EPISODE 10 - Something Nice Back Home

Written by Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz

[Opening scene is a close-up view of a closed eye. Juliet's voice can be heard while the view still shows the eye.]

JULIET: (softly) Jack. (pause, then more forcefully) Jack!

[The eye opens. A blurry shot of Juliet's face is shown from the vantage point of the eye. A moment later, Jack's face is shown. They are inside a tent.]

JULIET: Jack, I need you to wake up. Jack!

[Jack slowly gathers his bearings and fuzzily looks around.]

JULIET: Can you hear me?

[Jack rises to a sitting position but still appears hazy. Juliet looks concerned.]

JULIET: You okay?

[Arguing can be heard from outside the tent.]

DANIEL: (off screen) Hey! What are you doing?!

BERNARD: (off screen) Come on! Come on! I just wanna know why.

JACK: What happened?

JULIET: (mumbling) Here...

ROSE: (off screen) He knows somethin'!

[Jack and Juliet, hearing the arguing going on outside, rise and leave the tent.]

[Scene shifts outside to the beach camp. Bernard and Rose are arguing with Dan and Charlotte, while Sun, Jin and a few redshirts anxiously stand by.]

BERNARD: I want the truth!

DANIEL: I don't know. That's the truth. I'm telling you, I don't know why, but there's no signal now.

BERNARD: (pointing to the jury-rigged sat. phone) Signal?! What, there was a signal when you called them last night!

ROSE: That's right!

[Jack and Juliet are seen exiting the tent.]

BERNARD: So-so-so what? Now they're just ignoring us?!

CHARLOTTE: How are we supposed to know why they're not answering?

ROSE: Oh, who's talking to you?

CHARLOTTE: (sarcastically) And in case you haven't noticed, we're not on the bloody boat, are we?

ROSE: (sassy) Just watch your tone, Red. (to Charlotte, who rolls her eyes)

BERNARD: I just wanna know why.

JACK: (with Juliet, walking up to the group) Hey! Everybody just needs to calm down, okay?

BERNARD: Jack, these people are lying to us!

[Jack is sweating heavily and looks to be feverish.]

JACK: I know they're lying. (softly) I know it. (pause) Sooner or later, their people are gonna come back for them... and when they do, we'll be waiting for them. (starts to walk away)

SUN: Unless they run off again.

JACK: (slightly stumbles to a halt) Listen to me.

ROSE: (concerned) Jack, are you all right?

JACK: No, I'm fine. (pause) We just have to be patient... okay? I've gotten us this far. I said I was gonna get us off the island... all of us. I promised that I would...

[Jack suddenly turns in pain and falls to the ground. Some gasp and say his name, while others rush to his side.]

ROSE: Jack?!

BERNARD: Jack?!

ROSE: Jack?!

[Juliet arrives by Jack and turns him face-up.]

JULIET: Jack? (Jack is unconscious, she cradles his cheeks in her palms) Jack!

[FLASHFORWARD]

[Scene opens with Jack lying asleep in bed. A telephone on a night stand is ringing. Jack groggily awakens and answers the phone.]

JACK: Hello?

[Jack picks up a watch off the night stand to check the time. A voice can be heard over the phone: Dr. Shephard? Just confirming your 11:00 consult with Ms. Berenberg. It was moved up yesterday and I know how you are with your calender.]

JACK: Yeah... yeah, I remember, Jane. I'll, um... I'll be in there.

JANE: Thank you, doctor.

JACK: Alright, bye.

[After Jack hangs up the phone, he sits up, wraps a towel around his waist and gets out of bed. He finds a pair of red panties on the floor, puts them in a drawer and heads downstairs. Jack is in a nicely furnished home. Upon walking into the kitchen he stumbles over something on the floor.]

JACK: Ow... son of a bitch.

[He stops and picks up a toy Millennium Falcon, then sets it on the counter. There are two wine glasses on the counter, with some wine still in them, which he puts in the kitchen sink. After getting the coffee maker ready to go, he picks up a newspaper off the counter and opens it to the sports section. A headline reads: Yankees bludgeon Red Sox in series sweep.]

JACK: (shaking his head in disgust) A-Rod...

[Jack folds the paper, sets it on the counter and leaves the room.]

[Scene shifts to Jack entering a bathroom. Someone can be heard showering. Jack smiles and walks across the room to the shower door. The door is steamed up and a vague figure of someone can be made out. Jack opens the door slightly and peaks his face inside.]

JACK: Morning.

[An unidentified voice talks to him from the shower.]

VOICE: Morning, yourself. I bought you a razor.

JACK: What... you don't like the scruff?

[Jack closes the shower door.]

VOICE: (laughs) Razor's by the sink, Jack.

[Jack walks to the sink. Smiling, he picks up the new razor and looks down to examine it. After looking back up at his reflection in the mirror, he sets the razor down, grabs a towel from the rack and returns to the shower. The door opens, revealing Kate as the person inside. She steps out of the shower and into Jack's arms.]

JACK: Morning.

[Jack and Kate share a passionate kiss.]

[cut to intro]

[Scene opens with a child's stars and planets mobile. The view is from underneath, showing the ceiling, then slowly pans down to Jack. They are in Aaron's bedroom. Jack is reading a bedtime story to Aaron, who can be seen all tucked into bed.]

JACK: Alice took up the fan and as the hall was very hot, she kept fanning herself all the time she went on talking: Dear, dear! How queer everything is today! And yesterday things went on just as usual. (Kate steps into the doorway in the background and silently listens in on them) I wonder if I've been changed in the night. Let me think. Was I the same when I got up this morning?

[Jack pauses to look over his shoulder at Kate. Aaron is now asleep in his bed. Jack turns back to him and continues reading anyways.]

JACK: But if I'm not the same the next question is, who in the world am I? Aha, that's the great puzzle.

[Jack closes the book and sets it down. He gazes at Aaron, then turns off the lamp and leaves the room. Kate slowly closes the door behind them. In the hallway, Jack leans against some cabinets and Kate faces him with her back against the wall.]

KATE: You're a natural.

JACK: (laughs and smiles) Yeah?

KATE: Yeah.

JACK: My old man used to read me that story.

KATE: (teasing smile) Really?

JACK: What?

KATE: (glowing) It's just... it's just sweet hearing you say nice things about your dad.

JACK: I don't say nice things about my dad?

[Kate smiles and looks back at him.]

JACK: (looking down) Well, he was a good storyteller. I'll give him that.

[When Jack looks up at Kate, her smile fades. He steps closer to Kate and holds her in his arms.]

JACK: Hey. You okay?

KATE: (softly) Yeah. Just, I... I love seeing you with him. (pause) I'm so glad you changed your mind. (pause) I'm so glad that you're here.

JACK: (whispers) Me too.

[Jack delicately kisses Kate, then picks her up in his arms as she wraps her legs around his waist. She giggles as he carries her into the other room.]

[ISLAND]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens with Juliet and Jin leaning over Jack and carefully sitting him against a tree. Jack's eyes slowly open.]

JULIET: (to Bernard) Keep him in the shade. I'll get him some water. (turns and moves away)

ROSE: Give... Give him some air, guys.

[Jack starts in pain and with a grunting No, crawls onto his knees as the group stands around and looks on.]

JIN: You okay?

JACK: (struggling to his feet) Yeah. I'm fine. I'm good. I'm good.

[Jack slowly begins staggering away.]

KATE: (to Bernard) Hey, what happened?

BERNARD: He passed out.

[Kate moves in front of Jack and stops him.]

KATE: You fainted?

JACK: (in obvious discomfort) I'm fine. I'm just, uh... I'm just a little dehydrated.

KATE: (feeling Jack's cheeks) No no no, Jack. You're not okay. You're burning up.

JACK: I'm fine. I'm fine. I just... I just need to get a little rest.

KATE: Jack...

JACK: I'm fine...

[Jack slowly staggers away while Kate and the rest of the group look on with concern.]

[Scene changes to Sawyer, Claire and Miles walking through a jungle of tall grass scattered with palm trees. Miles is out front while Sawyer follows behind Claire, who is carrying Aaron.]

CLAIRE: (stumbles) Oh!

SAWYER: You okay?

CLAIRE: Yeah... just a bit woozy.

SAWYER: How's your head?

CLAIRE: It's better. Bit of a headache, but at least I'm not seeing things anymore.

MILES: Yeah? What'd you see?

SAWYER: Back off, Donger.

MILES: I'm just making conversation.

SAWYER: Let's make some time.

[Miles stops in his tracks. Sawyer and Claire walk past.]

SAWYER: I wanna cover more ground before we gotta camp tonight. If we hoof it, we can make it to the beach by noon tomorrow.

[Miles looks around, listening intently. He is hearing cries of No! and the sound of bullets whizzing through the air. He focuses his gaze on an area of dirt on the ground. Sawyer and Claire stop to look at him.]

SAWYER: What?!

[Sawyer walks back to Miles.]

SAWYER: Hey!

[Miles just stares at the ground.]

SAWYER: Hey!

MILES: Who's Danielle and Karl?

CLAIRE: You... you mean Rousseau? The French woman?

[Miles kneels to the ground and starts clawing at the dirt with his bare hands while Sawyer and Claire nervously look on. First, he finds a leg, then clears some dead grass away to reveal a face. It is Rousseau.]

CLAIRE: (gasps) Oh my god...

[Claire turns away and Sawyer shields her from the view.]

MILES: Is this your French woman?

[Sawyer dreadfully looks at Rousseau. Miles notices something a few feet away, crawls over, then clears away dirt and grass to reveal Karl buried next to her.]

SAWYER: (sorrowfully) Karl...

[A frightened Claire watches and Aaron cries out.]

SAWYER: How'd you know they were down there?

[Miles looks up at Sawyer.]

SAWYER: Your buddies do this?

MILES: They're not my buddies, man. (stands) I didn't sign up for this.

[Sawyer stares him down.]

CLAIRE: Can we just... can we just get out of here, please? Can we just go?

SAWYER: Yeah... yeah, of course. But don't worry. Once we get back to the beach, everything's gonna be fine. All right? (Claire nods) Come on. Let's go.

[Scene ends with an overhead view. Sawyer and Claire leave, while Miles lingers for a moment looking at the ground. The view zooms in slightly on the shallow graves.]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene is inside a tent. Jack throws some pills into his mouth and swallows them with a drink of water, then Juliet enters the tent carrying another bottle of water and sets it down next to him.]

JACK: (groans) Ohhhh... (shakes head) I hate being sick.

JULIET: What do you think it is?

JACK: It's food poisoning.

JULIET: What makes you think that?

JACK: I've got some cramping... dehydrated, nausea...

[Juliet kneels next to Jack.]

JULIET: I respectfully disagree.

JACK: Do you?

JULIET: You want to lift your shirt up?

[Jack shakes his head.]

JULIET: If it's food poisoning, you got nothing to worry about.

[Jack reluctantly acquiesces, leans over and pulls up the side of his shirt. While Juliet is examining his side, Jack inhales sharply in pain. She pulls away and he sits back up.]

JULIET: It's your appendix, Jack.

[Jack painfully looks around.]

JULIET: When did the pain start?

JACK: Yesterday.

JULIET: Has it ruptured?

JACK: (shakes head) Not yet.

JULIET: Well... I guess we're just going to have to take it out.

[cut to commercial]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens with Juliet and Sun walking through the camp. Juliet has a pen and notebook in her hand and Jin is trailing them.]

JULIET: Do you remember where the medical station is or don't you?

SUN: Yes. I remember.

JULIET: These are the instruments that I need you to bring back. You'll find them in the drawers in the exam room.

[Upon reaching a table, Juliet sets the notebook on it and starts writing numbers next to a list of items.]

SUN: (reading off the list) Clamps? Sutures? Juliet, I don't know what these look like.

[Juliet pauses and looks at Sun.]

DANIEL: (from off screen) I can help.

[Juliet and Sun both turn to look at Dan. The others in the camp watch close by.]

DANIEL: (tentatively) I'm familiar with surgical instruments, uh...

JULIET: (walking over to Dan) I thought you were a physicist?

DANIEL: Yeah, well, I've done some animal autopsies, too, so if-if...

JIN: No.

SUN: We can't trust them.

CHARLOTTE: (scoffs) See, Dan? I told you. They're convinced we're trying to kill 'em. Might as well keep playing the part.

DANIEL: Damn it, Charlotte. That right there, that right there. (confronts her) Your... your attitude... your... very bad attitude... it's exactly why they don't trust us. (whispers) Come on.

[Dan moves back towards Juliet.]

DANIEL: Juliet, please. Don't blame us for... for this. For whatever is happening. We're scientists. We don't want anyone to get hurt. We just wanna help. Please let us help.

[Juliet rips the list from the notebook and hands it to Dan, then takes her pistol and offers it to Jin.]

JULIET: Either of them tries to run? Shoot 'em in the leg.

[Jin takes the gun. Charlotte looks disconcerted.]

JULIET: (to Sun) Get back here as fast as you can.

SUN: Okay.

DANIEL: (to Juliet) Thank you.

[Dan, Charlotte, Sun and Jin leave for the medical station, then Juliet speaks to Kate and the rest of the group.]

JULIET: We need to create a sterile environment. Find a hard surface, wash it down, gather as many tarps as you can.

[The group disperses on their task but Kate stays to question Juliet.]

KATE: Hey, Juliet. If everything that we need is at the medical station, then why don't we just bring Jack there?

JULIET: Because if we move him, there's a good chance that his appendix will rupture. And if that happens, he's gonna die.

[In the jungle.]

[Scene opens with an upwards view of the shadowy silhouette of Miles digging through his backpack and jungle foliage against a backdrop of sunny sky. Miles stops going through his backpack to look down the hill at Claire sitting in a creek bed on a tree and cradling Aaron. He hears footsteps and looks up to see a glaring Sawyer, who is standing next to him and holding a rifle.]

SAWYER: Don't even think about it.

MILES: (innocently) What?

SAWYER: Don't look at her... don't talk to her... don't mess with her. (pause) You got a restraining order. Twenty feet.

MILES: What are you, her big brother?

[Sawyer steps close to Miles.]

SAWYER: No... I'm the guy who's gonna put a boot in your face unless you say, "Yeah. I getcha."

MILES: Yeah. I getcha.

[With a shake of his head, Miles turns and walks away while Sawyer props his rifle on his shoulder and watches him go.]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens with Bernard setting up a table with a piece of metal plane wreckage for the top. Rose arrives with a bucket of water and sets it on the table, then takes a rag out and begins cleaning the table top. Bernard moves the bucket off the table and helps her.]

BERNARD: Honey, I am sure that Jack is gonna be okay. An appendectomy is just about the most common kind of surgery there is.

ROSE: That's not what I was thinkin' about. I was thinkin', "Why did he get sick?"

BERNARD: Why? It's just... it's just bad luck.

ROSE: The day before we're all supposed to be rescued, the person that we count on the most suddenly comes down with a life-threatening condition, and you're chalking it up to bad luck?

BERNARD: Well, what are you saying, that-that Jack did something to... offend the gods? People get sick, Rose.

[Rose stops cleaning the table and gives Bernard a look.]

ROSE: Not here. (pause) Here, they get better.

[Scene shifts to inside a beach tent. Jack is lying on his back with his shirt up and Juliet is shaving his abdomen in the area where she is going to perform the surgery.]

JACK: When was the last time you did this?

JULIET: An appendectomy or shaving a man's stomach? (pause for a shared laugh) In my residency. I did a lot of 'em back then. (continues shaving)

JACK: Then you know the incision needs to be two inches lower than where you're shaving.

JULIET: (smiles) I'm just cleaning the area. Thank you.

JACK: I wanna talk you through it.

JULIET: What?

JACK: I don't wanna be unconscious. We can use the lidocaine to numb the area... and then I can watch the procedure, help you out.

JULIET: And, uh... how are you gonna watch? ...flat on your back with my hand in your abdominal cavity?

JACK: We can use a mirror... and Kate can hold it.

JULIET: If someone's going to be in there, shouldn't it be someone with medical experience? Bernard's a dentist...

JACK: No, I want it to be Kate.

JULIET: (pauses and looks down) Okay.

[FLASHFORWARD]

[Scene opens with Jack and a patient walking through the busy lobby of a hospital.]

JACK: Don't worry, Ms. Berenberg. You're in good hands.

MS. BERENBURG: Thank you.

JACK: I'll see you tomorrow at 5:00 a.m.?

MS. BERENBURG: Mmhmm.

JACK: And remember, no solid food. Okay?

MS. BERENBURG: Thank you, Doctor.

JACK: Have a good evening.

[Jack moves to walk back the way he came but stops when someone in the crowd catches his eye. He turns to see Christian from the side and behind as he walks away and passes out of sight. Jack disbelievingly looks on. A female doctor has approached him from behind and speaks his name twice to get his attention before Jack acknowledges her.]

DR. STEVENSON: Will you take a look at this x-ray? Uh, it's in the L4. Tell me what you think. (hands the x-ray to Jack)

JACK: (looking at the x-ray as they walk away) The L4. Yeah. Yeah.

RECEPTIONIST: Oh, Dr. Shephard... (Jack and Dr. Stevenson stop to look back at the her) ...there's a call for you. It's a Dr. Stillman from Santa Rosa Hospital, says it's about a friend of yours.

[Scene changes to Jack and Dr. Stillman walking down a darkened hallway. An orderly locks a cage door behind them.]

DR. STILLMAN: He's refusing to take his meds and he's stopped sleeping.

JACK: What about his therapy sessions?

DR. STILLMAN: Therapy's... been rendered useless.

[They come to a stop and face each other.]

JACK: And why is that?

DR. STILLMAN: (removes glasses) Because he doesn't think I exist.

[Dr. Stillman reaches towards the wall and unlocks a door by pressing a button on a keypad. Jack opens the door and enters the room alone. Hurley is sitting on a bed in his robe staring at the wall.]

JACK: Hey, Hurley.

HURLEY: (continues staring at wall) Hey, Jack.

[Jack grabs a chair and takes a seat next to Hurley.]

JACK: Why aren't you taking your meds?

HURLEY: 'Cause we're dead. (pause) All of us. (pause) All the Oceanic Six, we're all dead. We never got off that island.

JACK: Hurley... that is not true.

HURLEY: What'd you do today?

JACK: What did I do today? I, uh... (sigh) I woke up, took a shower. Uh... Kate and I fed the baby.

HURLEY: I thought you didn't want anything to do with Aaron.

JACK: I changed my mind after the trial.

HURLEY: Livin' with Kate... takin' care of Aaron... it all seems so perfect... just like heaven.

JACK: Just because I'm happy doesn't mean that this isn't real, Hurley.

HURLEY: I was happy too, Jack. (pause) For a while, anyway... then I saw Charlie. (pause) He likes to sit with me on the bench out on the front lawn... it's pretty cool actually.

JACK: Okay, so what do the two of you talk about?

HURLEY: Well, yesterday he told me that you were gonna be coming by... he wanted me to give you a message.

JACK: A message?

[Hurley opens the drawer to his night stand and removes a piece of paper.]

HURLEY: He made me write it down... so I wouldn't mess it up. (reading from the note) You're not supposed to raise him, Jack.

[Jack, visibly upset, stands and faces the door.]

HURLEY: Does that make any sense?

JACK: No, that... doesn't make any sense.

HURLEY: You think he means Aaron?

[Jack turns to face Hurley and their eyes meet for the first time. Jack looks away first.]

JACK: (holding up a finger) Take your meds, Hurley... just take 'em.

[Jack opens the door and moves to leave.]

HURLEY: Hey, Jack?

[Jack stops and looks back at Hurley from the doorway.]

HURLEY: Charlie said someone's gonna be visiting you too. (pause) Soon.

[Jack shifts uncomfortably before closing the door behind him and leaving.]

[cut to commercial]

[ISLAND]

[Scene opens with Dan, Charlotte, Jin and Sun hiking through the jungle.]

SUN: We're here.

[After Jin clears away the vines and leaves that were covering the entrance to the medical station, Charlotte opens the door. Jin pulls his pistol and warily stands back as Charlotte prepares to enter the station. Dan grabs her by the arm and stops her before she can though.]

DANIEL: Hey, uh... why don't you let me... go first? Um... ya know, make sure everything's safe.

CHARLOTTE: Okay. Be careful, Dan.

DANIEL: Absolutely.

JIN: (in Korean) Do you think she knows he likes her?

SUN: (in Korean) She's a woman. She knows.

[As Charlotte moves to enter the station, she glances back at the two Koreans with a slight smile. Jin takes notice of this.]

SUN: (in Korean) Jin. Come on.

[Scene shifts to inside the station. Sun slides open a heavy door and turns on the lights, then they all file into the room.]

DANIEL: Where do you suppose all this power's coming from?

CHARLOTTE: Add that one to the list, Dan. Let's just grab the equipment and go, shall we?

[As Dan and Charlotte begin with their task, Sun gazes at an examining table.]

JIN: (in Korean) Are you all right?

SUN: (in Korean) This is where Juliet brought me. This is where I saw our baby.

[Jin follows her gaze to the ultrasound machine. After a glance at Dan and Charlotte, Sun continues.]

SUN: (in Korean) They're not going to help us, Jin.

[For the second time, Charlotte glances at them while they speak Korean, and again, Jin takes notice.]

JIN: (in Korean) Don't worry about them. I promise you, Sun. I will get you and our baby off this island.

[Sun steps away from Jin, leaving him to contemplate another furtive glance from Charlotte.]

[In the jungle.]

[Sawyer, with rifle in hand, leads the group, while Claire follows with Aaron and Miles brings up the rear. When Claire stumbles, Miles tries to help her.]

MILES: Whoa! Hey, you want a hand with the baby?

CLAIRE: Oh, no, thanks. I'm fine.

MILES: You sure? I'm good with kids.

[Sawyer stops from the lead, turns and walks back to get in Miles' face.]

SAWYER: What part of restraining order don't you understand?

[Someone is heard running through the jungle. The group turns to look toward the sound. Sawyer cocks his rifle and shields Claire.]

SAWYER: (whispering) Get behind me, Claire.

[Sawyer takes aim at the noise, which is clearly coming towards them, when all of a sudden Lapidus comes running out of the jungle carrying a med kit in one hand and a sat. phone in the other. He looks up to see a gun being pointed straight at him and screeches to a halt with arms raised.]

FRANK: Whoa! Hey!

[The sat. phone in Frank's hand can be heard steadily beeping.]

SAWYER: The hell are you?

MILES: (surprised) Lapidus?

FRANK: (confused) Miles?

SAWYER: (looks to Miles, then back at Frank) You two know each other?!

FRANK: (to Miles) You gotta hide, man. Right now.

MILES: What?

[The beeping from the sat. phone is steadily getting faster.]

FRANK: Keamy's comin' back. And if he sees you, he'll kill all of ya.

[Frank looks down at the sat phone, which shows a single dot for him and a group of dots for Keamy's group closing in fast.]

FRANK: ...and he's close, man. You gotta hide. Now! Go! Hide! Just hide!

[Sawyer grabs Claire by the arm and rushes away with Miles close behind them to hide out of sight behind a nearby tree. Lapidus looks down at the sat. phone and sees the group of dots almost to him. A moment later, he looks up to see Keamy leading his team out of the jungle. One of them is badly injured and is being carried arm over shoulder by two of the group.]

KEAMY: Where's the chopper?

FRANK: (motions with one hand) It's about a click back that way.

KEAMY: Did you bring the kit?

FRANK: Yeah, it's right here.

[Sawyer's group is shown watching the scene through the foliage.]

FRANK: (looking at the injured merc) Jeez, man. He looks bad. What the hell happened?

KEAMY: You do your job. I'll do mine.

[Keamy takes the med kit from Lapidus and hands it to one of the mercs. When Aaron makes a slight crying noise, Keamy looks sharply to the jungle, not knowing what he heard. Claire clutches Aaron tightly to keep him quiet. Only birds and insects can be heard chirping from the jungle now as Keamy continues to looks suspiciously around the area. Frank intervenes to draw his attention away from whatever he thought he heard.]

FRANK: (looks up to the sky) Okay... It's gettin' dark man.

[The merc with the med kit is shown in the background tending to his wounded comrade. The scene switches back and forth from Keamy looking around for the source of the noise he heard, to Sawyer's group hiding just out of his sight. Sawyer readies his gun in case they are found out.]

FRANK: We gotta leave, now. Mr. Keamy... we gotta get back to the chopper. Keamy, we gotta get back. 'Cause I'll tell ya right now, I am not flying Faraday's bearings at night. I'm not gonna do it, so if you wanna get back, we gotta leave right now, sir.

KEAMY: Fine. You lead the way.

[Frank looks relieved and turns to lead them back to the chopper.]

KEAMY: (nods to the other mercs) Come on.

[As the other group disappears into the jungle, Sawyer lowers his head in relief. A merc can be heard in the distance saying 'watch it now'. Claire kisses Aaron on top of his head and Sawyer looks back warily in the direction of the parting group.]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens with Juliet walking up to Kate.]

KATE: Tent's all set, everything's ready.

[Bernard and a redshirt are seen walking by carrying an empty stretcher.]

JULIET: Good, thanks. Listen, I could use an extra pair of hands in there, you wanna help me out?

KATE: (nervously looks around) Um, I don't... I don't think that's a good idea...

JULIET: (interrupting) It's just holding a mirror. Jack wants to watch the surgery, talk me though it.

[Kate laughs.]

JULIET: What?

KATE: I'm just surprised he hasn't taken it out himself by now.

[Juliet smiles and looks to her right, then sees Jack come staggering out of the tent he was in. He looks down and sees the stretcher as Kate and Juliet approach him with concern.]

JULIET: Jack... what are you doing?

JACK: I don't need a stretcher. I can walk fifty feet.

KATE: I'll help you.

[Kate stands next to Jack and he puts an arm around her shoulders for support.]

JULIET: They're going to be back with the instruments soon. We need to be ready to go as soon as they get back. See you in there.

[Juliet heads off in one direction and Kate stays to help Jack walk to his surgery.]

KATE: So, it looks like I'm gonna be your nurse.

JACK: (breathing heavily) Wouldn't be the first time.

[Jack is laboring hard from walking.]

JACK: Listen, um... if something happens to me...

KATE: Chin up, Jack.

JACK: (smiles and nods) Fair enough.

[FLASHFORWARD]

[Scene opens with an overhead view of an open truck window. It's night out and a train can be heard in the distance blowing it's horn. The view pans down to look inside the window. Jack is seen sitting behind the steering wheel staring off into distance. The view switches to what he is staring at. It is the Santa Rosa Mental Health Facility. The yard is empty and the table where Hurley talks to Charlie is shown. Jack silently gazes on. He eventually gathers himself, cranks the motor and drives away.]

[Scene changes to a close-up view of a sleeping Kate. Jack is sitting next to her. A dog can be heard barking in the background. They are inside Kate's house.]

JACK: (softly) Kate... Kate... wake up.

[Kate slowly stirs from her slumber.]

KATE: Hey... what time is it?

JACK: It's late. I just got home.

[Kate sits up next to Jack.]

KATE: Were you working?

JACK: (shaking his head) No... I just... had to stop and get something. I just... took a while.

KATE: (concerned) Hey... what's going on? What's wrong?

JACK: The other night... when I was reading to Aaron, you said... that I was a natural. (pause) Do you really... (struggling with the words) do you really think I'm good at this?

[Kate smiles and nods reassuringly.]

KATE: Yeah... you're good at this.

[Jack smiles and sighs with relief. He looks down, trying to muster his nerve, before looking back at Kate. After a long pause, he speaks again.]

JACK: Will you marry me?

[Kate watches him in stunned silence while Jack retrieves a black ring box from his coat pocket. He opens the box to show the ring to Kate, who is now beginning to smile and cry at the same time. Jack takes the ring from the box and Kate looks up to Jack.]

KATE: (very emotional) Yes.

[Jack slides the ring onto her finger.]

KATE: Of course I will. Yes.

[Kate kisses him on the neck and they embrace.]

[cut to commercial]

[ISLAND]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens at night with Juliet lighting a hand held torch from the campfire, then she walks over to Bernard and uses it to light a tiki torch. They are next to the tent where the surgery is to take place and many tiki torches can be seen lighting the area.]

BERNARD: (pointing) Look, they're back.

[Juliet hands her torch to Bernard then rushes over to Daniel, who is arriving back at the camp with Jin, Sun and Charlotte.]

JULIET: Did you find everything?

DANIEL: Yes ma'am. The entire list.

[Dan unshoulders his pack and hands it to Juliet.]

DANIEL: Is he okay?

JULIET: For now. Sun, we need to sterilize these. There's a pot of water boiling over here.

[When Juliet leads Sun away and Daniel follows, Charlotte moves to go after them but is stopped by the sound of her name.]

JIN: Charlotte.

[She turns to face him.]

CHARLOTTE: Yeah?

JIN: (in Korean) I know you understand me.

CHARLOTTE: Pardon?

JIN: (in Korean) I know you speak Korean. You smiled when Sun and I talked about you. And you were listening to us at the station.

CHARLOTTE: I'm sorry, perhaps I can get your wife to trans...

JIN: (in Korean) If you continue to lie... I'm going to hurt your friend Daniel. (pause) I'm going to break his fingers one at a time. (pause) Do you understand that?

CHARLOTTE: (in Korean) What do you want?

JIN: (in Korean) When the helicopter comes for you... You're going to take my wife off this island.

CHARLOTTE: (in Korean) What about you and the rest of your friends?

JIN: (in Korean) Just get her on the helicopter.

[Charlotte pauses to consider, then nods in agreement. After a look, Jin leaves her standing there alone.]

[Scene changes to inside a tent. Juliet turns on a medical light over Jack before going to clean her hands in a bowl of water. Kate is seen tying her hair up and Bernard, with latex gloves on, is thumping a needle to prepare it for use. Jack lies on the table, ready for surgery. Bernard approaches Jack with the needle in one hand and a pair of forceps holding a sponge soaked with iodine in the other, which he uses to clean the area on Jack's stomach for the surgery.]

BERNARD: Ya know, Jack, they found some chloroform at the medical station. I could knock ya out. Wouldn't you rather be dreaming about somethin' nice back home?

JACK: No... manage with the lidocaine.

[Bernard just shakes his head.]

JACK: Kate... yeah...

[Jack breathes heavily and grunts with pain. Kate readies the mirror as Bernard injects the incision area with the lidocaine. Jack positions the mirror so he can see better.]

JACK: ...just hold it right there.

BERNARD: Okay now, this is going to numb the area of the first incision. After that... I would like to be able to tell you you're not gonna feel a thing... but... you will.

[Juliet, now with gloved hands, approaches Jack.]

JULIET: You ready?

[Jack nods. Juliet looks to Bernard, who hands her a scalpel. Kate dutifully holds the mirror.]

JULIET: Okay. Here we go.

[Juliet begins making the incision, while Kate and Bernard nervously watch. Jack grunts in pain.]

JULIET: Okay, Jack, one more.

[Jack grunts in pain again.]

JULIET: Okay, try not to move.

[Jack continues grunting in pain, even louder now, as Juliet continues cutting.]

JULIET: Just... stay still. (to Bernard) Spreader.

JACK: Kate! I... I can't see it.

KATE: Sorry...

JULIET: Don't worry about the mirror, just stay still. (to Bernard) Spreader.

[Bernard retrieves the spreader for Juliet and she readies it for use.]

JACK: (another groan of pain) That's good. That's good right there... there... this is it. That's good.

[When Juliet applies the spreader to Jack, he screams in pain.]

JULIET: Knock him out Bernard.

[Bernard goes for the chloroform.]

JACK: No! No! Hey... not wanna be unconscious.

JULIET: You don't want to be out of control.

JACK: Kate...

JULIET: Kate, you need to leave.

JACK: No...

JULIET: Bernard!

[Bernard opens a bottle of chloroform in the background.]

JACK: Kate...

JULIET: Kate, you need to go!

JACK: Please...

JULIET: Bernard!

JACK: No!

[Bernard soaks some chloroform into a cloth.]

JULIET: Kate! Get out of here! Bernard!

KATE: (crying helplessly) Jack...

JULIET: Kate! Kate, get outta here! Damn it, Bernard! Knock him out!

[Bernard approaches with cloth in hand.]

BERNARD: I'm sorry Jack, but I agree.

[After a final grunting no! of defiance from Jack, Bernard holds the cloth over his mouth and nose, knocking him out cold.]

[FLASHFORWARD]

[Scene opens with a close-up of the bright white background of an x-ray viewer. A pair of hands hang an x-ray on it. The view pans out to show Jack in his darkened office facing the bright viewer, which has multiple x-rays on it. He looks down and picks up an open folder from the table in front him. Reading from the folder, he speaks into a small, hand held recorder.]

JACK: Laker, Ryan. Patient's male, 36.

[A beep is heard. Jack leans closer to the x-ray for a closer look.]

JACK: Osteoblastoma is present in the posterior area of the lumbar. I am recommending biopsy for...

[Another beep is heard. This time, Jack stops what he's doing and takes notice. Upon hearing another beep, he puts the folder and recorder down and exits his office. After he steps out into the hallway, he hears the beep again and follows the sound. A few beeps later, he is led to the lobby of the hospital and a smoke alarm positioned over the receptionist's desk. He slides a chair over and uses it to climb on top of the desk. Reaching up, he opens a small door on the alarm and removes the dying battery, effectively stopping the beeping noise. He climbs down off the desk to study the battery and hears a voice call out his name.]

CHRISTIAN: (sternly) Jack.

[Jacks jumps in shock, then looks across the lobby to see his father sitting on a couch in his suit and white sneakers. He begins slowly walking towards Christian, who sits in silence staring back at him. A figure is seen approaching him from behind, while he gazes at his father with a stunned look on his face. Christian only leans forward on the couch and continues staring at his son. Again, Jack jumps to the sound of his own name.]

DR. STEVENSON: Jack.

[This time, he turns to see Dr. Stevenson standing there. She looks to the couch Jack was staring at and he whirls to look back as well. Christian has vanished. With a heavy sigh, Jack holds a hands to his head and walks over to Dr. Stevenson.]

DR. STEVENSON: (with a pleasant smile) You okay?

JACK: Oh, yeah... I'm um... I'm okay.

[Jack walks past, then turns to face her. As he speaks, he is on the verge of breaking down into tears.]

JACK: I, uh... (sniffle) I just, uh... the um... the smoke detector was... was beeping... and I just... (shows her the battery)

DR. STEVENSON: (slightly bemused) Okay. Thank you for keeping us safe.

[With a smile, she turns and begins to walk away, but stops when he continues speaking.]

JACK: (better holding it together now) Erika, um... (deep sigh) Do you mind doing me a favor?

DR. STEVENSON: Yeah, sure.

JACK: Can you write a scrip for... clonazepam?

DR. STEVENSON: For you?

JACK: Yeah, I'm... I just got a lot going on right now, and um... I'm just a little... snowed under with all my caseload and... Kate and I got engaged. Just... not sleeping very well at night, ya know?

[Erika takes out a pen and her prescription pad, then scribbles something on it. She tears off the sheet and hands it to Jack.]

JACK: Thank you.

DR. STEVENSON: You know, getting engaged is supposed to help reduce stress, not create it.

[Jack looks away and uncomfortably laughs it off.]

JACK: Yeah... you're right.

DR. STEVENSON: Maybe you should talk to someone.

JACK: (nods and looks back at Erika) I'll do that.

DR. STEVENSON: Good night.

JACK: Good night.

[As Dr. Stevenson turns and walks away, Jack looks down at the folded paper in his hands.]

[Scene changes to Kate's house. Jack enters through the front door, then locks it behind him. As he walks into the place he can hear Kate's voice talking to someone on the phone.]

KATE: (from the other room) Yeah, I'll just have the nanny stay for an extra couple hours. Jack's never home before 8:00 anyway.

[Jack follows the sound of her voice and finds her in the kitchen. Kate's back is turned to Jack and she does not realize he is home yet.]

KATE: I could stay for at least an hour.

[Jack jingles his keys to draw attention to his presence. Hearing this, Kate turns to face Jack.]

KATE: (still on the phone) I gotta go. Jack's home. Yeah, okay. I'll call you later. Bye.

[After hanging up the phone, she sets it on the charger and acknowledges Jack.]

KATE: Hey.

JACK: Hey.

KATE: (smiling) You scared me.

JACK: Sorry. I thought you'd be in bed. Who was that?

[While they converse, Kate makes her way about the kitchen. First taking an empty glass from the cabinet, then filling it with water from a pitcher out of the fridge.]

KATE: That was Noreen.

JACK: Noreen?

KATE: Yeah. She's one of the moms from the park. (smiling, but feeling Jack's suspicion) What?

[Jack shakes his head like nothing is wrong and smiles pleasantly.]

JACK: Nothing. I just... never heard you mention her before.

KATE: Well, now you have.

[Kate approaches Jack and gently kisses him on the lips.]

KATE: I'll see you upstairs.

[Kate, with glass of water in hand, takes her leave of Jack and retreats upstairs. Jack, visibly uncomfortable, removes a pharmacy bag from his inside coat pocket. After dropping his keys on the counter, he retrieves his prescription bottle of clonazepam from inside the bag. He opens the bottle and shakes two pills out into his hand, then retrieves a beer from the fridge. When he pops the pills into his mouth, he chases them with a strong pull from his beer. The scene closes with Jack looking extremely rattled.]

[ISLAND]

[In the jungle.]

[Scene opens at night looking at a burning campfire. The view pans over to show a sleeping Miles, then a sleeping Sawyer and finally a sleeping Claire. Still asleep, she is feeling around for Aaron, who is not in her arms and nowhere to be seen. Realizing this, she awakens and begins looking around frantically for her baby. Her view stretches across the campfire, where she sees Christian cradling Aaron in his arms. He looks up at her pleasantly, leaving a bewildered look on her face.]

CLAIRE: Dad?

[cut to commercial]

[At the beach camp.]

[Scene opens with a close-up view of Kate. She is sitting on the beach in the darkness of night. Tiki torches flicker around the area to provide some light. Her demeanor appears emotionally drained from Jack's surgery. Bernard approaches and kneels on one knee next to her.]

BERNARD: Hey... don't worry. It went well.

[Kate smiles but is trying to hold back tears. Bernard speaks warmly to comfort her.]

BERNARD: (reassuringly) She did good. She said you could go back inside if you want to.

KATE: (sniffles) Thank you.

BERNARD: Okay.

[Scene changes to inside the tent where Jack is recovering from surgery. He appears unconscious and Juliet is stitching up the incision. Kate tentatively enters the tent. Juliet looks up to acknowledge her, then resumes her work.]

JULIET: He didn't lose that much blood. I got the appendix out and put everything back where it belongs, I think.

[Juliet smiles pleasantly at Kate, who laughs in return.]

KATE: So he's gonna be okay?

JULIET: He should be fine. We just have to talk him into resting.

KATE: Good luck with that. (laughs)

JULIET: I'm sorry I yelled at you.

KATE: Don't worry about it. You had enough going on.

[Juliet pauses for thought before continuing.]

JULIET: You know, he kissed me.

KATE: What?

JULIET: The other day, when you came back from the other side of the island, Jack kissed me.

KATE: (blinks, speaks softly) Oh.

[Juliet continues working on Jack's stitches while talking to Kate.]

JULIET: It was nice... but it wasn't for me. It was for him. I'm pretty sure he was trying to prove something.

KATE: Prove what?

JULIET: That he doesn't love someone else.

[Juliet looks down to place a large gauze pad on Jack's wound, then looks back over to Kate.]

KATE: Thank you, Juliet.

[Juliet slightly nods in return.]

KATE: (nods) Thank you for saving his life.

[Kate leaves the tent and Juliet resumes tending to Jack.]

JULIET: (to Jack) I know you're awake.

[Jack slowly opens his eyes, as Juliet continues patching him up.]

[FLASHFORWARD]

[Kate's house.]

[Scene opens with a view of Kate across the living room from Jack's point of view. In his hand, he toys with a bottle cap while sitting low in a chair. She has just arrived home and doesn't notice him until he speaks.]

JACK: Hey.

[A surprised Kate looks around the room, not expecting him to be there. She crosses the room toward him as she speaks.]

KATE: Hey. You're home early. Where's Veronica?

JACK: I sent her home. The baby's asleep.

KATE: Good.

[When Kate takes a seat on the couch across from him, she notices a few empty bottles of beer and a bottle of scotch on the coffee table.]

JACK: Why was she here?

[Jack takes a sip of scotch from a rocks glass.]

KATE: Sorry?

JACK: The nanny. She only works till four. I came home at six.

KATE: I had to run some errands, so... (removes her watch and sets it on the table) I asked her to stay a couple extra hours.

[Jack looks down in discomfort, causing Kate to look over at him with concern.]

KATE: What's going on, Jack? (pause) Why are you home so early?

JACK: I went to see Hurley.

KATE: (mildly shocked) Today?

JACK: Last Friday.

KATE: Why didn't you tell me? I woulda gone with you.

[Jack, obviously intoxicated, laughs disturbingly at that.]

JACK: Because he's crazy, Kate... and I didn't wanna upset you. (pause, sigh) Where were you today?

[Kate moves from the couch to kneel in front of Jack.]

KATE: I'm gonna ask you... to trust me. Trust me, just leave it be.

JACK: (pause, deep sigh) Where were you?

KATE: (whispers) Jack, don't.

JACK: (slightly agitated now) No, I heard you on the phone last night. Who were you talking to?

KATE: Just let it go...

[Kate stands and begins walking away.]

JACK: No, no, I wanna know.

[Jack stands and begins following her across the room.]

KATE: No, Jack...

JACK: I wanna know where you were. I wanna know who you were with.

KATE: It doesn't matter, Jack. Please...

JACK: No, tell me. (yells) Tell me!

[Kate, on the verge of tears, turns to face Jack.]

KATE: I was doing something for him.

JACK: (quietly) For who?

KATE: For Sawyer. (pause) I made him a promise.

[Jack incredulously looks around the room for a moment.]

JACK: What?

KATE: (very upset) It doesn't matter. It has nothing to do with us.

JACK: Then why won't you tell me?

KATE: Because... because he wouldn't want me to.

JACK: But he's not here, is he? No... No, he made his choice. He chose to stay. I'm the one who came back. I'm the one who's here. I'm the one who saved you.

[Jack turns and looks away from her.]

KATE: Jack... (sniffles) You can't... you can't do this. If you have problems, you need to figure them out. All right? 'Cause I can't have you like this around my son.

[Jack turns back to face her again.]

JACK: Your son?! You're not even related to him!

[Kate pauses and looks to the side. Jack follows her gaze to see Aaron standing across the room holding a stuffed animal. Kate goes over to him, picks him up and cradles him in her arms.]

KATE: Hey, sweet pea. Hey.

[Jack, with a defeated look on his face, turns and slowly walks away. Kate, holding Aaron and crying, watches him go.]

[ISLAND]

[In the jungle.]

[Scene opens with Miles poking at the remains of the campfire with a stick. It is morning now and the birds are singing. Sawyer awakens from his slumber, looks over to Miles, groans and rises to a sitting position.]

MILES: Morning.

SAWYER: It's way too early for Chinese. (grunts) Where's Claire? Ladies' room?

MILES: Nope... she just walked off into the jungle.

[Sawyer, confused, looks over to Miles.]

SAWYER: What? (looks out at the jungle) When?

MILES: In the middle of the night... just got up and left.

SAWYER: And you let her go alone?

MILES: She wasn't alone.

[Sawyer rises to his feet.]

SAWYER: Well, who was she with?

MILES: She called him Dad. I'd have followed them... but I have a restraining order.

[When Miles looks up at Sawyer with a sarcastic laugh, Sawyer reaches over and grabs him by the shoulder in return. Before he can hit Miles with the butt of his pistol though, he hears the sound of a crying baby. Looking frantically out into the jungle, he calls out.]

SAWYER: Claire! Claire!

[Sawyer retrieves his rifle from the ground and chases after the sound. After a moment of running through the jungle, he comes across Aaron lying in his blanket on a bed of leaves.]

SAWYER: (softly) It's okay. It's okay. I got ya.

[He shoulders his rifle, then leans down, gently picks up Aaron and cradles him in the blanket.]

SAWYER: Claire!

[Aaron continues to cry as Sawyer looks for any sign of his mother.]

SAWYER: Claire! (pause, more frantic now) Claire!

[The final view is looking down on them from above. Sawyer calls one last desperate time.]

SAWYER: CLAIRE!!
