was almost like I was with ya. But now you're back... and it's all yours.
[David removes a keychain from his pocket and jangles the key in front of Hurley.]
DAVID: Wanna take her for a little spin?
[Hurley grins and snatches the key from him. After they both takes their seats in the car, Hurley puts the key in the ignition, then freezes in fear. He is staring down at the numbers on the dash. The main odometer reads 481516 and the trip odometer reads 2342.]
DAVID: Something wrong, Son?
HURLEY: (quietly) Is this some kind of joke?
DAVID: What are you talking about?
HURLEY: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. Did you do this?
DAVID: Do what?
[Hurley's agitation level is rising fast.]
HURLEY: Those are the numbers! Right there! The numbers I won the lottery with!
DAVID: Wow. What... what a coincidence.
HURLEY: No! No, not a coincidence! I don't want this! (as he exits the car) I don't want any of it!
DAVID: Hugo? Wait... wait a... Hugo, what are you... Son! Hey!
[David gets out of the car and hurries out to the street and watches as Hurley runs away.]
DAVID: Hugo! Hugo! Hugo, where you goin'? Come on! Hugo!
[Scene ends with Hurley running as fast as he can down the street and away from those numbers.]
[ISLAND]
[In the jungle.]
[Ben is leading Locke and Hurley to the Orchid.]
HURLEY: Okay... let's say this greenhouse place does what you say... and yeah, I get it, it's really dangerous and unpredictable. But suppose, somehow, it works... and we move the island. Doesn't that mean the dudes with guns move, too?
BEN: Yes, I suppose they would.
HURLEY: Well, isn't that, you know, a problem?
BEN: I'm working on it.
HURLEY: Well, what about me? I still wanna get off it!
LOCKE: I'm afraid it's a little late for that, Hugo.
[Ben comes to a stop and eyes a partially overgrown structure through the jungle off in the distance. He sets his rifle on the ground and kneels.]
BEN: May I have the binoculars, please?
[Locke unshoulders his pack but before he can get the binoculars, he is interrupted by Ben.]
BEN: You might wanna get down lower to the ground.
LOCKE: And why might we wanna do that?
BEN: Because we're at the Orchid.
[Hurley and Locke both lower and kneel behind Ben. Locke continues shuffling through his bag until he produces the binoculars, which he then hands to Ben. Ben takes them and surveys the scene. Locke checks the clip on his pistol and puts it in the back of his pants.]
LOCKE: What are we waiting for?
BEN: We're waiting, John, because Charles Widmore, the man who's trying to capture me and kill all the rest of you, knows about this place and knows that what we need is inside.
[Locke sighs and rubs his face.]
LOCKE: I thought you said you had no idea why he was trying to find he island.
BEN: I wasn't being entirely truthful.
LOCKE: Yeah... when are you ever "entirely truthful"...
BEN: You need to see this.
[Ben hands the binoculars back to Locke, who uses them to scan the greenhouse.]
LOCKE: What am I looking for?
BEN: Look over there on the left-hand side. Watch the plants at the back.
LOCKE: I don't see any...
[He stops scanning when his view comes across one of the mercs patrolling the area in the greenhouse.]
BEN: (dreadful) They're already here.
[cut to commercial]
[Scene opens with the people on the zodiac raft. Sun and Jin look at each other and share a smile as they near the freighter. Dan raises an arm and yells.]
DANIEL: Hey, hey!
[Desmond and a few others run onto the deck of the freighter and look towards the raft.]
DANIEL: Hey! We're back!
[Desmond and another toss the rope ladder over the edge of the deck. As the raft arrives at the freighter, Jin tosses the rope attached to the front to Desmond, who hands it to the guy next to him for holding. Desmond begins helping people off the raft.]
DESMOND: Where's Sayid?
DANIEL: He had to go after Jack. (to Sun) You go. (to Desmond) They're headed for the chopper.
[Desmond helps Sun, holding Aaron still, up the ladder and onto the freighter.]
DESMOND: You okay?
SUN: Yes, I'm fine. Thank you.
[Desmond helps the others off the raft, Jin last. Dan remains on the raft.]
DANIEL: I'm gonna head back for the next group.
[Dan revs the motor and turns the raft to head back to the island. He and Desmond share a wave as he departs. Michael's voice is heard from off screen.]
MICHAEL: Engine's fixed. Tell Hendricks to try it.
[Desmond goes to talk to Hendricks, leaving Sun and Jin staring in shock at Michael standing a few feet away on the deck.]
[Scene switches to the control room where Hendricks is studying a chart. Desmond rushes in the door.]
DESMOND: Okay, engine should be working.
[Hendricks goes over to the main panels, flips a few switches and the motor rumbles to life.]
HENDRICKS: Indeed they are.
[They share a grin and a laugh of relief.]
DESMOND: All right, well... take us to the island.
[Hendricks pushes a lever and the rumble of the engines grows louder.]
DESMOND: But make sure you... you stay on the bearing of 3-0-5. It's gotta be exactly 3-0-5.
[Hendricks turns a knob and the number on the screen dials up to 305. A static noise can now be heard.]
HENDRICKS: We've got some kind of RF interference with the the fathometer.
[Hendricks looks up to a fuzzy monitor.]
HENDRICKS: I can't see the reef, mate.
DESMOND: RF interference? How is that possible? The radio room's down.
HENDRICKS: I don't know, but something on this boat is broadcasting. If we don't turn it off, I'm not going any closer than 5 miles off the coast.
DESMOND: Then I'll find it.
[Desmond rushes out the door as Hendricks powers down the engines.]
[In the jungle.]
[Sawyer and Jack continue to track the chopper to the steady beep of the sat. phone. Sawyer comments on Jack's wound.]
SAWYER: Cut yourself shavin'?
JACK: Juliet took out my appendix a couple of days ago.
SAWYER: You kiddin' me.
JACK: Nope.
SAWYER: Well, what else did I miss...
[Sawyer and Jack come to a halt as Jack checks the tracker on the sat. phone. They appear to be close to their mark and look around for the chopper. A loud clanking noise is heard and they towards it to find what they are looking for.]
JACK: We're here.
[They approach cautiously as the clanking sounds continue. Sawyer flanks to the left and Jack to the right. Both hide from view. After seeing none of the mercs in the area, Jack calls out.]
JACK: Lapidus!
[An interior view of the chopper reveals Lapidus handcuffed to the back seat of the chopper. He slides a box aside and calls back.]
FRANK: Yeah!
[Upon hearing Frank's voice, Jack approaches the chopper. Sawyer follows suit.]
SAWYER: You know this yahoo?
FRANK: Yahoo?! This yahoo dropped that phone on you guys so you could find me... and I could fly you outta here. So why don't you do me a favor and get that back compartment? There's a toolbox. See if you can find something to get me outta these things. (rattles cuffs)
JACK: You heard the man.
SAWYER: Well, all right. Can I get you boys a nice, cold glass of lemonade while I'm back there?
JACK: Where are Desmond and Sayid?
FRANK: Your buddies were smart enough to keep their asses on the boat because right now that's the safest place to be.
[Sawyer slams the toolbox down in front of Frank.]
FRANK: Because when the boys that I brought over here come stompin' out of this jungle, you're gonna wanna be long gone.
JACK: Where'd they go?
FRANK: They're up by some greenhouse, perched up there waitin' to snatch Linus.
JACK: Soon as we cut you free, you'll be able fly us out of here?
FRANK: Hell yeah.
SAWYER: Hang on, Shaggy. You said the hit squad's gonna grab Ben Linus?
FRANK: Well, I don't see what's gonna stop 'em.
SAWYER: What are they gonna do with the people that are with 'em?
FRANK: Nothin' good.
SAWYER: (to Jack) Hugo's with Ben.
[Jack pauses, then let's out a heavy sigh.]
JACK: Son of a bitch!
[FLASHFORWARD]
[Scene opens with a closeup view of a picture of Christian Shephard. The view pans to Jack standing behind a podium and speaking.]
JACK: About ten months ago, I wrote what I wanted to say at my father's funeral on the back of a cocktail napkin at the Sydney airport.
[Jack pauses and the view shifts to show a large audience in front of him seated along two rows of pews in a church. He continues.]
JACK: I don't remember what I wrote, but whatever it was... he woulda hated it.
[Light laughter from the crowd. Seated in the front row to his right is Kate with Aaron, Hurley, Sayid and Nadia.]
JACK: My father couldn't stand eulogies. "The only good thing about a wake is the free booze", he'd say.
[More laughter from the crowd.]
JACK: Not much of a wake because I won't even be able to bury him.
[Jack pauses to look over at the picture of his dad. His mother can be seen sitting in the crowd.]
JACK: So... what I wanna say is not for my father. It's for me. (pause) Good-bye, Dad. (pause) I loved you. (pause) I miss you.
[Scene changes to Jack and Margo thanking people as they exit the church. Jack then turns to his mother.]
MARGO: I'll see you back at the house?
JACK: Yeah.
[They hug each other in consolation.]
MARGO: I love you, sweetheart.
JACK: I love you, Mom.
[They release from the hug and look at each other once again.]
MARGO: (whispering) I'm so glad you're home.
JACK: I'll see you soon.
MARGO: Okay.
[Jack watches out the door at his mother departing, then turns back into the church and approaches Kate.]
KATE: You did that well.
JACK: Had a lot of practice.
[Aaron cries out gently. Carole Littleton approaches Jack and clears her throat to be noticed. Jack and Kate turn to look at her.]
CAROLE: (to Jack) Excuse me. May I have a word with you?
[Kate takes Aaron and steps off to the side out of hearing range.]
CAROLE: Mr. Shephard... I'm very sorry for your loss.
JACK: Thank you. (nods) How did you know my father?
CAROLE: I believe I'm the reason he was in Australia when he died.
JACK: I'm sorry. I don't understand. Why would he have come to see you?
CAROLE: Oh, he... he didn't come to see me. I was still in the hospital. I never saw him. (pause) He came to see his daughter. (pause) My daughter, Mr. Shephard.
[Jack looks confused.]
JACK: My father didn't have a daughter...
CAROLE: Yes. He did. If you don't believe me, check his phone records. Would you like to know the... the strangest thing about all this, Mr. Shephard? My daughter was on your plane, too. She was on flight 8-1-5.
[Carole begins to steadily cry as she continues speaking.]
CAROLE: You were in the air for six hours... probably just a few rows from her... and you never even knew she was your sister. She was one of the ones who died when your plane hit the water. Her name was... Claire.
[Jack looks like he has been punched in the gut with the realization of who his sister is.]
CAROLE: I didn't mean to burden you with this, but... you needed to know. I'm... sorry for your loss.
[Jack is stunned. He can do no more than rub his forehead. Carole takes her leave of him and stops by Kate on her way out, not knowing the baby in Kate's arms is her grandson.]
CAROLE: Your son is beautiful.
KATE: Thank you.
[Carole departs and Jack turns to look at Kate and Aaron. The scene ends as it dawns on him that he is looking at his nephew.]
[cut to commercial]
[ISLAND]
[On the freighter.]
[Sun with Aaron and Jin are standing with Michael on the deck of the freighter while men do various work around them.]
SUN: I don't understand. How'd you get back to New York?
MICHAEL: Oh, Walt and I, uh, uh... we took Ben's boat and we followed his bearing. A couple of days, we came to an island, you know, with people. I sold the boat... we hopped a cargo ferry back to the States. (pause) Didn't tell anybody who we were.
SUN: And now you're working for Ben...
MICHAEL: I do not work for Ben. I'm trying to make up for what I did. I'm... trying to help you out here. (looks toward Jin) Translate what I said.
JIN: I understand.
[Desmond emerges from a freighter door and yells urgently.]
DESMOND: Hey! Michael! I need you now!
[Desmond turns and reenters the inside of the freighter. Michael, Sun and Jin follow.]
[Scene switches to a room inside the freighter and Desmond enters through the doorway followed closely by Michael.]
MICHAEL: Oh, my God.
[Sun with Aaron and Jin enter the room behind them. They all look at a very large pile of C-4 explosives wired and ready to go.]
JIN: (says something to Sun in Korean, then in English) Now.
[Sun takes the baby and leaves the men alone in the room with the explosives. The three exchange nervous glances.]
[In the jungle.]
[Kate and Sayid are rushing through the jungle. They come to a stop in a clearing as Kate studies the ground around her.]
SAYID: What's the matter?
KATE: These aren't Jack or Sawyer. They're different tracks, fresh... and they're doubling back behind us.
[They look around nervously and Kate takes aim at the jungle.]
SAYID: Whoever you are, come out now!
[Steps can be heard, then a voice. Richard Alpert emerges from the jungle with his arms raised.]
RICHARD: All right. All right, let's just relax.
[Kate and Sayid are both pointing their guns at him now.]
RICHARD: All right, let's-let's just...
KATE: Stop!
RICHARD: Let's relax.
KATE: Stop!
RICHARD: Just relax. Put the guns down.
KATE: I said stop right there!
RICHARD: Please just drop your guns.
SAYID: Take one more step...
[The sound of many guns being cocked can be heard around the clearing. They are surrounded by a group of Others.]
RICHARD: I said drop your guns.
[Alpert retrieves first Kate's, then Sayid's gun.]
[At the Orchid.]
[With a view through the binoculars, the mercs can be seen at the greenhouse.]
LOCKE: I see two of them... (lowers the binoculars) but not the one who killed Alex.
BEN: He's there.
[Ben retracts his collapsible baton and hands it to Locke.]
BEN: Hold on to that for me, will you?
LOCKE: What?
BEN: Listen to me very carefully, John, because I'm not gonna have time to repeat this.
[Hurley is looking at the greenhouse through the binoculars now as Locke listens closely.]
BEN: You're gonna go into that greenhouse through that hole there. Once inside, you're gonna turn left. Go about 20 paces until you see a patch of anthuriums on your left. They're in an alcove against the north wall. Face that wall, reach down with your left hand. You'll find a switch that activates the elevator. The elevator takes you down to the actual Orchid station.
HURLEY: (lowers binoculars) Whoa... wait, what?
LOCKE: Okay, I'm sorry, Ben, but maybe I missed the part where you explained what I'm supposed to do about the armed men inside.
BEN: I'm gonna take care of them.
LOCKE: And how the hell are you gonna do that?
[Ben turns and glares at Locke with a look that says, "Are you stupid?"]
BEN: How many times do I have to tell you, John? I always have a plan.
[Ben rises and starts making his way towards the greenhouse and the mercs awaiting him there. Locke calls out but does not follow.]
LOCKE: Ben... Ben!
[Ben walks slowly through the jungle. Scene switches to the freighter, where Sun walks out onto the deck with Aaron and looks back to the door she just exited. She looks down at Aaron, then back at the door. Scene switches to Sawyer and Jack departing the chopper in search of Hurley. Scene switches to Kate and Sayid being led through the jungle by Richard and the Others. Scene switches to Locke and Hurley still kneeling and looking towards the greenhouse. Finally, scene switches back to Ben, who is approaching the greenhouse with arms raised. Guns can be heard cocking and Ben is approached by mercs with their guns aimed at him. Keamy steps out and slowly walks up to face Ben.]
BEN: My name is Benjamin Linus. I believe you are looking for me.
[Keamy looks to Omar, then back to Ben. He raises his pistol and aims it directly at Ben's forehead. With a smug grin, he pistol whips Ben across the head.]
