LOST Wins Best Network Television Series at Saturn Awards

Lost won the Best Network Television Series award at the 35th Annual Saturn Awards. The show beat out Fringe, Heroes, Life on Mars, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Supernatural to win the award.

Unfortunately, Lost did not win for any of its ten acting nominations. Instead, the acting awards went to Edward James Olmos (Best Actor in Television, Battlestar Galactica), Mary McDonnell (Best Actress in Television, Battlestar Galactica), Adrian Pasdar (Best Supporting Actor in Television, Heroes), Jennifer Carpenter (Best Supporting Actress in Television, Dexter), and Jimmy Smits (Best Guest Starring Role in a Television Series, Dexter).

In the Movies category, The Dark Knight took five awards, including Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film and Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Iron Man took three awards each; Benjamin Button got Best Fantasy Film and Best Supporting Actress for Tilda Swinton, while Robert Downey, Jr. won Best Actor for Iron Man.

IGN - SDCC 09: Lost Returns to Comic-Con

During a visit to Disney to watch the pilot to their new series Flash Forward this morning (look for Matt Fowler's write up on that soon), Mr. Fowler and myself also got some information about when ABC will be doing a panel for that series at Comic-Con, plus the info on what is always the most popular TV-oriented panel at the convention - Lost.

The Lost panel will be held Saturday, July 25th at 11:00am in Hall H. Hall H is the largest venue at Comic-Con and holds 6500 people and no TV-specific panels had been held there until last year, when a packed room was in attendance for back-to-back panels for Heroes and Lost. While Heroes, coming off a poorly received season, is not doing an official Comic-Con panel this year, the hot as ever Lost will once again no doubt have thousands of fans eager to get any info they can on the upcoming final season.

While details are not available yet as to who will be on the panel, we expect it will once again be Executive Producers/Showrunners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. The last two years, Lindelof and Cuse have been joined by surprise guests - Harold Perrineau ("Michael") in 2007 and Matthew Fox ("Jack") in 2008.

A day earlier, on Friday, July 24th, a panel will be held for Flash Forward at 11:45am in Room 6A. Flash Forward is the new series created by David Goyer and Brannon Braga, about a worldwide event where everyone blacks out for two minutes and seventeen seconds – and awakens with visions of their own future.

EW.com - 'Lost' star Josh Holloway on Juliet, Jack, and Jughead: An EW Must Issue Video

The master list of possible Emmy nominees was recently announced, and we at EW were thrilled to see that Josh Holloway, who has played Sawyer on Lost since its first season back in 2004, is among the mix of potential candidates for Best Supporting Actor. Season 5 was a great year for the 39-year-old star, whose wise-cracking, morally ambiguous con man character completed a series-long shift to full-fledged romantic hero as he led the castaways through time travel peril and fell in love with Jughead-banging Juliet (Elizabeth Mitchell). His grief as he watched his Dharma lady slip out of his hands and fall to her doom was one of the TV season's most heartbreaking moments. While we hope Emmy remembers Holloway when it winnows its list of Best Supporting Actor players down to a final five, we decided to move ahead and give him an honor of our own by putting Holloway's in this year's Must Issue, EW's annual summertime compendium of essential artists, performers, and assorted coolness.

In my previous trips to the Lost set in Hawaii, I have always found Holloway to be extremely cordial, charming, and curious about the mysteries of his show. He's always demonstrated a deep concern that Sawyer remain emotionally credible and compelling without being melodramatic or over the top. And he takes Sawyer's quips very seriously: When I visited at the end of Season 2, I remember watching him pace through the jungle, rehearsing his lines over and over again to himself, wanting to make sure Sawyer's new Prince-esque nickname for Ben Linus ("The artist formerly known as Henry Gale") tripped easily off his tongue. I encountered a slightly different Holloway at our Must Issue photo shoot in the Hollywood Hills late last month. He was as cool and engaging as always, but greatly enhanced by the glee and marvel (and exhaustion) of new fatherhood. (His daughter, Java, was born last April.) The guy certainly has a certain impact on ladies: At one point during the photo shoot, I spotted a member of our crew discretely pick up one of Holloway's shirts and give it a good long sniff. Seriously.

I got a chance to chat with Holloway after the pics were snapped, which we present to you in the three parts. In Part 1, embedded below, the actor talks about Sawyer's romance with Juliet and their tragic parting. In Parts 2 and 3, Holloway talks about his bloody confrontation with Matthew Fox's Jack Shephard in the season finale and also discusses some theories with yours truly about where the castaways will finds themselves at the start of Lost's sixth and final season.

Tonight's milestone 100th episode is entitled "The Variable": The time of reckoning has begun when Daniel Faraday comes clean regarding what he knows about the island. The episode is written by Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz ("The Lie," "This Place is Death," "He's Our You"), and directed by Paul Edwards ("This Place is Death").

Lost airs tonight at 9pm ET/PT, 8pm Central.

Digital Spy - Producers reflect on 'Lost'

Lost's executive producer Carlton Cuse has said that writing the show has been "extremely liberating".

Discussing some fans and the disbelief in the series, Cuse said: "The fact that no one believed Lost was going to be successful in the beginning was enormously liberating.

"So we set out to make 12 episodes of what we thought was the coolest TV show we could come up with and in so doing we violated a lot of the traditional rules of television narrative."

Speaking to Variety, co-creator J.J. Abrams added that he is amazed the pilot ever got made into a full first series.

"We were just desperate to get the pilot made," he admitted. "Looking forward meant the next day of shooting, not 100 episodes down the line."

The cult show has come under criticism, with fans suggesting the writers are unsure where the show is headed. Lost's other executive producer Damon Lindelof reveals: "Over the first three seasons, the audience was literally asking us, 'Do you know what you're doing? Is there a plan?'"

Cuse added: "We needed to express to the audience where the bookmark was in the novel. By announcing the end date, we signaled yes, we have a game plan, so you can rest assured that your investment in the show is going to pay off."

Lost is due to wrap up in May 2010 at the end of season six.

It was four and a half years ago that Oceanic Flight 815 went off course over the South Pacific and came crashing down on a seemingly deserted beach.

Forty-eight people (and a dog) stumbled from the smoking wreckage to discover an otherworldly tropical isle inhabited by polar bears, smoke monsters and a mysterious band of human natives known as the "Others." The ever-evolving mystery made ABC's "Lost" the water cooler show of the 2004-05 television season, helped revive the flagging fortunes of its parent network, and turned its cast -- all of whom were virtual unknowns, save for Matthew Fox (previously star of Fox's "Party of Five") and Dominic Monaghan (Merry in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy) -- into internationally recognizable figures.

One-hundred episodes in, the survivors still haven't figured out exactly where they are and why, but executive producer Carlton Cuse has a theory as to how they got there, creatively speaking.

"The fact that no one believed 'Lost' was going to be successful in the beginning was enormously liberating," Cuse says. "So we set out to make 12 episodes of what we thought was the coolest TV show we could come up with and in so doing we violated a lot of the traditional rules of television narrative. We had characters who were murderers and had done very bad things. We had incredibly complex serialized storytelling. We had lots of intentional ambiguity, leaving the audience lots of room for interpretation and those things that sort of violated the rules of television were the very things that the audience ended up responding to."

But nothing lasts forever. In May 2007, it was announced that "Lost" would wrap in May 2010 at the end of Season 6. The reason was not the ratings, which have declined over the years as show has shifted time slots five times and taken long midseason hiatuses like the three-week break between Episodes 6 and 7 in Season 3....

IGN - Lost Preview: "The Variable"

Lost returns this week with an all-new episode, the special 100th installment which is sure to have viewers at full attention. Lost executive producer Carlton Cuse has gone on record as saying that "The Variable" is one of the finest hours of the entire season and we have no reason to doubt him.

One of the biggest surprises in the last real episode, "Some Like It Hoth" was the revelation that Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies) has returned to the island, but we never actually saw him leave to begin with. Faraday wasn't quite himself after losing Charlotte Lewis (Rebecca Mader), only to see her shortly thereafter as a child, living on the island.

With this being a rare Faraday-centric episode, it's safe to assume this will be another great episode. You just have to look at "The Constant," an episode which has certain ties to this Wednesday's episode, as proof of what a Faraday-centric episode can be....

"Lost" was never intended for the faint of heart.

Just ask those responsible for the ambitious ABC drama's existence. Remembering how, in early 2004, the creative team had a mere 10 weeks to write, cast and shoot the entire pilot, co-creator J.J. Abrams is still amazed the show about plane crash survivors on a South Pacific island ever took flight.

"We were just desperate to get the pilot made," recalls the exec producer, who also directed the influential first episode. "Looking forward meant the next day of shooting, not 100 episodes down the line."

Flash forward five years as "Lost" reaches that milestone. An instant hit for ABC and an Emmy and Golden Globe winner, "Lost" now ranks among the most respected -- not to mention dissected -- dramas in TV history, thanks to its artful balance of complex mythology and nuanced character development. Then, of course, there are those patented whiplash-inducing plot twists.

"There's generally one point within each meeting where I'm like, 'You want to do what?'" says Stephen McPherson, president of ABC Entertainment Group, of his state-of-the-union sit-downs with co-creator/exec producer Damon Lindelof and exec producer Carlton Cuse,, who've steered the show together since the early days of season one. "The fact that they're not afraid to take those risks is what makes 'Lost' so innovative and exciting."

"Lost's" boldest development didn't play out on camera, however; it unfolded behind the scenes three years ago when the network announced that the series would wrap after six seasons in spring 2010. The move was almost unheard of in network television. Typically, networks milk a hit series until the ratings run dry, and at the time producers were in discussions with McPherson and then-ABC Studios president Mark Pedowitz, and "Lost" was perched comfortably in Nielsen's top 15 and dominated its timeslot in key demos....

Variety - Full orchestra puts 'Lost' aud on edge

Composer Michael Giacchino has plenty going on in his life. During "Lost's" fifth season, he has been busy scoring such forthcoming features as Par's "Star Trek," Disney/Pixar's "Up" and U's "Land of the Lost." Yet he still makes time to score every episode of ABC's "Lost."

"I love the show," says Giacchino, who won a 2005 Emmy for his work on the series. "Years from now, I know I'll point back to it and say, 'That was something special and I'm glad I got to do it.' "

Unlike most series TV, every episode of "Lost" is scored with a 34-piece orchestra.

"It gives a soul to the music," says the composer. "When you write for an orchestra, the sky's the limit. It has this raw, organic quality or an amazingly emotional, internal quality. If I were to do this show with a synthesizer or samples, it would have a hollow, dead feel."

From the pilot on, Giacchino has used the same sonic palette: strings, trombones, piano, harp and percussion (including airplane parts), because, he explains: "It sounded nothing like jungle music. Everything was already there for you to see in the most beautiful detail, and I wasn't going to echo that. The goal was to make the audience uncomfortable, trying to create textures and sounds that you wouldn't normally hear."

Giacchino's composing process is also offbeat: He writes every score strictly chronologically, as he views the unfinished show....

Variety - Devotees delay 'Lost' passion

"Lost" looks like an advertiser's dream, drawing in the sought-after young viewers who carry their obsession to the Internet, videogames and DVD sales.

But that often fickle audience has grown up with the ability and predilection to time shift their viewing, undermining the traditional way networks earn money for programs.

" 'Lost' has a very young audience that consumes things how and when they want it," says Jeff Jensen, Entertainment Weekly senior writer specializing in "Lost." "It's a show where people want to take the time to savor it. But when the audience says, 'I love you but I can afford to wait to watch you,' you're kind of screwed."

"Lost" is one of the most digitally recorded scripted TV series on the air, with about a third of the viewing time-delayed. That presents an economic puzzle for ABC working in an advertising environment that buys commercial time according to a live-plus-three-day calculation.

Advertisers are leery of buying time on shows that are heavily DVR'd, says Deana Myers, SNL Kagan senior analyst....

Associated Press - ABC's 'Lost' marks 100th episode this week

"Lost" marks its 100th episode Wednesday, an achievement its producers consider as surreal as the TV drama's mind-bending plots. Executive producer Damon Lindelof, one of the series' creators, recalled meeting with ABC executives four years ago to pitch the idea of plane crash survivors stranded on an island of mystery and danger.

They were asked where the "Lost" saga would stand at, say, episode No. 74.

"I said, `We're probably not going to get past episode 13. Let's all be honest about that upfront," Lindelof recalled, adding, "If I traveled back in time to tell myself after that meeting that we were going to make it to 100 and still have a season beyond that, I would have laughed in my face."

Fans will appreciate the notion of time-skipping, since the current season has reveled in just that. "Lost" has flung major characters across decades, leaving them - and the audience - feverishly attempting to keep events straight and the end game in sight.

"It was always part of the master plan that the time-travel elements in the show would become more overt," said executive producer Carlton Cuse. He recalled an early episode in which Sayid (Naveen Andrews) is fiddling with a radio and hears 1940s music....
