Episode 11 – Cabin Fever
Written by Elisabeth Sarnoff and Kyle Pennington
Directed by Paul Edwards
[The episode opens with a young, blonde, girl turning on an old phonograph and putting the arm on a 45-RPM record. It is sometime in the late 1950’s. As the record starts to play we hear the song “Everyday” by Buddy Holly. The girl is dancing about her bedroom wearing a green poodle style skirt and a white blouse. Her hair is pulled back in a ponytail with a scarf. She stops in front of a lowboy vanity, looks in the mirror, applies more red lipstick and continues dancing. As we watch her dance, we hear the following verse from the start of the song. When her mother enters the room the song still plays in the background.]
Everyday it's a-gettin' closer
Goin' faster than a roller coaster
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey
Everyday it's a-gettin' faster
Everyone said, go ahead and ask her
Love like yours will surely come my way
A-hey, a-hey-hey
Everyday seems a little longer
Every way love's a little stronger
Come what may
Do you ever long for, true love from………. [fades]
[Her mother interrupts her dancing.]
MRS. LOCKE: Where do you think you are going?
EMILY: (smugly) Out.
MRS. LOCKE:With who? (pauses) Him?
EMILY: (smugly) Yes and you can’t stop me. I’m in love.
[As her mother stands with her arms crossed in front of her chest, Emily continues to prepare to go out. She picks up her purse and red sweater and defiantly walks passed her mother.]
MRS. LOCKE: He’s twice your age Emily.
EMILY: (sarcastically) So what mom! Are you jealous?
MRS. LOCKE: Emily wait a minute. Emily listen to me!
[Mrs. Locke starts running after Emily following her out the front door. It is raining heavily. Thunder is rumbling.]
MRS. LOCKE: (yelling) Emily! Get back here young lady! Right now!
[Emily runs away from the house with her red sweater over her head. She turns her head to look back at her mother.]
EMILY: (yelling) You can’t stop me! I love him!
[A car is coming down the street. Emily is still looking at her mother and does not notice the car. The driver of the car is blaring the horn of the car.]
MRS. LOCKE: Emily! Emily! NO!
EMILY: AAAACK!
[Brakes are screeching. The car hits Emily. ]
[Switch to a corridor with overhead florescent lighting. There is a loud rattling noise coming from the wheels of the gurney. A doctor is raising an eyelid and moving a small flashlight across her eyes. Emily has bruises on her forehead. A nurse is holding her hand while slightly bent over her. She is talking to Emily who is semi-conscious. As she regains consciousness.]
NURSE: Honey? Honey, can you hear me? Honey, can you hear me? That's good. Try and stay awake now.
DOCTOR: Keep it steady. Out of the way. Pulse! Must be internal. Transfusion! She's bleeding. Her heartbeat's dropping fast.
EMILY: I’m pregnant.
NURSE: What? What did you say?
EMILY: I'm pregnant. I'm five, I'm almost six months.
NURSE: She, she’s pregnant.
[Fast switch to the delivery room. Emily is in labor. She is experiencing a lot of pain and is yelling as she pushes.]
DOCTOR: Get the clamps ready.
NURSE: That's it, Emily. Good girl.
DOCTOR: Baby's crowning.
NURSE: She’s crowning.
DOCTOR: Dilated and ready to go.
NURSE: That’s it, good, good.
[We hear a baby crying. An incubator is being wheeled into the delivery room. The nurse is now handing Emily’s baby off to another nurse. The baby is put in the incubator. Emily’s face is bruised all over. She slowly regains consciousness. Everything is a bit fuzzy.]
NURSE: Okay sweetheart. Alright. There you go.
NURSE: (to baby) Wrap you up nice and warm. We'll just take you over here now. Margaret, would you put him in for me, please?
EMILY: My baby?
NURSE: It's a boy, honey. He's okay for now. He's just real early.
EMILY: Can I hold him?
NURSE: I'm sorry, sweetheart. He's just too little. We have to take him away now.
EMILY: (stuttering) But, name, name him John. Please! His name is John!
[Switch to jungle on the island. Locke is walking and carrying a torch. Hurley and Ben are following. They are looking for Jacob’s cabin.]
HURLEY: Who builds a cabin in the middle of the jungle anyway?
LOCKE: That's a good question.
HURLEY: So? How about answering it?
LOCKE: I don't know.
HURLEY: And why are we even going there?
LOCKE: Because hopefully, the man who lives in the cabin can tell us what to about the people who are trying to kill us.
HURLEY:We've been walking all day. Are we gonna get there soon?
LOCKE: (to Ben) How long?
BEN: (point to Hurley) I don't know. I've been following him.
LOCKE: (to Ben) What? What do you mean, you've been following him?
HURLEY: I'm not even in front.
BEN: I have no idea where the cabin is. Hugo's the last one who saw it.
[The 3 men stop walking and stand in a small circle conversing.]
HURLEY: Oh, this is just awesome.
BEN: (sarcastically) What do you think we should do, John?
LOCKE: (pausing) We're making camp.
[Ben walks between and passes Locke and Hurley who are face to face.]
HURLEY: What? Here in the dark with the monster and, him?
LOCKE: Well, the rest will do us good.
HURLEY: Dude, what's gonna happen when those freighter guys come back?
LOCKE: I don't know, yet.
[Locke pats Hurley on the shoulder while Hurley looks at him bewildered.]
[Switch to the whirring sound of chopper rotors. It is headed for the freighter. It is nighttime. We see Desmond asleep in a cot on top of the blankets. There are several open cans, and a can opener, on a table next to the cot. Sayid is wakened by the chopper, gets up. He is trying to rouse Desmond from his sleep.]
SAYID: Desmond. The helicopter's here.
[The chopper has landed on the freighter and the rotors coming to a stop. Desmond has wakened and gets up from the cot. Desmond follows Sayid as they walk down a corridor and come out onto the deck of the freighter. Doc Ray is examining a mercenary who was attacked by the Smoke monster in Episode 10. ]
DOC RAY: All right, get him on the litter. Careful!
KEAMY: (to several mercenaries) Get him down over there. Be careful. Okay guys, unload it. Come on. Pick it up, pick it up. Let's go!
[Frank exits the chopper and slowly shuts the door. He looks on as Keamy and Doc Ray talk about the injured mercenary.]
DOC RAY: What did this to him?
KEAMY: (looking down at his team member) A black pillar of smoke threw him 50 feet in the air, ripped his guts out.
DOC RAY: What?
[Keamy is angry and approaches Sayid.]
KEAMY: I need you to tell me exactly how many people are on that island, and where every single one of them is.
SAYID: And why would I do that?
GAULT: Keamy! What the hell do you think you're doing, mate?
[As Captain Gault approaches the group on the deck. Keamy walks to meet him and pulls out his gun and pushes it under the captain’s jaw.]
KEAMY: You gave me up.
GAULT: What?
KEAMY: Linus knew who I was. He knew my name. He knew everything about me.
GAULT: No, I'm not the one who gave you up.
KEAMY: Then who did?
[Sayid bows his head knowing what is about to happen. The sound of a hatch door closing is heard. Gault and Keamy go down a corridor of the freighter. They go to a room where Michael is sitting on the edge of a cot with his right leg bent underneath. He is shackled to pipes. Keamy enters first, then Gault. Keamy kicks the cot out and it pins Michael’s leg. Michael is now on the floor. Keamy is glaring at Michael]
MICHAEL: Aaaaaaaaaahhh! Oooooooooooooohhhhhhh!
[Keamy presses down on the cot crushing Michael’s leg. We hear sound of bones cracking and Michael wailing in pain.]
KEAMY: Do you know who I am?
MICHAEL: (taking a deep breath) What?
[Keamy presses down again on the cot.]
KEAMY: My name. Do you know my name?
MICHAEL: Keamy. Martin Keamy.
KEAMY: Did you give it to him?
MICHAEL: Who?
KEAMY: Benjamin Linus--did you give him my name?
MICHAEL: Yeah.
[Keamy cocks his gun then aims it at Michael’s forehead.]
GAULT: Wait. Wait! Martin, no!
[Keamy pulls the trigger and Michael cowers. All we hear is CLICK. Keamy tries 3 times to shoot Michael. All 3 times the gun fails to shoot. Keamy pulls out the magazine and checks the gun and the bullets. He does not understand why the gun misfired.]
GAULT: Martin, we need him. He's the only one who can fix the engines.
KEAMY: And what makes you so sure about that?
GAULT: Because he's the one who broke them.
[Keamy looks at Michael then knocks him out with one back fisted punch.]
[Switch to an open eye. It is Locke’s as he awakens from sleeping in the jungle. There is a small plume of smoke from the campfire. Hurley and Ben are still asleep. We hear someone grunting and chopping. The sequence continues 17 times.. Locke gets up and walks toward the noise. He encounters Horace who is now pushing down the tree he was chopping.]
HORACE: Hello there.
LOCKE: Who are you?
HORACE: I'm Horace. Whew!
LOCKE: And what are you doing out here?
HORACE: Oh, building a place. A little getaway for me and the missus. No, I mean, sometimes you need a break from the D.I., y'know? The Dharma Initiative? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha! I'm not making any sense, am I?
LOCKE: No.
HORACE: That's probably because I've been dead for 12 years.
[Horace now has a bloody nose. He has been chopping while talking with Locke. He turns and pushes down the same tree he just chopped down. Locke looks and the tree is back again. He is both amazed and confused. Horace is now chopping the same tree again.]
HORACE: Hello there. You gotta find me, John. You gotta find me. And when you do, you'll find him.
LOCKE: Who?
HORACE: Jacob.
[Locke looks in bewilderment. He is not sure if a joke is being played on him.]
HORACE: He's been waiting for you a real long time, man. I'm Horace.
[Horace is still chopping the same tree. Ugh, chop, ugh, chop, ugh, chop.
HORACE: Godspeed, John,
[Switch to eyeball again. Locke wakes up and Ben, sitting on a log, is staring at him with a smirk on his face. We hear bird chirping. Locke walks over to Hurley who is still sleeping. He tries shaking him a bit to wake him up.]
LOCKE: Hugo?
HURLEY: (dream state) Mallomars.
LOCKE: Wake up, Hugo.
HURLEY: Hmm? Huh? What?
LOCKE: Time to get up. We're gonna get going.
HURLEY: I thought we didn't know where we're going, dude.
LOCKE: We do now.
HURLEY: Hmm?
BEN: (nodding to Locke) I used to have dreams.
[Switch back to the hospital. We see baby John Locke in an incubator. Mrs. Locke is standing with her arms crossed in front of her chest. She looks perturbed. Emily is standing next to her. She is very nervous. They are both looking at the baby. There is a female voice, in the background, coming over the public address speaker.]
P.A Voice: Dr. Miller. Dr. Miller, please call the switchboard.
[The door to the room opens. The nurse who helped when Emily was brought to the hospital walks in.]
NURSE: Hi Emily. Mrs. Locke it is good to see you.
MRS. LOCKE: How is he?
NURSE: He's amazing. He's the youngest preemie to ever survive in this hospital. He's had infections, pneumonia, you name it. And every time, he knocked them out. He is a fighter, your little John.
MRS. LOCKE: (sarcastically) That’s wonderful. (she looks at her wristwatch).
NURSE: The other girls say he's a miracle baby, and today, we're gonna take him out of the incubator so you can hold him for the very first time.
[Emily is distraught. She looks at her mom who glares back at her. She starts sobbing.]
EMILY: I can’t do this. I, I’m sorry I can’t.
[Emily turns and runs out of the room. She is now crying. Mrs. Locke looks at her watch again, shakes her head then takes a cigarette from her purse and starts to bring it to her lips.]
MRS. LOCKE: So who do I talk to about adoption?
NURSE: You can't smoke in here, Mrs. Locke.
MRS. LOCKE: Oh. Of course. I'm sorry.
[Mrs. Locke shuts her lighter and returns it to her purse. Through a window from the corridor to the room, a man watches. It is Richard Alpert. Mrs. Locke looks stunned. She recognizes him.]
NURSE: Is that the father?
MRS. LOCKE: I, uh, I don't know who that is.
[Richard smiles, a nod then walks away. Switch back to the jungle. Locke is using a machete to clear brush, making a path for Hurley, Ben and himself.]
HURLEY: Can I ask you somethin'?
LOCKE: Sure.
HURLEY: Why am I here, man?
LOCKE: You're here because you can see the cabin, and that makes you special.
HURLEY: Well, I have a theory as to why we're the only ones who can see it.
LOCKE: I'd love to hear it.
HURLEY: I think we can see it 'cause we're the craziest. So how'd you figure out where it was, dude?
LOCKE: I didn't. We're not going to the cabin. We're gonna make a pit stop first.
HURLEY: Pit stop? Where?
[Locke stops and takes off his backpack. Ben is surprised at what Locke is about to do.]
LOCKE: You ever wonder what happened to the Dharma Initiative, Hugo? There must have been at least a hundred of 'em living on this island--manning the stations, building those homes, making all that ranch dressing that you like. And then one day, they're all gone. They just disappeared. You want to know where we're going? We're going to see them.
[Hurley and Locke come to the edge of a pit. The pit holds all the remains of the DI members who were killed in the purge. One skull has a bullet hole in it. Ben is getting uncomfortable. Hurley is amazed.]
HURLEY: Whoa. What happened to 'em?
LOCKE: (nodding his head toward Ben) He did.
[Switch to a young blonde headed boy setting up a backgammon game with white and red pieces. A slightly older blonde headed girl is looking out the window. It is raining heavily. There is thunder also. The little boy is John Locke. We hear a man and woman outside. The woman is Florence, John’s foster mother and the man is Richard Alpert. He is wearing a suit with a red tie and carrying a messenger’s cloth bag. The girl is Melissa, Florence’s daughter.]
MELISSA: (to John) That game is stupid.
[Melissa walks over to the table John is sitting at and upends the board. Pieces go flying in all directions. John picks everything up and re-sets the game pieces.]
Florence: Hello! He’s right in here. Come in.
[Florence enters the house carrying a small boy. Richard Alpert follows her and closes the door. She gives the boy to Melissa.]
FLORENCE: Melissa! Stop that! Go on now. Take your brother in the kitchen. There’s someone here who wants to see John.
RICHARD ALPERT: It is coming down like cats and dogs out there.
FLORENCE: (to John) This nice gentleman wants to talk to you, John. So I want you on your best behavior. Understand?
FLORENCE: (to Richard) He's all yours.
[Young John nods yes. Richard puts his coat, hat and bag on a piano bench. He takes a seat at the child’s table that John is sitting at. He listens to Richard and responds mostly with nods of his head.]
RICHARD ALPERT: You like backgammon? Yeah? You seem to have a pretty good sense of the game. I'm Richard, John. I run a school for kids who are, extremely special, and I have reason to believe that you might be one them. Mind if I show you a couple of really neat things?
[John stops and looks at Richard. He nods yes. Richard walks over to a wall where there are pictures drawn by children. One picture catches his eye and he concentrates on it for a moment. It is a tight spiral going up in the air ending in a cloud of black smoke. There is a stick man lying on the ground underneath the smoke. There is still cracking of thunder outside.]
RICHARD ALPERT: Did you draw that, John?
[John nods yes. He walks back to the sofa and John sits next to him. Richard opens his bag and starts to take objects out and places them out on the coffee table.. There is baseball glove, a book with a faded cover that reads “Book of Laws’, a vial of sand, a compass, a comic book that reads Mystery Tales: Hidden Lands. It has a picture of a city on a cloud above the same city on the ground. He places a crude knife on the comic book.]
RICHARD ALPERT: I want you to look at these things, and think about 'em. Okay, now tell me, John, which of these things belong to you?
YOUNG JOHN: To, to keep?
RICHARD ALPERT: No, no, John. Which of these things belong to you already?
[John pores over the items. First he takes the vial of sand. Then he takes the compass. He studies what is left. Richard seems encouraged by his choices. After a moment or so, John chooses the knife. Richard looks dismayed.]
RICHARD ALPERT: Are you sure the knife belongs to you, John?
RICHARD ALPERT: (John is nodding yes) You sure about that? (sighs in disappointment).
RICHARD ALPERT: Well, it doesn’t. (grabbing the knife from John).
FLORENCE: How did he do?
[Richard packs some of the objects back in the bad. Some are still in his hands. He quickly picks up his coat and hat, along with the bag, and hurries out the door.]
RICHARD ALPERT: I'm afraid John isn't quite ready for our school. I'm sorry I've wasted your time.
FLORENCE: What did you do?
[John bows his head as if he was a failure. Florence was blaming him for something he could not comprehend.]
[Switch to the pit in the jungle on the island. John is in the pit rummaging through the corpses. Ben is sitting on the edge of the pit and Hurley is standing.]
HURLEY: What's he doing down there?
[Ben shrugs his shoulders as to indicate he didn’t know.]
HURLEY: So, this is where you shot Locke and left him for dead, huh?
BEN: (with attitude) Yes, Hugo, I was standing right where you are now when I pulled the trigger. Should have realized at the time that it was pointless, but, I really wasn't thinking clearly.
HURLEY: Is that why you killed all these people, too?
BEN: (angrily) I didn’t kill them.
HURLEY: Well, if the Others didn't wipe out the Dharma Initiative...
BEN: (interrupting) They did wipe them out, Hugo, but it wasn't my decision.
HURLEY: Then whose was it?
BEN: Their leader's.
HURLEY: But I thought you were their leader.
BEN: Not always.
[Locke finds a pair of overalls and stops rummaging. On the pocket, embroidered, is Horace Mathematician. He unzips the pocket and pulls out a folded piece of paper, unfolds it to find that it is a map along with plans for building a cabin.]
LOCKE: The cabin. He was building it.
HURLEY: Find what you were looking for?
LOCKE: Yes, Hugo. I believe I did.
[Locke looks around and sighs with relief.]
[Switch to the freighter corridor. Keamy and Gault are walking quickly. Keamy is checking his gun again trying to figure out why it misfired.]
KEAMY: (to Captain Gault) I need your key.
GAULT: What?
[Frank approaches Gault and Keamy from behind.]
FRANK: Captain. Mayhew just died. Doc couldn't do anything for him. The crew's asking a lot of questions about what happened to you guys over there.
KEAMY: You tell the crew that I'm dealing with it, then you can go gas up the chopper, Frank. We're going back.
FRANK: Going back? The hell for?
KEAMY: (annoyed) Gas up the chopper, Frank.
FRANK: OK.
[Frank turns and leaved with a look of exasperation.]
GAULT: Listen, Martin. While you were gone, there was some sort of a sickness.
KEAMY: (ignoring Gault) Hmm Hmm.
GAULT: The crew, they've been exhibiting some very strange behavior. Regina threw herself overboard, for God's sake! Now I would be derelict in my duty if I didn't point out that this might be exactly what's happening to you.
KEAMY: I appreciate your concern. Give me your key
GAULT: That's not the protocol…
[Keamy grabs Gault and slams him against the wall. He is holding him up by his throat. Keamy rips the chain and key from Gault’s neck then puts him down.]
KEAMY: Thank you.
[Keamy opens a hatch door and it creaks loudly. Keamy enters with Gault in close pursuit. Keamy opens the bottom drawer on a file cabinet and partially pulls out a locked metal box. He uses the 2 keys to unlock the box. He removes a red translucent folder and from it a bound document. The document has a Dharma logo on it. As Keamy thumbs thru the pages the conversation continues.]
GAULT: The reason there are two keys is we're only supposed to open the safe together.
KEAMY: You're here, aren't you?
GAULT: What is that?
KEAMY: It's the secondary protocol.
GAULT: What does it say?
KEAMY: Says where Linus is going?
GAULT: How would Mr. Widmore know that?
KEAMY: 'Cause he's a very smart man, and if Linus knows that we're gonna torch the Island, there's only one place that he can go.
GAULT: What do you mean, "torch the Island"? That was not the agreement. I agreed to ferry you here for an extraction mission.
KEAMY: Fix my gun.
[Keamy stands up and hands Gault the gun and proceeds to leave the room. The gun is empty. The magazine in out inner barrel is exposed. Keamy is very angry. Gault is confused. Switch to freighter deck. It is now daytime. Sayid is next to Desmond. Two mercenaries carry the injured mercenary, on a stretcher passed them.]
DESMOND: The injured man. There was no gunshot. What do you think happened to him?
SAYID: I don't know. But when they go back, they'll be certain it doesn't happen again.
[Gault walks up to Omar passed Desmond and Sayid.]
GAULT: Omar! Keamy wants you in the armory.
OMAR: He said I wasn't supposed to let those two out of my sight.
GAULT: I’ll watch them. Go!
[As Omar walks the sat phone in his cargo pants pocket begins to beep. He takes it out and fades from view.]
GAULT: There's a pantry below our galley with enough room for two men. I've left you a supply of food and water. You need to go there.
SAYID: Michael? Is he dead?
GAULT: No, but not for lack of bloody trying, which is precisely why you two need to be hiding before Keamy comes back on this deck.
SAYID: Hiding is pointless. Give us your Zodiac raft so we can start ferrying people back here from the beach. The only way to save our lives is to get our people off that Island.
GAULT: (pauses) Meet me behind the container in ten minutes. The boat will be in the water.
[Desmond and Sayid smile at each other. Switch back to the pit in the jungle. Locke is reading from the map/house plans.]
LOCKE: (pointing to map) The cabin's here. We came from over there. Up the coast.
HURLEY: (with bottles of fresh water) Here you go. Drink up, dude. Digging through dead bodies takes it out of you.
LOCKE: It's gonna be dark soon, Hugo. If you head that way, you'll hit the coast, and all you have to do is take it north until you reach our beach.
HURLEY: Uh, what?
LOCKE: I forced you to come with us at gunpoint, and I'm sorry, Hugo, but I was led to believe that we needed you to find this place.
HURLEY: Oh, I get it. Now you got your magic map, you don't--you don't need me anymore.
LOCKE: I'm offering you a chance to leave. I don't want to put you in harm's way against your will.
HURLEY: You mean walking through the jungle at night by myself is gonna be any safer?
LOCKE: I'm not sure it is.
HURLEY: I think I'll stick with you guys. This way?
[Hurley has the machete now and points the way to go. He starts clearing underbrush. Locke puts on his backpack and motions for Ben to go next.]
LOCKE: What?
BEN: He actually thinks staying was his idea. Not bad, John. Not bad at all.
LOCKE: I’m not you.
BEN: (smirking) You're certainly not.
[Switch to row of high school lockers. A boy is trapped in one and is banging on the door trying to get someone to help him. The teenager is John Locke.]
JOHN: Somebody let me out! Please let me out. Please, somebody, let me…
[Mr. Gellert, a science teacher, frees John. There are cheerleaders giggling as John tumbles out. They are cheerleaders for the Crown Heights Knights. There is a poster of the musical group Geronimo Jackson on the inside of the door of John’s locker.]
GELLERT: John, you ok?
JOHN: I’m fine. I’m fine.
GELLERT: Get to class, ladies. Tardy bell just rang. John, you're bleeding. Come on. Let's go to the nurse's office.
[Switch to a school classroom. The only people there are John and Mr. Gellert.]
GELLERT: You wanna talk about it?
JOHN: (dabbing his bloody lip) No.
GELLERT: I know you're probably upset right now, but I do have some exciting news for you. I got a call from Portland recently. There's a company up there doing some very exciting things in chemistry and new technologies. They're called Mittelos Laboratories. I spoke with a Dr. Alpert. He's very interested in finding young, bright minds to enter into these new fields of science. They want you to go to their camp this summer.
[Mr. Gellert hands John a pamphlet about the science camp.]
JOHN: Science camp?
GELLERT:Yes.
JOHN: Don't you understand that things like science camp are the reason why I get stuffed into lockers?
GELLERT: John, this is a great opportunity.
JOHN: (interrupting)How do they even know about me?
GELLERT: Well, they must have sent a rep to the science fair--your display at Costa Mesa.
JOHN: (forcefully )I'm not a scientist! I like boxing and fishing and cars. I like sports!
GELLERT: 'm gonna tell you something--something I wish someone had told me at your age. You might not want to be that guy in the labs surrounded by test tubes and beakers, but that's who you are, John. You can't be the prom king. You can't be the quarterback. You can't be a superhero.
JOHN: (defiantly and slow) Don't tell me what I can't do.
[John slams the pamphlet on the table and leaves the classroom]
[Switch back to freighter. Frank opens a hatch door and enters the room. Michael is on the floor with his face is all bruised and bloody. He has been severely beaten. Frank lifts the cot off of Michael’s legs and starts to unshackle and help him to his feet.]
FRANK: (low voice) Why didn't you tell me?
MICHAEL: Tell you what?
FRANK: That you're a survivor of 815.
MICHAEL: Oww 'cause you wouldn't have believed me.
FRANK: You didn't think I'd believe you? I tell you that I'm one of the only people in the world that think that that plane on the bottom of the ocean is a hoax, and you didn't think I'd believe you?
MICHAEL: I didn't know if I could trust you. Your boss put that plane there.
FRANK: Hehehe Man, I thought I was Mr. Conspiracy, but you got me beat there.
MICHAEL: Listen to me. Listen to me. You can't fly that guy back, Keamy?
FRANK: You let me worry about Keamy, all right?
MICHAEL: You can't fly him back! He is gonna kill everyone on that Island. Everyone. And you don't want that on your conscience, man. Trust me.
[Frank and Michael leave the small room. Frank has to help Michael the entire way. No sooner do they get in the corridor than they hear panting and other noises. They notice an open door at the end of the corridor. Inside that room is Keamy and Omar. Omar is strapping an electrical device of some sort on Keamy’s left bicep. There is also a strap around Keamy’s naked chest. The 2 parties look at each other, a little taken back.]
FRANK: Hey, boss. Just getting him down to the engine room.
[Omar slams the door shut. Frank leads Michael away. Switch to front deck of the freighter. Gault appears with a backpack and a compass. Sayid and Desmond are waiting for him. He hands Sayid the pack and compass.]
GAULT: Stay on a heading of exactly 3-0-5. Faraday says that's the only safe way to and from the boat.
SAYID: What will you tell Keamy if he notices the Zodiac is missing?
GAULT: I'll tell him you stole it. Now go.
SAYID: Desmond.
DESMOND: I can't go with you.
SAYID: Why not?
DESMOND: I've been on that island for three years. I'm never setting foot on it again, not when Penny's coming for me.
SAYID: I'll be back with the first group as soon as I can.
DESMOND: Stay on that bearing, yeah.
SAYID: I will.
[Sayid prepares to climb down the side of the freighter into the Zodiac raft. We see Gault on an upper deck. He calls to the Desmond and Sayid.]
GAULT: You need to go. Now!
[Switch to jungle on the island. Locke, Ben and Hurley are still searching for the cabin. It is nighttime. They have torches.]
LOCKE: Should be about 200 yards this way.
BEN: You sure it's gonna be there, John?
LOCKE: I’m sorry?
BEN: The cabin. What if it's moved again?
LOCKE: It hasn't moved because I was told that this is where it would be.
BEN: I was told a lot of things, too. That I was chosen, that I was special. I end up with a tumor on my spine and my daughter's blood all over my hands.
LOCKE: I'm sorry those things happened to you, Ben.
BEN: Those things had to happen to me. That was my destiny. But you'll understand soon enough that there are consequences to being chosen, because, destiny, John, is a fickle bitch.
HURLEY: Guys? Cabin.
[John and Ben come stand next to Hurley. The cabin is in front of them. We hears sounds of the jungle at night, i.e. chirping.]
[Switch to Physical Therapy (PT) room. Locke is trying to walk between parallel bars. He is winded. He is dragging his toes. His arms are doing all the work. He collapses to the floor between the bars and starts crying in frustration.]
PHYSICAL THERAPIST: Okay, okay, okay. Good job, man. Good job, John. Okay, we'll try it some more tomorrow.
[He helps John back into the wheelchair that an orderly has brought to the parallel bars.]
PHYSICAL THERAPIST: (to orderly) He's all yours. Come on up.
ORDERLY: It’s alright. Come on. Don’t give up Mr. Locke.
LOCKE: Excuse me?
ORDERLY: I'm just saying, don't give up. Anything's possible.
LOCKE: (sarcastic laugh) You should read my file. My spine was crushed. There's a 98% chance I'll never get any feeling back in my legs. So I don't know why I'm even trying to…
[The orderly’s face comes into view. It is Matthew Abaddon, the man who visited Hurley at Santa Rosa.]
ORDERLY ABADDON: (interrupts) As a matter of fact, I did read your file. You survived falling eight stories out of a building. That's a miracle, Mr. Locke. Let me ask you something. Do you believe in miracles?
LOCKE: No. I don't believe in miracles.
ORDERLY ABADDON: You should. I had one happen to me.
LOCKE: Hey, look. I just want to go back to my room.
[Abaddon stops pushing the wheelchair. It stops precipitously at the edge of a flight of stairs. He then pushes the button for the elevator. He then turns the chair around, sits on a chair and continues to talk to Locke.]
ORDERLY ABADDON: You know what you need, Mr. Locke? You need to go on a walkabout.
LOCKE: Wha, what's a walkabout?
ORDERLY ABADDON: It's a journey of self-discovery. You go out into the Australian Outback with nothing more than a knife and your wits.
LOCKE: I can't "walkabout" anything. In case you haven't noticed, I'm a cripple.
ORDERLY ABADDON: Is that what you are, Mr. Locke? I went on my walkabout convinced I was one thing, but I came back another. I found out what I was made of, who I was.
LOCKE: And here you are, an orderly.
ORDERLY ABADDON: Oh, I'm a lot more than just an orderly, John.
[The elevator bell rings. The doors open. Abaddon wheels Locke into the elevator and turns him facing outward. He pushes a button for Locke’s floor. He walks around Locke and exits the elevator car. He turns back to Locke.]
ORDERLY ABADDON: (presses button to close doors) When you're ready, Mr. Locke you'll listen to what I'm saying. And then when you and me run into each other again, you'll owe me one.
[Switch back to the freighter. It is now nighttime. Various armaments and munitions are quickly being packed into duffle bags and loaded onto the chopper. There are automatic weapons and rocket launchers. Doc Ray is on the deck near the chopper packing medical supplies. Desmond watches from a stairwell that connects the main deck to the second level deck. Omar is next to Doc Ray.]
OMAR: Hey, doc. wanna hear something weird?
DOC RAY: Aah sure.
OMAR: You know that morse code message that I got from the beach? It said that the doctor washed up on the shore with his throat slit.
DOC RAY: But I’m the doctor.
OMAR: Crazy, right?
KEAMY: Everything here?
[More armaments and munitions are being packed and loaded on the chopper.]
OMAR: Yes, sir.
KEAMY: Good. Get it packed up.
[Frank walks up the deck toward Keamy and the chopper. He addresses Keamy.]
FRANK: What are you gonna do with all that?
KEAMY: Fire her up, Frank.
FRANK: I’m not taking you.
[Keamy walks angrily to Frank and they are now face to face. Frank stands his ground.]
KEAMY: I'll kill you, Frank
FRANK: Yeah, well, you do that, you'll never get back to the island 'cause I'm the only pilot you got.
[Keamy walks back to Doc Ray and Omar. He takes a knife from his waistband holder and slits Doc Ray’s neck open. He then throws Doc Ray overboard. Frank and Desmond watch in disgust and shock.]
KEAMY: That change anything, Frank? Huh? Another 30 seconds goes by and someone else's turn.
[A gunshot breaks thru the night air. Frank quickly turns around since the shot came from behind him. Gault approaches Keamy with gun aimed at him.]
GAULT: I fixed your gun. Now stand down, Martin, or I will fire.
KEAMY: I don't think you want do that, Captain.
[Keamy hands the bloody knife to Omar. He approaches Gault slowly with his hands raised up. Gault points to Keamy’s left bicep.]
GAULT: What's that on his arm? WHAT’S THAT ON HIS ARM?
[Keamy reaches for another gun from Omar’s cargo pant pocket and quickly aims and fires at Gault hitting him in the chest. Gault collapse to the deck as his gun fires also although no one is hit. Keamy turns to Frank.]
KEAMY: Hey! What’ll it be, Frank?
FRANK: (pausing) We’re flying.
KEAMY: Come on. Let's go, boys. Come on! Get the rest of the weapons onboard, and let's go. Let's go! Let's get out of here. Let's move out!
[Frank gets in the cockpit of the chopper and powers it up. He takes a sat phone, turns it on, sets it then wraps it in a yellow and black cloth and puts the bundle in a cloth bag. He puts the cloth bag on the floor between his feet. Keamy takes his gun from Gault’s dead hand, check it and stows it in his pant pocket.]
KEAMY: Thanks, Captain. Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on! Let's go!
[The remaining mercenaries board the chopper. The chopper takes off from the freighter to begin its journey to the island.]
[Switch to the beach where Jack and other people are waiting for rescue. Juliet approaches Jack who is out of bed and in a tent eating from a box of cereal.]
JULIET: Hey! What did I say to you?
JACK: (mouth full) You told me not to leave my tent. I was hungry.
JULIET: (nodding) Jack, you have to rest. You can't run around. I know that is hard for you to ask for help, but if you tear your stitches.
JACK: Okay. Okay. I got it.
JULIET: Doctors make the worst patients.
[The faint sound of the chopper is heard in the distance approaching the island beach. As it gets louder people begin to gather. Jin, Sun, Kate and the rest of the red shirts all gather together looking at the light of the approaching chopper. They are feeling close to rescue and it shows on their faces. As the chopper flies overhead, Frank tosses the cloth bag out of the chopper. It lands on one of the tent tops causing the tent to collapse. We can hear the rapid beeping from the sat phone.]
JULIET: Jack!
[Kate and Juliet retrieve the bag. They open it and find the sat phone. It is beeping loud and fast.]
JACK: I think they want us to follow 'em.
[Everyone looks at Jack confused. Switch to jungle at the cabin. Hurley, Ben and Locke are standing and staring at the cabin.]
LOCKE: All right. Let's do this.
BEN: I'm not going in there with you. The island wanted me to get sick and it wanted you to get well. My time is over, John. It's yours now.
HURLEY: Yeah, I'm cool with you going in alone, too.
BEN: Good luck, John
[Locke hands the torch to Hurley then takes of his backpack. He walks alone to the cabin door. He finds a lantern hanging next to the door takes it, lights it with a cigarette lighter. Now he opens the creaking door and enters the cabin.]
LOCKE: Are you Jacob?
MAN’S VOICE: No. But I can speak on his behalf.
LOCKE: Well, who are you?
[As Locke approaches the man cautiously, as the man leans forward. It is Christian Shepard. He is not in his suit and white sneakers. He is wearing work boots, khaki pants and a shirt. He is sporting a 5 o’clock shadow.]
CHRISTIAN: I’m Christian.
LOCKE: You know why I'm here?
CHRISTIAN: Yeah, sure. Do you?
LOCKE: I'm here, because I was chosen to be.
CHRISTIAN: That's absolutely right.
[A loud creak is heard to the right of Locke. He puts down the lantern and turns to look to see where the noise came from. He walks to find Claire sitting in a chair. She appears carefree as if slightly inebriated.]
LOCKE: Claire?
CLAIRE: Hi, John.
LOCKE: What're you doing here?
CLAIRE: (points to Christian) Don't worry. I'm fine. I'm with him.
LOCKE: Wh, where's the baby?
CHRISTIAN: The baby's where he's supposed to be, and that's not here. It's probably best that you don't tell anyone that you saw her.
LOCKE: Why? Why is she…
CHRISTIAN: (interrupting) We don't have time for this. The people from the boat are already on their way back, and once they get here, all of these questions won't matter one bit. So why don't you ask the one question that does matter?
LOCKE: (pausing) How do I save the island?
[Claire and Christian look and smile at each other. Switch to outside the cabin. Hurley and Ben are sitting next to each other on a log waiting for Locke. Hurley takes out a candy bar. Ben and Hurley look at each other. Hurley breaks the candy bar in half and offers Ben the piece with the wrapper. Hurley then puts his half of the bar into his mouth in one piece and begins to chew. Ben takes the other half and starts to eat the candy bar. Hurley and Ben share a moment with the candy bar. The door creaks and Locke exits the cabin and walks to the 2 men.]
BEN: Did he tell you what we're supposed to do.
LOCKE: He did.
BEN: (impatiently) Well?
LOCKE: He wants us to move the island.
[Ben and Hurley look at Locke in disbelief.]
